Physical development

Angela should be able to sit independently, and have mastered rolling over. She should also be on all fours and do baby push-ups Angela should be able to start crawling soon. The next step in her physical development would be to start pushing her self up while holding on to furniture. Although according to Arnold Gesell, children learn at their own pace. Angela doesnt seem to have developed any large muscle development. She is unable to sit supported in a highchair at 8 months old. Although she is able to hold on to her cracker, so she has developed small muscle development.

I would have liked to see some toys on the floor like balls of different sizes and colors, building blocks, nesting toys where Angela could put her blocks or balls. Also some push toys would be great to promote walking, and of course plenty of books. Empty coffee cans make for great drums and are fun to make noise with as well as being great to build gross and fine motor skills with. I would like Angela to be on the floor as much as possible so she can develop her gross muscle development.

Cognitive development

Angela seems to only be able to communicate through her crying. Although Angela should be able to babble like, baba, mama, dada. Since no one is talking to Angela she doesnt get any practice at babbling.

It would have been nice if her parents had engaged Angela in conversation. For example instead of just giving her another cracker her mom could have asked her if she would like another one. Maybe she was thirsty and wanted something to drink with her cracker. Had Angela already eaten diner before hand was the cracker

like a desert for her?

Social/emotional development

Her social and emotional development is not being met. Her parents seam to have to many problems that they forget to take care of Angelas social and emotional needs. Like holding, and comforting her they should also have listened to her cries. Not listening to Angelas needs makes her unsure of her self and she can become delayed in many areas of her development because her basic needs are not being meet. Abraham Maslow

Her parent should have taken her out of the high chair the first time she fell down and got hurt. They should have paid more attention to Angela and focused less on their problems. When they were done eating they should have changed Angelas clothing and possible have given her a bath especially since she hade cracker crumbs all over her face and on her clothing. Plus bath time would have been a nice opportunity for Angela and her mom to spend some fun time together before Angela went down for bed. It would have been great if Angela would have had a bedtime routine and would be able to sleep in a different room and maybe even in a crib rather then in a playpen. I think this case is almost on the edge of child neglect especially if this is the every day normal.

Using the developmental theories studied in this course; explain in a short paragraph why the ideas you identified will create a developmentally appropriate learning environment for each child. Make sure to include the scholarly sources using APA parenthetical citations.

It is obvious to me that the basic needs are not being met for Angela. I dont know what her mom did feed her for dinner other then crackers. She did not offer her any thing to drink. After dinner she scolded her for making a mess although that is developmental appropriate behavior of an eight month old to make messes. There is also no communication going on between Angelas parents and Angela. It almost seems as if Angela is invisible and a bother to both of her parents. I feel really sad for Angela. I would like to see a more positive environment where Angelas entire Social and emotional needs are being meet as well as her physical needs.

All areas of development are important with an emphasis on physical growth and abilities. (Arnold Gesel) Emphasize the importance of healthy parent-child interactions and relationships. (Sigmund Freud) Meet young childrens needs for safety and belonging during the early years. (Abraham Maslow)

It is not stated how Jeremys physical development is. I would assume that he is developing normal in this area.

He is in third grade so it would be nice to have a designated reading area where the children could sit and read when they are finished with an activity. It would be great if it would have some pillows on the floor so that students could lie on their tummies when they are reading. Which is great for core strength.

Cognitive development

Im assuming that his language is pretty good especially since he likes to read.

As a teacher I would talk to his mom about the problem with Jeremys reading and math skills. I would suggest her to take Jeremy to see an optometrist, to have his eyes checked. I would not tell his mom that he has a vision problem; that is the doctors job. But I can suggest it.

Social/emotional development

He might start to feel like a failure, especially since he cannot see the words right. His selfconfidence is probably going down. He is being a class clown so that his classmates laugh at him for being funny instead of them laughing at his reading mistakes.

As a techer I could talk to Jeremy about his reading and math challenges, and tell him that it may be because of his eyes. That it is not his fault that he has this problem. I would also talk to the class about this so that they have to be kind and considerate of each other.

I think by supporting Jeremy and telling him that its not any fault of his own that he cant see clearly. He will probably be able to see properly after seeing an eye doctor. I would also talk to the class about vision problems so that every one is aware on the effects it can have. Hopefully no one feels the need to be a class clown or tease his or her fellow classmates.
Gallahue & Doneely theorizes that at Jeremiahs age children are starting to become self-critical, and are getting involved in testing and putting down otters. (2007) Maslow Describes the needs for self-actualization and self esteem are uniquely human and shared with no other animals
