Chapter 1

It is important to have skills in order to acquire a job. The current job openings at any given time is referred to as the job market. Skill set: the unique abilities and traits of an individual
Soft skills: leadership, communication, teamwork, time management, problem solving Hard skills: preparing documents, typing, operating a machine, driving, installing flooring Self-training: learning new skills from reading and 1-1 practicing on your own.

The need for particular skills change in the job market with changes in technology. It is impossible to be certain if the skills you have will be needed in the future, so continue to improve and gain new skills! Examples? Code.org

The range of income varies greatly depending on the profession you may choose. The cost of education and training also varies greatly. Your values and goals will help you determine the right path for you. Putting time and effort into researching careers will save you time and money in the future. Examples of time & money wasted?

Job description: describes what a job would be like, including tasks performed and skills needed.

Value: the worth that you place on an idea or action Goal: a desired outcome based on ones values What is important to you and why? Examples? Do you want a big family? Do you want to travel? Does the industry you are interested in require long hours and travel? Does this potential profession have opportunities in your current location? Where do you want to be? City, small town, rural?

Use the internet to determine: the fastest growing job sectors the income for certain jobs the required education & experience how the pay increases with experience the cost of education Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH): available online from the U.S. Dept. of Labor; it provides information on careers such as average earnings and the fastest growing fields.

Economy: activities related to making and distributing goods in a specific geographic area. Supply: the quantity of goods/services that producers are willing and able to provide. Demand: the willingness and ability of consumers to purchase goods/services.

Market economy: based on the laws of supply and demand.

When the economy is growing, jobs are being created and there is more income to be spent on goods/services. In a recession, spending is declining and unemployment rises. Save when times are good!! It makes the rough times easier!! Business Cycle: alternating periods of growth & decline in the economy Recovery: growth, people are spending and optimistic Peak: as good as it gets Recession: jobs are being 1-2 lost, demand declines

Financial Aid: money received from an outside source to pay for education. Scholarships gift of money or other aid -apply for as many as possible! Grants based on financial need, does not need to be repaid Loans Student loans have to be repaid! They cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. Exhaust all other avenues before gaining debt. 1-2 is not charged until 11 Subsidized Student Loan - interest

Agencies: companies that exist just to match employers with potential employees. They make their money by charging either the employee or the employer. Either way the employee will see less of a paycheck. Temp agency: provides full/part time work on a temporary basis. Headhunter: type of employment specialist who seeks out highly qualified candidates for upper level positions.

Resume describes work experience, education, skills Scannable Resume designed for easy reading by a scanner References non-family members that can vouch for your abilities and experience (previous boss, teacher) be sure to obtain permission before using a reference.
