Periodic Table of Elements Lesson Plan

Established Goal(s): Maryland Grade 8 Physical Science Standard I. Skills and Processes, Topic C. Communicating Scientific Information, Indicator 1. Develop explanations that explicitly link data from investigations conducted, selected readings and, when appropriate, contributions from historical discoveries. Objective: b. Interpret tables and graphs produced by others and describe in words the relationships they show. ISTE Standards for Students: Standard 1. Creativity and Innovation, c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. Standard 3. Research and Information Fluency, b. organize, analyze, and synthesize information from a variety of sources and media. Standard 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making, b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. Standard 6. Technology Operations and Concepts, b. select and use applications effectively and productively. Understanding(s): Students will understand that

The Periodic Table of Elements is designed to represent many different properties of atomic elements. Using a graphic organizer is a way to communicate large amounts of information in a simple, less wordy form.

Essential Question(s): Students will know...

As elements increase in atomic number, they increase in atomic mass. Elements are organized together in rows called periods which represent an orbit or energy level containing electrons. Elements are organized in vertical groups with elements with which they share many similar physical and chemical properties. The similar properties are caused by having the same number of valence (outer) shell electrons. Moving from left to right on the Periodic Table of Elements, the elements go from violently reactive to very stable.

Students will be able to...

Student will be able to apply knowledge of the Periodic Table of Elements to explain how ionic and covalent bonds are formed.

Performance Task(s):

Students will create a presentation highlighting information about three elements from the interactive periodic table using an appropriate software application. The students will be graded using a rubric

Other Evidence:

Students will obtain feedback from a checkpoint. Students work habits will be observed during class time. Students will write a reflective essay describing their experience.

Learning Plan: What instruction is needed to equip students to meet this standard? Step 1: Students will explore information on the Periodic Table of Elements on this website and other Step 2: Websites containing interactive Periodic Tables will be presented and demonstrated for students as models for the assignment Step 3: Students will create an electronic presentation/discussion about the subject. Step 4: Students will research three elements at different locations on the Periodic Table and include this information in their own project (using citations) Step 5: Students will check in and receive feedback/further guidance for the project. Step 6: Students will create pages/slides containing detailed information about each element (minimum of 3 elements). Step 7: Students will write a reflective paper about their project Step 8: Students will present their projects to the class and to a small group of invited guests (parents/relatives, administrators, siblings) (Format Adapted from ASCD and Grant Wiggins & Jay McTighe http://www.grantwiggins.org/documents/UbDQuikvue1005.pdf)
