About the author

Dr John G. Wensveen earned a Ph.D. in International Air Transport from the University of Wales and a BA in Geography and Transportation Land Use Planning from the University of Victoria, Canada. He is currently President & CEO of Airline Visions, an aviation consultancy based in Washington DC, specialized in the development of airline business plans. Dr Wensveen was one of the founding executive team members and Vice President of International Development at MAXjet Airways. Dr Wensveen has held the academic positions of Dean of the School of Aviation at Dowling College in New York and professor of airline management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach. He is connected with a number of industry associations and is a faculty member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as well as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland University College. Dr Wensveen is also one of the editors of Aeronautica Journal at Grifth Universitys Aerospace Strategic Study Centre in Brisbane, Australia. He is an active contributor to the international media on aviation-related issues. About the authors

Bijan Vasigh is Professor of Economics and Finance in the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York, and has published many articles concerning the aviation industry. The articles were published in numerous academic journals, including the Journal of Economics and Finance, Journal of Transportation Management, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Scientic and Technical Aerospace Reports, Transportation Quarterly, Airport Business, Journal of Business and Economics, and Journal of Travel Research. He has been quoted in major newspapers and magazines around the world. In 2006, his paper, A Total Factor Productivity Based for Tactical Cluster Assessment: Empirical Investigation in the Airline Industry, was awarded the Dr. Frank E. Sorenson Award for outstanding achievement of excellence in aviation research scholarship. Bijan is the author of Aircraft Finance: Strategies for Managing Capital Costs in a Turbulent Industry, and The Foundations of Airline Finance: Methodology and Practice. Dr. Fleming received his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego, August 1978 with specialties in Econometrics and Public Finance. He received his M.A., in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles, in June 1969. A former military pilot with over 3,000 hours in 11 different aircraft, he holds an FAA Commercial Pilot Airplane Single and Multi-engine Instrument Rating. Dr. Fleming was the leader of a group of 15 research analysts and computer programmers who actively participated in applied Aviation research projects with Boeing, NASA, and the FAA and he has been the principal author or co-author of over 20 reports and articles including two textbooks during the past 15 years; these publications have dealt with all aspects of the economics of the aviation industry. Thomas Tacker, Ph.D. is Professor of Economics and the Chair of the Department of Economics, Finance and Information Systems at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He received his doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his B.S. in Business Administration from Embry-Riddle. He won the National Federation of Independent Businesses Award For Most Outstanding Paper On Entrepreneurship and Public Policy and the prestigious Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Funded research includes NASA grants for study on: The Future Supply of SATS Pilots, The Economic Benets of SATS in U.S. Labor Markets, and The Future Supply of SATS Aircraft. About the editors

Peter Forsyth has been Professor of Economics at Monash University since 1997. His research has been on applied microeconomics, with particular reference to the economics of air transport, tourism economics and of regulation. He has recently published a jointly edited book on Airport Competition the European Experience, Ashgate. Recent work has involved using computable general equilibrium models to assess the economic impacts of tourism, including events, and in analysing tourism and aviation policy issues. David Gillen is YVR Professor of Transportation Policy in the Sauder School of Business and Director Centre for Transportation Studies, University of British Columbia. In addition he is Research Economist at the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. David has published more than 100 books, technical reports, journal papers, conference presentations and other articles in various areas of transportation economics, including airline competition and industry structure, airport economics and noise externalities, and transportation policy in Canada and the United States. Kai Hschelrath is Senior Researcher in the Department of Industrial Economics and International Management at ZEW Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany. In addition he is Assistant Professor for Industrial Organization and Competitive Strategy at WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar, Germany. His research focuses on various areas of competition policy and competitive strategy including market denition, collusive practices, mergers and market entry. Hans-Martin Niemeier is Director of the Institute for Transport and Development of the Bremen University of Applied Sciences and Chairman of the German Aviation Research Society. He is known for his work on airport privatization, regulation and performance of European airports. A former airport regulator, he has previously conducted studies on the market power of Amsterdam airport, the role of benchmarking in incentive regulation of European airports and the performance of Norwegian airports. Hartmut Wolf is Professor of Trade, Logistics and Maritime Economics at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. In addition, he is associated Economist at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. His research focuses on international transport markets and institutional aspects of the provision of infrastructure services and institutional economics.

