FDRs address was written in the hopes of convincing the American people to stand proud and fear nothing. In the face of economic depression, the country was extremely weak and needed a strong leader to get back on track. By saying let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself--nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. He intended to show the country that the only way to recover from depression is to overcome the fear caused by it. Fear is an illusion, and some may consider it a state of mind. FDR was one of those people. He relates himself to the common man by saying In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. This gave people a reason to trust him because it showed that they are all citizens of the United States, no matter what their title may be.

This new state of mind allowed everyone to come together and work hard to recover what had been lost in the great depression. This speech was very effective because after giving it, America picked up and started to move forward again. When he said Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. it had a huge effect on the country. People started doing things again and made money and spent money.
