Graphic= Visual Presentations Novel= Is a long narrative that is fictitious Thus a Graphic Novel is : A long fictitious narrative that is visually presented using images and text combined

 The Term Graphic Novel was first used in 1964 by Will Eisner in the first ever graphic Novel called A contract with god Though as per the definition of graphic novel one could also consider the tapestries from the Middle Ages as Graphic Novel Usually depicted wars Battles and Royal Scenes

 Cave Paintings: Told stories of battle, and Hunts Tapesteries: Told stories of crusades or quests

 Paintings that are found on cave walls and are usually dating back to a prehistoric age. The earliest such art in Europe dates back to the Aurignacian period, approximately 40,000 years ago, and is found in the El Castillo cave in Cantabria, Spain Usually Depicting Hunts or war with another tribe

 Usually found during the Middle Ages Depicting Crusades, Hunts, Parts of Daily Life etc.

 Difference Between Comic Books and Graphic Novels

Graphic Novel Has a definite Beginning Middle and End ( Even if it is spread over few books) Has only one central Story in the publication Usually Graphic novels are aimed at different audiences than that of Comic Books( More mature audiences)

Comic Book Has definite beginning but after that the distinction starts to blur Can have many stories in the same publication Comic Books usually are aimed at kids and at an audience with greater creativity

 Language and Literature aims to interpret different types of texts. A graphical novel has the ability to offer 2/3 different types of texts cumulatively Written Text Visual Text Audio Test( Debatable due to Speech Bubbles)

 In truly analysing a graphical novel one not only has to analyse both the written text and images present even the specific words in the speech Bubble. If a picture is worth even a 100 words( Even though the saying is a picture is worth a thousand words ) then cumulatively a graphic novel will have an excess of 15,000 words. Yes it could be more challenging to interpret and analyse than a traditional novel.
