About Mr. Baker Mr. Baker was born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona and majored in English and Creative Writing, going on to eventually receive a Masters of Education. He enjoys hiking, playing basketball, watching sports, drinking coffee and watching various sports events. He has a dog named Bubble and often spends his spare time either taking Bubble to the dog park or reading. Class Information Welcome to Freshman English! Freshman English is a general language course that focuses primarily on reading and writing skills. With the implementation of the Common Core standards, students will be given continuous direction in mechanics and writing. Additionally, the course will cover topics such as: vocabulary, comprehension, and literary elements. We will explore these topics through novels, short stories, poetry, nonfiction, myths and drama. Writing Students will be instructed towards meeting district standards through a variety of writing assignments that are aligned with the Common Core standards. Students will fulfill writing assignments in the following: research, narrative, argument/analysis, and expository writing. Writing will be evaluated by a grade level standardized rubric that will be given to students at the beginning of the year. Reading Students will read a number of texts and learn to read at all levels: interpretive, evaluative and literal. Students will participate in silent reading. Most readings in class will come from the class text Elements of Literature. Supplemental texts may include, but are not limited to: Animal Farm Romeo and Juliet The Odyssey Fahrenheit 451 Videos/ Movies Videos/ Movies may be used in the classroom to supplement readings. Movies/Videos that may be used throughout the school year include: The Odyssey PG-13 The Most Dangerous Game (1932) NR Animal Farm (1999) NR Romeo & Juliet (1960s version) PG Romeio & Juliet (1990s version) PG-13 Disneys Hercules G

Grading Students will receive grades based on individual assignments. Grades of individual assignments will be averaged in order to find the overall grade for progress reports and report cards. Grades with a .5 or above will be rounded up. Grades will be made available online through the schools online system so students and parents can monitor progress. Missing Assignments If students are missing assignments or assignments are not completed they will be assigned to academic intervention programs in order to make up the assignments. Late assignments may be subject to a one letter grade deduction if unexcused.

Students will be allowed three free tardies. On the fourth tardy the student will receive lunch detention. Students will be considered tardy if they are not in their seat when the bell rings. Consequences for Good Behavior: Verbal Praise Rewards through class prize incentive program (including extra bathroom passes, extra credit, candy, games etc.) Parent contact

Negative Consequences: 1st- Warning 2nd- Student Conference 3rd- Parental Contact 4th- Referral

*Consequences are subject to change based on severity of the behavior

Class procedures
Seating: Seats will be assigned at the beginning of the quarter but will change periodically at the teachers discretion. Participation: Students will raise their hand during class discussions in order to speak. Interjecting without raising hands will not be allowed unless warranted by the instructor. Attention: Cues will be given to the class in order to ask for attention. Failure to acknowledge these cues may result in disciplinary action Collecting & Returning Assignments: Assignments will be turned in to the assignment basket and assignment will be returned at the beginning of class. Dismissal: Class will be dismissed by the teacher, not by the bell.

Bathroom Passes Students will be awarded three bathroom passes per quarter. Bathroom passes that are not used can be turned in at the quarters end in exchange for extra credit. Supplies Needed: 1. 2. 3. 4. 3- ring binder College rule paper Pen (standard blue or black ink) No.2 pencil
