Rutherford, H Present Level Lesson Plan 1 Lesson Preparation Teacher Candidate: Heather Rutherford Title of Lesson: Personal Budget

t Grade Level: High School Subject Area: Mathematics 1. Lesson Topic (What is the big idea?): Student will learn how to create a personal budget. 2. What standard(s) will it address? Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level Expectations: High School Standard: 2. Patterns, Functions, and Algebraic Structures 2. Quantitative relationships in the real words can be modeled and solved using functions. d. Model personal financial situations. 3. Main Objective of Instruction (What do you want the student(s) to learn?): When given a fictitious monthly paycheck, the student will create a personal budget that includes allowances for housing, food, and entertainment as measured by a teacher-made personal budget worksheet. 4. Supporting Objectives: Student will practice basic mathematical skills. 5. Specific Strategies (conspicuous) to be taught/modeled: Modeling, Direct Instruction. 6. Planning for individual differences (mediated scaffolding): What are the accommodations/modifications you need to prepare? The student will need to research the average costs of housing, food, and entertainment. The student will need help with this research. 7. What background knowledge do the students have? How will you assess students learning pre, during and post? The student understands that a source of income is required to live independently. I will assess the student prior to the lesson by asking her to complete a personal budget worksheet. During the lesson I will monitor how the student is

Rutherford, H Present Level Lesson Plan 2 researching the costs associated with living independently. After the lesson I will give the student a personal budget worksheet to complete with all the information she has gathered.

8. What management/grouping issues do you need to consider? This lesson will be given one-on-one. 9. Materials and Resources: Computer with internet access, grocery store receipts, personal budget worksheets, personal notebook 10. How/where will students be able to integrate (generalize) this learning? The student will be able to use this information after high school to live independently. 11. How will you evaluate student learning from this lesson and build review into ongoing instruction (judicious review)? I will continue to use real world situations in mathematical problems to help the student reinforce independent living skills.

Rutherford, H Present Level Lesson Plan 3 Lesson Title: Personal Budget Main Objective of this lesson: When given a fictitious monthly paycheck, the student will create a personal budget that includes allowances for housing, food, and entertainment as measured by a teacher-made personal budget worksheet. (CONTENT-PROCESS) I. Opening: (SET How will you get the student(s) attention?) Relate lesson to prior learning. Communicate the objective of the lesson. I will ask the student if she has helped her parents with shopping at the grocery store. I will ask the student how she thinks people budget their money for food and a place to live.

II. Procedure: (Is this an informal presentation, direct instruction, or structured discovery?) This will be a one-on-one lesson using direct instruction. o Strategies (I Do/ how will you guide students to construct meaning for themselves): I Do: I will show the student how to find information on housing costs using the internet. I will give the student an amount of money that will serve as her income for the month. o Differentiation: This lesson is one-on-one and is tailored for the students needs. o (PRODUCT) The student will complete a personal budget worksheet. o Guided Practice (We Do/students present): We Do: The student and I will look at grocery receipts to determine what an average monthly grocery bill would be for one person. The student and I will discuss what kind of activities she likes and how much they will cost. The student will record the data on housing, grocery and entertainment costs in her personal notebook. The student and I will discuss how her monthly costs compare to her monthly income. We will make adjustments as needed on her monthly costs. III. Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson. Independent Practice (You Do). You Do: I will give the student a personal budget worksheet to complete. Formally END the lesson. I will collect the worksheet and praise the students for her hard work.
