Tamil Nadu gets notice on PIL against DGP

DC | 11th Jun 2013

Chennai: The Madras high court has ordered notice to the state government and DGP K. Ramanujam on the petitions seeking to take action against the DGP for abusing the advocates when they went to meet him in his office to give a complaint against the Kanyakumari police. According to the petitioners, following a fracas between advocates and a hotel management, advocates gave a complaint to the Kanyakumari police against the hotel management. But the police did not take any action. Instead, they received a false complaint from the hotel after 24 hours and registered a case against 24 advocates. Hence, the leaders of various advocates associations went to the DGP office to give a complaint. The petioners said while they were waiting outside, Ramanujam suddenly came out from his room and shouted that lawyers are bad in society, lawyers are behaving in a unruly manner in the state, I do not want to see anyone in this matter, get out from this place, call the ACP and send them out. Soon after the police force came, he shut his room, they added. They contended that being a public servant, Ramanujam was duty bound to meet persons who wish to meet him by getting proper appointment to give complaints and he had no right to say that he did not like to meet them. Refusal to receive the complaint amounts to dereliction of duty. After giving appointment, the activities of Ramanujam abusing the advocates and refusing to meet them showed the unruly behaviour of Ramanujam. Hence, he should be removed from the post, they said.
