What do you know? Well spend the first few days finding out what you already know. Well discuss what we are going to be doing this semester and I would like some input from you about what you would like to learn. Why do you want to paint? During week one, we will also learn about the tools and materials used in painting, review color theory, composition, and the importance of observation and planning. PROJECTS: 7 paintings completed=70% of your total grade All projects are built around a 2 week time period. Some may run short and some may go over slightly over. You will be busy thinking critically, researching or planning at all times. It may seem like a lot of down time, but you will be very busy! These are the projects we will be working on: 1) Still Life-In class, we will explore 3 different artists in art history that have painted still life. Do some research on your favorite of the 3 and record that as your first sketchbook assignment along with some practice work. You will each create your own still life for painting and try to paint in the style of the artist you researched. We will be using acrylic on canvas board for this assignment. 2) Self-portrait-We will explore the importance of the self portrait. Why do artists do it? We will look at some famous and some not so famous self portraits in art history and in contemporary art. There will be a sketchbook assignment. You will paint your self-portrait in class using acrylic paints on canvas. 3) Portrait-We will study the Portrait. Why are they so important and what do you know about them? Well examine several, very different portraits in history. Of course, there will be a sketchbook assignment about the history and then some ideas of your own. Then, well use oil stick and QUICK (!), paint a partner in timed sessions on gessoed water color paper. 4) Landscape- Plein Air if weather permits. First we will study some wonderful landscape paintings and concentrate on the Impressionists in this case. Sketchbook responses will be in water color. After some indoor quick studies in oil on canvas sheets-we will go outside; you will pick a spot and begin your oil on canvas. 5) Interior landscape- For this project we will examine some old and some new interior paintings. You will be completing many sketches for this assignmentperspective will be extremely important for these. You will choose a spot in the painting room for this project. For this painting you will be using Gouache (opaque water color) on water color paper. This will add to the challenge. 6) Statement piece-At this point you should be feeling great about what you have learned about painting. We will examine 3 statement pieces (paintings), one of which will be GUERNICA, by Pablo Picasso! What is it about this painting that causes such an emotional reaction? We are going to study this and 2 more

paintings that make a statement. Well discuss them in great detail and then it will be your turn to research a statement painting of your choice, write and sketch about it in your sketchbook. Then you will create a statement piece of your own. We are going to use acrylic for this one, on 18x24 canvas. 7) Imagination- Your imagination, your choice. Well look at some paintings in history and some contemporary. We will look at surrealism and talk about dreams in paintings. I encourage you to plan this piece very carefully, use which ever paint or painting style you wish, on whatever ground you wish. Think of collaging images into this one, use the internet for images or add found objects. Also think about your ground-triptych? Use shapes, boards, etc, but make sure they are prepared so paint will adhere. Sketchbook requirement-10% of your grade Each Monday- You will be given a sketchbook assignment-due that Friday. You may be drawing, journaling or writing about research you have done. Each Friday- I will complete a sketchbook check. Critique requirement-5% of your grade When each project is completed, there will be a class critique where you will learn the proper vocabulary to discuss art. You will assess your own work and comment positively on the work of your peers. Quiz on materials-5% of your grade This quiz will be within the first 2 weeks of class, after we have discussed and explored the tools used in painting. You will know about it in advance. Final critique (5%) and gallery set up-(5%) of your grade When all projects are completed, we will have a 2 day critique in which everyone will participate. When the critique is completed you will have time to set up a gallery of all works in an available location in the school. This will be a class project-everyone will participate and work together to create a show that makes sense together and is shown as professionally as possible-complete with label. Your sketchbook assignment for the final week will be your artist statement!
