Sambuddhatva
Jayanti!
The trees are whispering,
The flowers insinuating,
Rendering the pond with delight.
Its ripples immerse in the moonlight,
A celebration for the day that has come.

Compiled by
Srima Warusawithana - Calgary, Canada
Infested with sores, oozing pus and blood
Tissa the monk lay upon his bed,
Writhing in agony, calling for help,
But none came by to clean his wounds
Nor give him food and water to quench his thirst;
Unbearable stench emanated from his sores,
Wallowing in his own filth, cast aside by brother monks
A discarded wretched, a miserable sight he was:
The Buddhas all-pervading compassion MahaKaruna
For those in pain, for those needing help,
Spotted the lonely, neglected Tissa
Ridden with open sores on his body.
A pot of lukewarm water, soap and other needs,
The Buddha carried to the chamber where Tissa lay;
Ananda seeing the Buddha in this act of mercy,
Followed the Lord, helping, fetching more warm water,
Bathed the monk and washed his soiled clothes,
The monks in the monastery bewildered by what they saw,
The Buddha himself caring for the sick monk,
Joined Ananda and their Master,
And together cleaned the chamber,
Made their brother monk happy and comfortable.
When all this was done, The Buddha spoke to Tissa
Words of solace and gleanings from the sublime Dhamma;
Tissa attained the final stage of sanctity an arahatPutigattaTissa
`He who cares for the sick, such a one truly ministers to me`
These the Buddha`s words were, on caring for the sick.