Sven Gross, PhD studied Tourism Geography and Economics at the University of Trier and Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund. He received his Masters Degree in 1998 and was a management and community consultant for several years, personal assistant to the mayor of Bad Drkheim and research associate at the chair of tourism economics and management at the Dresden University of Technology. In 2004 he completed his PhD in the Department of Trafc and Transport Sciences Friedrich List at Dresden University of Technology. Since 2005 Sven has been Professor of TransportCarrier Management at the Hochschule Harz (University of Applied Sciences), Wernigerode, Germany. As of August 2008 he has been head of the tourism department in the competence centre of information and communication technologies, tourism and services at the Hochschule Harz (together with Prof. Dr. Axel Dreyer), and since 2007 a member of the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute (NZTRI) based in Auckland. In 2010 Sven was a visiting professor (scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD) at the Auckland University of Technology. His main research areas include tourism and transport (eg airline management, cruise ship management, car rental management, transport concepts for destinations), business travel management (eg Online Booking Engines, web 2.0), event marketing and management as well as tourist market research. He has authored more than 50 publications on these subjects, including seven books. Michael Lck, PhD is Associate Professor and Head of Department (Tourism & Events) in the School of Hospitality and Tourism, and Associate Director for the coastal and marine tourism research program area at the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute, both at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand. He received his doctorate from the University of Otago in Dunedin. Michael has more than ten years work experience in the tourism industry, having worked for a large package tour operator, travel agencies, a campervan rental company, and as tour guide in Belize. He taught at universities in Germany, New Zealand, Scotland, and Canada. Michaels research interests lie in the areas of marine tourism, ecotourism, sustainable tourism, the impacts of tourism, aviation, and gay tourism. He has published in a number of international journals, is founding editor-inchief of the academic journal Tourism in Marine Environments, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Ecotourism. Michael edited or co-edited two volumes on ecotourism, two on marine tourism, two on polar tourism and the Encyclopedia of Tourism and Recreation in Marine Environments (CABI).

About the author

Dr Peter Morrell is a consultant and visiting professor at Craneld University. He graduated in economics from Cambridge University and subsequently gained a Masters in air transportation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on NASA sponsored research into airline forecasting and protability. He has a doctorate from Craneld University. Peter is a former head of the Department of Air Transport at the College of Aeronautics at Craneld University, where he held a chair in air transport economics and nance, and he is the European Editor for the Journal of Air Transport Management as well as on the editorial board of Tourism Economics. He has lectured on numerous industry courses, and directs the Airline Finance course at Craneld. Peter lectured on airline industry regulation for the Royal Aeronautical Societys annual Oxford Air Transport Course, and has taught airline management at the French LEcole National de lAviation Civil (ENAC), Donau-Universitt in Austria, Chang Jung University in Taiwan, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Brazilian Instituto de Aviaao Civil. He has also lectured on in-house management courses for airlines which included British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, South African Airways, Finnair, LOT Polish Airlines, Emirates Airlines and Cyprus Airways, and courses for other clients such as British Telecom. About the editors

John W. Overton, Jr. earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Virginia. After initial years in residency training, followed by six years of full-time inner-city emergency medicine that fostered interest in trauma care, Dr. Overton returned to residency training, completing general and cardiothoracic surgical residencies. His interests in trauma consulting and improving trauma care have continued throughout his career. He was one of the earliest adopters of a regional trauma database in the 1980s and contributed to the development of the National Cardiac Surgical Database in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dr. Overtons surgical career has been inuenced by his life-long interest in aviation and safety, employing aviation safety principles he learned as a pilot to improve surgical care. He has been a general aviation pilot for over three decades. Following his retirement from clinical surgery, Dr. Overton remains an active pilot and teaches medical and surgical colleagues principles of safety and risk management. He is a former member of the board of directors for the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems, and in 2011 he was appointed to serve as the interim medical ofcer for the National Transportation Safety Board. He is a proponent of a just culture and teaches the subjects of Just Culture and Threat and Error Management to medical, surgical and transport teams. Eileen Frazer, R.N., Certied Medical Transport Executive; former chief ight nurse, chairperson for the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) Safety Committee that worked jointly in 1988 with the Helicopter Association International, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a feasibility study that led to the development of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) in 1990; executive director of CAMTS since its inception. Throughout her career, Ms Frazer has consulted with major hospitals and university centers regarding the training of air medical personnel in air medical safety and preparation of patients for air transport. Active in the State of Pennsylvania, she assisted in writing the rules and regulations for Air Ambulance (EMS Act 45) for the state of Pennsylvania and served on the State of PA Nursing Advisory Board from 1985-1990. Currently, as executive director of CAMTS, Ms Frazer continues to author policies and standards that guide the CAMTS accreditation process and has a regular feature in the Air Medical Journal and continues to publish and speak on medical transport quality, safety, and just culture.
