Genetics Unit In this unit you will be learning about how genes and heredity determine many of your

characteristics as well as the characteristics of all living things. In this unit you will have many opportunities to earn points for completed assignments. You will choose from a list of projects and handouts what you will complete during the unit. You must earn at least 20 points a week. You will also be responsible for Science Question of The Day handouts that will be due at the end of each week. Students will complete one weekly lesson which will include reading, discussing, and taking notes for a lesson. Students will create vocabulary cards. Students will have a weekly quiz over the lesson. Students will use the rest of the week to work on independent research, projects, and handouts. The Academic Content Standards that will be learned about genetics and heredity: Life Sciences Heredity 1. Describe that asexual reproduction limits the spread of detrimental characteristics through a species and allows for genetic continuity. 2. Recognize that in sexual reproduction new combinations of traits are produced which may increase or decrease an organism's chances for survival. Evolutionary Theory 3. Explain how variations in structure, behavior or physiology allow some organisms to enhance their reproductive success and survival in a particular environment. 4. Explain that diversity of species is developed through gradual processes over many generations (e.g., fossil record). 5. Investigate how an organism adapted to a particular environment may become extinct if the environment, as shown by the fossil record, changes. 1. Diversity of species occurs through gradual processes over many generations. Fossil records provide evidence that changes have occurred in number and types of species. 2. Reproduction is necessary for the continuation of every species. 3. The characteristics of an organism are a result of inherited traits received from parent(s).
