Introduction to Air Transport Economics

From Theory to Applications Second Edition Edited by Bijan Vasigh, Ken Fleming and Thomas Tacker, all at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA
This is the book for anyone who wants to know what drives the behavior in air transport markets, of customers, suppliers, the airlines themselves, and even the governments that regulate the industry. Bijan Vasigh, Ken Fleming, and Thomas Tacker showed, in the rst edition of this book, that looking at the air transport industry with an economists perspective gives the reader important insights into many of the issues that make aviation so fascinating. We are given the opportunity to see through the eyes of three distinguished economists, from one of the leading universities specializing in aviation. That opportunity will be well worth taking in this second edition. Brian Pearce, International Air Transport Association, Switzerland From the Foreword to the second edition

In one comprehensive textbook it applies economic theory to all aspects of the aviation industry, bringing together the numerous and informative articles and institutional developments that have characterized the eld of airline economics in the last two decades as well as adding a number of areas original to an aviation text. Its integrative approach offers a fresh point of view that will nd favour with many students of aviation. The book offers a self-contained theory and applications-oriented text for any individual intent on entering the aviation industry as a practising professional in the management area. It will be of greatest relevance to undergraduate and graduate students interested in obtaining a more complete understanding of the economics of the aviation industry. It will also appeal to many professionals who seek an accessible and practical explanation of the underlying economic forces that shape the industry. The second edition has been extensively updated throughout. It features new coverage of macroeconomics for managers, expanded analysis of modern revenue management and pricing decisions, and also reects the many signicant developments that have occurred since the originals publication. Instructors will nd this modernized edition easier to use in class, and suitable to a wider variety of undergraduate or graduate course structures, while industry practitioners and all readers will nd it more intuitively organized and more user friendly. Liberalization in Aviation
Competition, Cooperation and Public Policy Edited by Peter Forsyth, David Gillen, Kai Hschelrath, Hans-Martin Niemeier and Hartmut Wolf
The airline industry has both facilitated and beneted from the globalization resulting from trade liberalization in the past 60 years. Yet aviation itself remains far from being completely liberalized. Despite the economic benets resulting from the liberalization that has taken place there are many political barriers hindering further progress. The importance of this book is the rigorous insight it gives into a wide range of aviation liberalization issues by gathering together the work of the key scholars in this eld. This is a book of policy relevance that should be read by regulators as well as academics. Brian Pearce, Chief Economist, International Air Transport Association, Geneva and Visiting Professor Craneld University Department of Air Transport, UK The last few decades have witnessed substantial liberalization trends in various industries and countries. Starting with the deregulation of the U.S. airline industry in 1978, regulatory restructuring took place in further network industries such as telecommunications, electricity or railways in various countries around the world. Although most of the liberalization movements were initially triggered by the worrying performances of the respective regulatory frameworks, increases in competition and corresponding improvements in allocative and productive efciency were typically associated with the respective liberalization efforts. From an academic perspective, the transition from regulated industries to liberalized industries has attracted a substantial amount of research reected in many books and research articles which can be distilled to three main questions: (1) What are the forces that have given rise to regulatory reform? (2) What is the structure of the regulatory change which has occurred to date and is likely to occur in the immediate future? (3) What have been the effects on industry efciency, prices and prots of the reforms which have occurred to date? Liberalization in Aviation brings together renowned academics and practitioners from around the world to address all three questions and draw policy conclusions. The book is divided into ve sections, in turn dealing with aspects of competition in various liberalized markets, the emergence and growth of low-cost carriers, horizontal mergers and alliances, infrastructures, and concluding with economic assessments of liberalization steps so far and proposed steps in the future. Includes 115 gures and 76 tables June 2013 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 230 pages 978-1-4094-5090-0 978-1-4094-5091-7 978-1-4724-0128-1 c. 70.00

The Low Cost Carrier Worldwide

Edited by Sven Gross, Hochschule Harz, University of Applied Sciences, Germany and Michael Lck, AUT University, New Zealand
Low cost carriers have often introduced new operational parameters to an industry already famous for thin margins, heavy regulation and signicant cost structures. Gross and Luck have marvellously pulled together authors from around the world for a global treatment of business models that have stood the test of time, yet continue to innovate and surprise. David Duval, Winnipeg University, Canada Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) have become an integral part of todays air transport and tourism industries. Originated in the United States, the low-cost concept has subsequently been adopted by airlines on all continents. LCCs in Europe and North America, and to some extent in Asia, have already been well covered by academic literature. However, scientic publications on the topic of LCCs in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand are scarce. This volume provides the rst comprehensive overview of developments, the legal framework and the current situation of the low-cost carrier phenomenon across the globe. It contains a dozen chapters dedicated to each region in turn, all written by highly experienced and renowned experts from around the world. The Low Cost Carrier Worldwide is written primarily for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as researchers and practitioners within the elds of aviation, transport and tourism.

