1. The position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group.
What is your definition of leadership?
During EDGE and along your leadership development journey, we will provide you with the means to
answer this question. How you answer the question is up to you. This action planning guide is one of
the tools you will use to help you define your leadership at Walgreens.
This action planning guide is an important part of your development during EDGE. In addition to the
information you will learn in your workshops and application exercises, this is a development
workbook that you create highlighting what you believe is critical to your leadership development.
How to Use Your Action Planning Guide

Bring your guide to each of the workshops:


o Record workshop notes that you find important to your development and leadership
growth.
o Record key thoughts during panel discussions & executive leader presentations.
o Create your action plan at the end of each workshop. What are you going to do in
between your leadership workshops to enhance your leadership behaviors? Answer this
question to set your action plan in motion.
Bring your guide to your coaching & mentoring discussions:
Record your discussions, notes, and any actions you will take as a result of these discussions.
Refer to your guide In between workshops and formal discussions:
o Use the blank pages to jot down ideas, thoughts and observations to refer to later.
o Complete your action plan.
Record your notes while completing HMM modules & GetAbstract readings:
o Record general thoughts and takeaways that you would like to reference later or
during the workshops.
Bring your guide to Action Learning Team discussions:
o Record your plans, outcomes from discussions, and any actions you need to take.

Self-Directed Leadership Development


It has been said time and time again that many want to become leaders but few are willing to make
the sacrifices and commitment it requires to get there. What is the common factor amongst
successful leaders? Good leaders continuously create development opportunities for themselves
beyond those offered in leadership workshops and development programs. Strong leaders
understand that they can improve on their skills and acumen from leadership development
programs. Great leaders take it a step further by taking responsibility for their personal growth and
making leadership development a part of their daily routines.
Self-Directed Development Techniques

Perform positive and impactful self-examinations. Do not turn self-examinations into selfcriticism; apply what youve learned into future work situations.
Learn from other leaders. Dont simply leverage the content learned in a workshop but pay
attention to the process of various work-related relationships. Compare your behavior to your
peers and other leaders and pull from their leadership practices. Use their skills and
incorporate the behaviors into your own leadership arsenal.
Analyze your own performance as a leader so you can set goals and create a map to
achieving excellence. Ask yourself, How do my leadership skills stack up to the leaders I have
observed? Which leadership skills am I good at and which ones should I take to a greater
level of proficiency?
Create opportunities to apply what you have learned. Be responsive to upcoming meetings
and interactions as a way to enhance your strengths and decrease your weaknesses. This
requires initiative and solid plan because it is oftentimes hard to break behavior patterns of the
past. Once you have practiced, seek out feedback from a manager and/or peer. Identify
what worked well and what could have been done better with the goal of applying what you
learned to future interactions.
Continue along the journey of becoming a great leader. Becoming a strong leader will require
life-long dedication and commitment to a continuous developmental cycle of development
and examination. New development should be focused on enhancing strengths and
identifying weaknesses. It is only you that will decide how far you will go!

Now Lets Get Going!


There are many ways to put self-directed development into action. One of the
ways you develop yourself as a leader is to develop your team members at the
same time! Every conversation, coaching or mentoring discussion you have with
them is a step in the direction towards your own development.
Using your own personal leadership experiences is a great way to develop and position yourself as a
great leader. Look at your most recent situations and ask these three simple questions: What worked
well? What are my areas of opportunity? What would you do differently? These are key questions to
ask yourself anytime you experience a leadership learning opportunity.

You Dont Have to Do This on Your Own


You will not be embarking on this journey by yourself. Along the way, you will you
will be working with coaches who will help you create and work through your
individual self-assessments, 360 surveys and development plan.
Your mentors will provide guidance to you throughout the E.D.G.E. program. They will consistently
meet with you to help build you in the leadership competencies and also build your organizational
acumen.
As mentioned earlier, great leaders take initiative in their leadership journey. Be proactive in initiating
contact with your coaches, mentors and peers.
Various senior leaders will be joining you during EDGE. Take full advantage of the time they have
committed to your development ask questions challenge the status quo.
You and your peers are in this together. Take full advantage of your peer coaching opportunities to
conduct gut checks, seek advice, and drive towards solutions.

Breaking Down the Wall


As long as were being open and honest, lets face it: This looks good on paper
but does this translate to the Walgreens world? When you have stores and
pharmacies to run; you have kids to pick up; you have a home repair project to
finish; you have a presentation to give in the morning; is self-directed
development is going to take a back-seat?
The first time that you are stretched, you may place this book and put it on the shelf. You may stop
asking yourself those hard questions and stop pushing yourself towards greatness. You will often go
through the following process:
I really should make note of actions I will take to improve on this. Youll slowly ponder whether you
really have the time for this soft stuff. If I devote the time to this, I wont have the time to put
together the community event Ive been working on. I know my manager will not be happy with me
if I dont have this community event completed. I know Ill work on putting my action plan this
weekend. Yeah, this weekend. Hmmmmbut we have the kids lacrosse tournament on Saturday
and my in-laws for dinner on Sunday
The next thing you know, the next two years are spoken for. Not only the next two years have been
spoken for, the last 15 minutes has passed. In those 15 minutes you could have developed an action
plan and engaged yourself in self-directed development. The lesson here isno amount of time is
too short to spend on your development. The more often you do it the more it becomes a part of
your daily leadership routine.
In addition to the self-debate that played out above--referring to development as soft stuff or
neglecting to recognize your development on the same level of importance as you do traditional
business operationsis full of mental walls that we put up that impede your success.
Lets start to break down this wall, brick by brick! Answer the following questions while being honest:

Be careful not to confuse the two. Oftentimes what we think others control, we control ourselves. The

magically flip; its a process, its work and its commitment.

How many activities should I have listed?
You should focus your efforts on fewer development activities with the assurance of significant
change in behavior / impact. Given the amount of feedback received, you should identify
anywhere from 2-4 development activities.
I sometimes struggle with identifying meaningful development activities. Do you have any advice?
70% of your development plan should be focused on Experiential Activities, 20% on Exposure
Activities, and 10 % on Education Activities. See the Appendix for definitions and examples of each.
