Ours to Discover
Sight Word ResultsStudent Arrival (Fall) When I met your child, I quizzed him/ her to see what level of Dolch sight words we needed to work on. Sight words are common words found at that reading level range. Sight words should be read automatically (the brain should easily remember them). Almost the entire class tested in the Dolch Pre-Primer range. In Autumn, your child read of the Dolch Pre-Primer words correctly. Sight Word ResultsDecember/January After the Winter Break, I quizzed your child again to see how many words at this level he/she is proficient reading. Every student improved! Some students are ready for the next level (Primer) and others would benefit from reviewing the Pre-Primer words again. In January, your child read of the Pre-Primer words correctly. If he/she read all or almost all correctly, he/she will begin working on the Dolch Primer words. Sight Words Homework (Reading) Each week, students will be responsible for learning to read 3 words at their current sight word level. We will have time to practice reading and writing them at school as well. To make the groups easier for students, Ive colour-coded them. Your childs group has been highlighted; please practice reading these words at home (flash cards, finding in books, spelling, games, abcya.com).
Red Group (Dolch Pre-Primer) - and, away, big Orange Group (Dolch Primer) - all, am, are Blue Group (Dolch 4th Grade) - above, across, address, ago, air

Words Their Way (Phonics and Spelling) We completed this spelling assessment as a class on January 9. It shows students sound awareness and knowledge and their ability to apply this knowledge to writing. Your childs current level has been highlighted. This is the level where he/she began to encounter difficulties with correct spelling (although he/she may have spelled it in an understandable phonetic way). Soon, I hope to supply you with games and websites to help your child at home.