Aviation Law, Policy and Regulation

NEW

International Aviation Law

A Practical Guide Ronald I.C. Bartsch, AvLaw International Aviation Consultants, Australia
The modern airline pilot has three primary legal obligations in their working day: a statutory obligation to their regulator as a licence holder; a contractual obligation to their employer; and an obligation through the common law duty of care to their passengers and the general public. It provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of aviation law from criminal law to contract law to the legal duties and responsibility of aircrew and other aviation personnel including airport operators, air trafc controllers and aircraft engineers. Each area of the law is clearly explained in accessible language and supported with practical case studies to illustrate the application of the law within an operational aviation context. It also provides advice on how to avoid or minimize legal liability for aviation practitioners and enthusiasts.

Air Transport and the Environment

Ben Daley, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), UK
Sustainable development is a formidable challenge for aviation. Air Transport and the Environment presents the scope of this challenge within a scienticallycomprehensive, critical and thought-provoking analysis. By drawing together detail on pollution, noise and climate change whilst introducing the broader policy landscape, Daley is well placed to delve into arguably more contentious issues surrounding sustainable development. His nal chapter questioning aviations economic contribution, in light of the unequal benets accrued, provides an insightful addition to this book and the wider debate. Alice Bows, Sustainable Consumption Institute, University of Manchester, UK Air Transport and the Environment provides an overview of the main issues relating to aviation environmental impacts. It explains the challenge facing policymakers in terms of sustainable development, focusing on the importance of balancing the industrys economic, social and environmental costs and benets, both for people living now and for future generations. Individual chapters review the current scientic understanding of the main aviation environmental impacts: climate change, local air pollution and aircraft noise. 2010 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 274 pages 978-0-7546-7286-9 978-0-7546-9089-4 978-1-4094-8647-3 39.95

Flying in the Face of Criminalization

The Safety Implications of Prosecuting Aviation Professionals for Accidents
Soa Michaelides-Mateou, University of Nicosia, Cyprus and Andreas Mateou, Cyprus Airways, Cyprus
This is a truly fascinating book, especially since the central dilemma of whether or not to volunteer (possibly self-incriminating) information for the greater good is not conned to the world of avaition. It might not, of itself, bring about change but it is a useful addition to a debate on how to discourage most people covering their own backs rst when anything goes wrong. RoSPA Occupational Safety & Health Journal Those involved in an aviation accident face a dilemma between not supplying information for preventing future accidents and supplying such information which may result in their criminal prosecution. Aviation safety is largely built upon the trust placed by aviation professionals in the process of accident investigation. This book examines the growing trend to criminalize these same people following an accident investigation and considers the implications this has for aviation safety. 2010 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 234 pages 978-1-4094-0767-6 978-1-4094-0768-3 978-1-4094-8649-7 55.00

Airport Competition
The European Experience

10

Edited by Peter Forsyth, Monash University, Australia, David Gillen, University of British Columbia, Canada, Jrgen Mller, Berlin School of Economics, Germany and Hans-Martin Niemeier, University of Applied Sciences, Germany
Forsyth et al have produced a timely and important contribution to the evidence base and thinking on this critical issue. Regulators and governments should take note as they consider the effectiveness of competition in the airports sector. It can and does exist. The key question is can it be strong enough to constrain the abuse of market power? The answer, based on this excellent and balanced set of papers, is quite rightly presented as not being black and white but requiring hard analysis on a case by case basis. The authors show that there are many important questions still to be answered before we can, in practice, determine where consumers can rely on competition to discipline the market for airport services. Brian Pearce, Chief Economist, IATA The break-up of BAA and the blocked takeover of Bratislava airport by the competing Vienna airport brought the issue of airport competition to the top of the agenda for air transport policy in Europe. Airport Competition reviews the debate and asks whether airport competition is strong enough to limit market power. It provides evidence on how travellers chose an airport, and on how airports compete in different regions and markets. It also discusses the main policy implications of mergers and subsidies. includes 56 gures and 21 tables 2010 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 462 pages 978-0-7546-7746-8 978-0-7546-9484-7 978-1-4094-8634-3 75.00

Why Cant We Make Money in Aviation?

