DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Unit Title: Public Art


Branch: Graphics Duration: 6 weeks

Context: The term public art refers to works of art in any media that have been planned
and executed with the specific intention of being sited or staged in the physical public domain, usually outside and accessible to all. The power of public Art You are to identify a site or area within the school where an intervention could take place. Create a presentation to give at the end of the project to show what you would like to do. How could your design bring colour, new life or a new look to a part of the school or area of the city. Design Task You are to design a piece of Public Art in Photoshop. This is graphic design project that will use graphic visualisations to imagine your work. How could a Public Art intervention be implemented with positive effect. Research, Design and then create images in Photosh op. Criteria Add all your work to your digital portfolio (Weebly). Use print screen to document all your work. Include research, initial ideas, anything that catches your eye and importantly, mistakes. It will represent evolution of your project ideas. List your inspirations and likes. Be proud of your taste and opinions on art and design, they matter, let them feed into your work: http://vimeo.com/24715531 3. Research Public Art that inspires you. Remember keep it simple. Gather images that you like and find interesting. At least 10. Why do they appeal to you? Comment on each one and why you like it. (See links below) 4. What is public Art? Why is it important? Write a paragraph describing what it is? 5. What are common themes in successful pieces? Contrast? Colour? Nature Vs Man made? Juxtaposition? Social commentary? Locatio n? Establish some rules of what you think makes a successful public art piece? What are the artist trying to do when they create these pieces of work? What do you want to celebrate? Who will be the audience? Write a clear design specification for what you hope to do? You must include: Try one of these techniques: Tilt shift Quote from poem or song on wall as stencil Juxtaposition of two images fro example: colourful wildlife in urban setting? Turning an inanimate object into something fun and interesting.

6. Watch Exit through the gift shop : what does this mean to you? Is it a hoax? What questions does it pose?

7. Complete a short essay on a chosen artist of your choice whose work is displayed publically. Do not choose Banksy look up other street artist Design & Plan 8. You cant believe everything you see or hear! The power of photo manipulation discussion on Photo manipulation in the modern media. How is this affecting individuals perception of self and others? How can this be changed? Write a short paragraph on this discussion and how this is affecting individuals? What is your opinion and thoughts on the future of this subject.? 9. Compile a set of design concept sketches/images for Public art proposal. Use visualisation to tell your storey (Photoshop). Experiment with a variety of ideas. You must show all your attempts and progress of your design using print screen. Upload these as you go along.Mistakes are good! Product & Evaluation 10. A final presentation on the piece, with a set of photos, visualisation and explanation of it 11. Evaluation of own work and each others work with comments. Have you met your design specification. Students are respectful of all teaching staff and each other. They respect the working environment. They are committed to learning with few absences, punctual and work is completed as requested. They work consistently and have ongoing work to represent their ideas during and at the end of the project. They develop the ability to reflect on the work they have completed.
