Week 1 The Structure of the Solar System Day 2 Objective: Students will research/gather data about Planetary Motion,

Gravity, and Planets Distance from the Sun using specific approved websites. Students will record information on an Excel File. Students will: Describe the size of the solar system Describe how planets move around the sun California Standards: Science 2.g Students know the role of gravity in forming and maintaining the shapes of planets, stars, and the solar system. 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: c. Students know how to use astronomical units and light years as measures of distances between the Sun, stars, and Earth. e. Students know the appearance, general composition, relative position and size, and motion of objects in the solar system, including planets, planetary satellites, comets, and asteroids. ISTE NETS Students 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology. Preparation: Introduce Solar Walk App, set up class iPads/MacBooks, have Motion of the Planets on school server for student access, make sure school network is working, computer speakers ready to play Gustav Holst. Materials: iPad/MacBook Microsoft Excel Motion of the Planets Excel Worksheet Projector Speakers Glencoe Science: Focus on Physical Science Student Textbooks and Teachers Edition

Internet/School Network/Drive Wiki access and accounts Guided Instruction: Today, students will spend the period gathering specific data about the planets. They will be able to use Solar Walk App, Focus on Physical Science Glencoe Textbook and the following websites: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/scientists/johanneskepler.html http://www.kidsastronomy.com/kepler.htm http://encyclopedia.kids.net.au/page/la/Laws_of_Kepler http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/kids/ http://www.planetsforkids.org http://kids.nineplanets.org/intro.htm http://www.physics4kids.com/files/motion_gravity.html Students should have a textbook and either an iPad or MacBook on their desk. Show students how to open up The Motion of the Planets and Chapter 11 Resources on the school drive. Tell students they will be listening to Gustav Holst- Mercury Independent Activity: Students will focus on motion of planets (Keplers Laws of Planetary Motion), revolution and rotation, gravity, and planets distance from the sun. Students will record notes using the Excel file Motion of the Planets Have students submit finished work to the class Wiki.
