STEM Fair Guidelines for Research Report

Hypothesis and Research Paper: a. You will hand in a research paper that will include your topic, question, hypothesis, and background information organized into paragraph form. b. The Purpose statement explains why you are conducting this experiment and how the experiment will seek to answer the question. c. The Hypothesis is an educated guess about what you think will happen in your experiment and it should answer your question. You may find out later that you hypothesis is incorrect. d. A descriptive paragraph explaining how your research helped you develop your hypothesis. e. A working bibliography will be developed to document your sources. The bibliography must contain at least three sources (i.e. informational text, periodical, encyclopedia, and internet) Record and Study the Data: Make good observations in a journal and keep detailed records of timings, distances, quantities, and so on. Your raw data will need to be converted to final data tables, charts and graphs for your presentation. My Conclusion: Written in Paragraph Form a. In the introductory paragraph restate your hypothesis and tell whether it was proved valid or invalid. b. In the second paragraph write about the results of experiment and what they showed. Refer back to the research and use scientific vocabulary. Explain controls and variables. c. In the third paragraph explain what was learned from this experiment and why you think you got the results you got. d. In the fourth paragraph write about what you would change if you could do this experiment again. e. In the concluding paragraph write about the new I Wonders you have since completing this project.

How to Complete the Written Report

o Do this assignment on your own sheet(s) of notebook paper o If youd like, you may type this report- but you dont have to o If you want to type it, please observe the following guidelines Times New Roman font (black only) Size 12 font, double spaced o Make a title page o Includes the project title , your name, schools name: Martin School, Grade 6, and the date centered on the page o Table of Contents with page numbers where each section begins; number your pages beginning with the introduction o On the next pages, use the proper lab report format to put the following sections together (in order) o Introduction question, variables, controls, background information/research in your own words, key words/definitions o Hypothesis o Materials List (with quantities) o Procedures o Explanation How you conducted your experiment and how it went. Any interesting observations while conducting the experiment. o Results with tables, graphs, diagrams and pictures o Conclusion o Bibliography o Make sure you edit and revise your rough draft. Please see Mrs. Kernisky if you need her to look over your report. o Assemble your report in a report cover or folder
