LydieSchmit(31January19397April1988)wasaLuxembourgishpoliticianandteacher. SchmitjoinedtheLuxembourgSocialistWorkers'Partyin1970.By1974,shehadbeenchosenasPresident oftheparty:apositionthatshehelduntil1980.Sheenteredpublicofficein1976,whenshewasjoinedthe communalcouncilofSchifflange,ofwhichsheremainedamemberuntilherdeath.SheenteredtheChamber ofDeputiesin1979,butonlyservedforayearbeforeleavingtheofficetoworkfortheSocialistInternational, ofwhichshewasVicePresident,aswellasPresidentoftheSocialistInternationalWomen.Sheleftthese positionsin1984tostand,andbeelected,intheEuropeanelectionofthatyear.ShesatintheEuropean Parliamentforfouryears,butdiedofcancerattheageof49.ShewassucceededasMEPbyJosephWohlfart.