Adam M. Pilarski, AVITAS, USA
Seemingly since the beginning of aviation history there has been discussion and speculation on the remarkable inability of the industry to generate prots. The question as to how this is the case and how the industry managed to survive, let alone actually grow and prosper so far, is the subject of this book. Detailing the historical performance of the industry and critically exploring the various theories proposed to explain its lack of protability, the book also looks to the future, with important recommendations regarding the better management of airlines. 2007 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 260 pages 978-0-7546-4911-3 978-0-7546-8472-5 978-1-4094-8559-9 35.00

The Multitasking Myth

Handling Complexity in Real-World Operations
Loukia D. Loukopoulos, Key Dismukes and Immanuel Barshi, all at NASA Ames Research Center, USA
Ashgate Studies in Human Factors for Flight Operations Despite growing concern with the effects of concurrent task demands on human performance, and research demonstrating that these demands are associated with vulnerability to error, so far there has been only limited research into the nature and range of concurrent task demands in real-world settings. This book presents a set of NASA studies that characterize the nature of concurrent task demands confronting airline ight crews in routine operations, as opposed to emergency situations. The authors analyze these demands in light of what is known about cognitive processes, particularly those of attention and memory, with the focus upon inadvertent omissions of intended actions by skilled pilots. 2009 Paperback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 202 pages 978-0-7546-7997-4 978-0-7546-9412-0 978-1-4094-8591-9 25.00

Manoj S. Patankar, Jeffrey P . Brown, Edward J. Sabin and Thomas G. Bigda-Peyton
This book brings it all together; it is fresh, inspiring and to-the-point. The commonality between air trafc management and healthcare makes sense and together add up to the critical mass needed to impact positively on the development of Safety Culture in society. From the book it is easy to extract pragmatic guidelines for the people working hands on with Safety Culture. Billy Josefsson, Sr Advisor Air Trafc Management & Human Performance Manager, LFV, Sweden In Safety Culture: Building and Sustaining a Cultural Change in Aviation and Healthcare, the four authors draw upon their extensive teaching, research and eld experience from multiple industries to describe the dynamic nature of a culture-change process, particularly in safety-critical domains. They use a stories to numbers approach that starts with felt experiences and stories of certain change programs that they have documented, then proceed to describe the use of key measurement tools that can be used to analyze the state of a change program. The book concludes with a description of empirical models that illustrate the dynamic nature of change programmes. Edited by Corinne Bieder, Airbus, France and Mathilde Bourrier, University of Geneva, Switzerland
Procedures are by some seen as a panacea for all safety problems, while others realise that they are a double-edged solution that hinders as much as it helps. The book provides a refreshing analysis of the basic practical and theoretical issues, and is a valuable reference for people who recognise the difference between working to rule and working safely. Erik Hollnagel, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark Once safety is involved, there seems to be an irresistible push towards more norms, procedures and processes, whatever the context. This book is not a plea against proceduralization, but it does take the view that it is time to reassess how far it can still go and to what benet. There is a growing suspicion that the path taken might in fact lead to a dead end, unless the concept of procedure and the conditions under which procedures develop are revisited.

The Multitasking Myth

Handling Complexity in Real-World Operations
Loukia D. Loukopoulos, R. Key Dismukes and Immanuel Barshi, all at NASA Ames Research Center, USA
Despite growing concern with the effects of concurrent task demands on human performance, and research demonstrating that these demands are associated with vulnerability to error, so far there has been only limited research into the nature and range of concurrent task demands in real-world settings. 2009 Paperback Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 202 pages 978-0-7546-7997-4 978-0-7546-7382-8 978-0-7546-9412-0 978-1-4094-8591-9 25.00 65.00

Safety and Quality in Medical Transport Systems

Creating an Effective Culture Edited by John W. Overton, Jr. and Eileen Frazer, Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems, USA
The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) has been accrediting air and ground transport services since 1991. One of the most signicant needs the Commission has recognized is to assist transport services in creating a culture that supports safety and quality for both crews and patients. Most of the helicopter EMS (emergency medical service) accidents and many ground ambulance accidents can be attributed to human factors and systems designs that lead to poor decision-making. Management commitment is vital to create and maintain a culture that supports risk assessment, accountability, professionalism and organizational dynamics. This reference book has been created by CAMTS to address this need directly and comprehensively. It offers a groundbreaking collection of expert insights and practical solutions that can be used by EMS, Fire and Rescue, public and private services, and professional emergency and transport professionals worldwide. Quoting from the foreword written by the late Robert L. Helmreich, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The University of Texas Human Factors Research Project, This is an important book which should be required reading for everyone involved in patient transport, from managers and dispatchers to those at the sharp end The experienced and able authors and editors of this work use culture as the overarching concept needed to maximize safety while delivering patients expeditiously.

