Unit 2 Equations Day 15 Lesson: Unit Challenge 54 minutes

Objective: Students will take their Unit Challenge.

Standards: Common Core CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7a : Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers). CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7b Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-onone, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. ISTE: NETS Teachers 1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity A. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. Students 4: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: A. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. Students 5: Digital Citizenship

A. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology Preparation: Make copies of the unit 2 tests. There are three different versions found in the Holt McDougal digital textbook under Teacher Resources. Make 10 of each version. Sharpen pencils Scrap paper for students Materials: Holt McDougal digital textbook, copies of unit test, pencils, paper, iPads, stylis, NoteTaker HD app. Direct Instruction: Begin by asking students if they have any questions regarding last nights homework. Correct answers can be found in the teachers edition of the Holt McDougal digital textbook. When answering questions, use the ShowMe app on the iPad that is connected to the overhead projector before moving on. Collect homework. Guided Instruction Teacher will explain that today they are going to take the Unit Challenge. Teacher will explain that there are different versions of the Challenge so everyone will not have the same one. Students will have till the end of the period to complete their Challenge. Students may use their notes from NoteTaker HD. Students will flip Challenge paper over along with all scrap paper when they are done. Teacher will collect all completed work. If students finish early they may go to coolmath.com and play math games until the end of the period. Homework There is no homework tonight
