EECE 359

Problem Set 6 Issued: November 21, 2011; Due: November 28, 2011. Please put the completed assignment into the assignment box labeled EECE 359 outside MCLD 448. Late submissions cannot be accepted. Mandatory Problems (will be marked) Problem 1 A continuous-time signal xc (t) of bandwidth M = 2 10 kHz has the spectrum Xc (j ) given by Xc (j ) 1

M 0

For a certain application, xc(t) has to be ltered with a lter Hc (j ) specied by Hc (j ) 1 M / 2 M /2 1

For implementation of this ltering operation, the structure shown below is considered.

xc (t)

Impulse train sampling

Conversion of xp (t) impulse train xd [n] Filtering with yd [n] to discrete-time Hd (ej ) sequence

Conversion of Interpolation yc (t) discrete-time yp (t) with sequence to H1 (j ) impulse train

First, xc (t) is impulsetrain sampled with a sampling frequency of s . The sampled signal is xp(t). a) What is the minimum sampling frequency s if aliasing is to be avoided?

The sampling frequency is now s = 2 30 kHz.

b) Sketch the Fourier transform Xp (j ) of the sampled signal xp(t) in the interval | | < 2 45 kHz. Next, xp(t) is converted into a discrete-time signal xd [n], i.e., xd[n] = x(nT ) , T = 2/s = 1/(30 103) sec (sampling interval) .

For the spectrum Xd (ej ) of xd [n] we have the relation Xd (ej ) = Xp (j /T ) . c) Sketch the Fourier transform Xd (ej ) of the discrete-time signal xd [n] in the interval || < 3 . d) Sketch the frequency response Hd (ej ) of that discrete-time system which results in the desired frequency response Hc (j ) of the overall continuoustime system. Consider again the interval || < 3 . e) Sketch the Fourier transform Yd (ej ) of yd [n] in the interval || < 3 . f) Sketch the Fourier transform Yp (j ) of yp (t) in the interval | | < 2 45 kHz. g) Determine the minimum and the maximum cuto frequency 1 of the ideal lowpass lter H1(j ) if yc (t) is to be identical with the output of Hc (j ).