About the editors

John W. Overton, Jr. earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Virginia. After initial years in residency training, followed by six years of full-time inner-city emergency medicine that fostered interest in trauma care, Dr. Overton returned to residency training, completing general and cardiothoracic surgical residencies. His interests in trauma consulting and improving trauma care have continued throughout his career. He was one of the earliest adopters of a regional trauma database in the 1980s and contributed to the development of the National Cardiac Surgical Database in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dr. Overtons surgical career has been inuenced by his life-long interest in aviation and safety, employing aviation safety principles he learned as a pilot to improve surgical care. He has been a general aviation pilot for over three decades. Following his retirement from clinical surgery, Dr. Overton remains an active pilot and teaches medical and surgical colleagues principles of safety and risk management. Understanding Decisionmaking Processes in Airline Operations Control

Peter J. Bruce, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
An excellent study which underlines the complexity of airline operations and, most importantly, the potential effectiveness of airline operational control centres (OCC) which have to respond to singular or multiple disruptions. These can vary enormously and challenge some of the best prepared and trained OCC teams. Understanding airline policies, developing plans and checklists, training, integrating information systems for situational awareness and effective two-way communications are essential for a successful outcome. Chris Peet, VP Network Control & Logistics (retired) Emirates Airline Understanding Decision-Making Processes in Airline Operations Control focuses on an area largely overlooked: an airlines Operations Control Centre (OCC). This serves as the nerve centre of the airline and is responsible for decision-making with respect to operational control of an airlines daily schedules. British Aviation Posters
Art, Design and Flight
Scott Anthony and Oliver Green
...lovely and interesting book...the story of an airline and, by extension, the country whose ag it ew...takes you to depths you could have hardly suspected from its title alone and offers many hours of fruitful discovery. Sabu Advani, speedreaders.info From Futurism and Modernism to Art Deco and Surrealism, aviation was from its earliest days inextricably linked with revolutionary new ways of seeing the world. Focusing on the golden age of British civil aviation, British Aviation Posters shows how art and design was applied with great creativity and style to develop and promote aviation in the UK and beyond. British Naval Aviation

The First 100 Years
Edited by Tim Benbow, Kings College London, UK
Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies Series this book must be read by everyone who has an interest in the history of the Royal Navy and those who take an intelligent interest in British defence issues during the twenty-rst century, the arguments described are unlikely to end for many years to come. I recommend this book highly. The Mariners Mirror Taking a broadly chronological approach, this collection explores key events and issues of British naval aviation, from the Admiraltys rst order for an airship in 1909 through to debates concerning replacement aircraft carriers in the early twenty-rst century. In so doing, the volume offers fascinating insights into one of the most important aspects of defence policy and Britains military history, which is sure to stimulate further scholarly debate. 2011 Hardback ebook PDF ebook ePUB 248 pages 978-1-4094-0612-9 978-1-4094-3037-7 978-1-4094-8236-9 60.00

Land Based Air Power or Aircraft Carriers?

A Case Study of the British Debate about Maritime Air Power in the 1960s
Gjert Lage Dyndal, Royal Norwegian Airforce Academy, Norway
Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies Series Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this new work by Gjert Dyndal is a comprehensive historical investigation of the British maritime air power debate that took place in the 1960s. Dyndal has taken advantage of recently declassied archival material to bring to light the complexity and dynamics of this most fascinating period in British strategic thinking. Chief of [the Australian] Air Forces Reading List Drawing upon a wealth of previously classied documents, the book reveals how the Admiralty and Air Ministry became interlocked in a bitter political struggle over which of their military strategies could best meet Britains future foreign policy challenges. Providing an important and balanced overview of the complex issues involved, it offers not only a better understanding of Cold War political and military history, but highlights debates that are still highly relevant in the twenty-rst century. Over 3000 Ashgate books are now available as ebooks

We aim to make as many books as possible available in both print and e-format. A complete listing of our available ebooks can be found on our website. Visit www.ashgate.com/ebooks and click on the link. To nd out whether a particular book is available as an ebook, search for the book on our website, and the books information page will indicate whether the book is available as an ebook edition. We do not currently sell ebooks directly to customers from our website, but access to Ashgate ebooks can be purchased via a wide range of ebook suppliers. The full range of suppliers we work with is shown on the website. The major ones include: For libraries: Dawsonera EBSCO Netlibrary EBL Ebrary Myilibrary Our ebooks are available in enhanced pdf format, and include a fully bookmarked table of contents, internal hyperlinks to and from the table of contents, a hyperlinked index and hyperlinked endnotes. Ashgates ebooks are predominantly bought by institutional purchasers, and read on screen either in an institutional library or remotely. One advantage to libraries of buying ebooks is the exibility of access. Depending on the supplier or the access model, ebooks can be purchased on a short term loan basis, or may be licensed to multiple users, making it more practical to assign as textbooks titles which previously were only available as hardbacks. The pdf format retains the original page numbering and page layout, which aids citation. As the page layout is xed, these ebooks are best viewed on larger screens, such as desktops and laptops. We are making many of our existing ebooks additionally available in the ePUB format. ePUB is a reowable text format, which is designed for ebook readers (including Kobo, Nook and the Sony e-reader), tablets and smartphones. Around 1000 Ashgate books are currently available in Amazons Kindle format. Like ePUB, Kindle books feature reowable text, which is good for reading on the smaller Kindle screen.
