The carnival truly never sleeps. As soon as one ends, the planning for the next one starts.
Carnival is a big deal. We look forward to it every year. Planning how you spend your time and money is essential to having the ultimate experience. Here are some tips to save your money and still have a good time.

it could easily fall out. If possible, leave your backpack at home. Rides (1 ride coupon = 3 scrips) Rides are always the priciest things to do. Some good advice would be to go on the rides before instead of playing games. Certain rides are discounted from 11am-2pm on Friday and would cost less. Go on expensive rides at these times. Another tip is to go on your favorite ride rst so you dont get held up in a line. But, dont waste all your money on rides, so you can experience other things like food and games. The Zipper is the most expensive ride of all, costing 4 ride coupons, which is 12 scrip. It is not smart to spend $6 on one ride. The line in always crowded and takes a long time to get on. So, we dont recommend you to go on this ride.

But if you must, just go on it one time. Try not to blow your money. We suggest you go on the three to four coupon rides. Theyre usually fun to ride on and you wont spend a lot of money on just one ride.

Scrip (1 scrip = 50 cents) Bringing money to school on the day of carnival is always a smart thing to do. You dont want to go to Carnival empty handed. You can buy up to $20 worth of scrips from your teachers. Another good thing to do is to keep your money safe.. Keep your money in a wallet or in your small bag while you're walking around. You dont want to leave it in your pocket or in your shoe because

Interesting Facts
Falling in love can help you to remember things, because it calms the mind and body. Archduke Maximillian from Austria started the tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring by giving one to his wife, Mary of Burgundy, in the 15th century. Engagement rings are worn on the fourth nger of your left hand because ancient Greeks believed that the fourth nger had the vena amoris or the vein of love, which was the vein that goes directly to your heart. The rst wedding rings found were from the ancient Greeks, who used the circle to represent eternity.

What is Love?
By Clarise Huang Love can be described in many ways: some say that love is blind, some say it is chemistry, some say that it is a passionate commitment, a storyline, or just an emotion. Kaya Lee 19 thinks Its an awkward subject. And for children at our age, it is. At the same time, people may have some other thoughts about it too, such as Kelsey Ou 19. At first she thought of a guy smacking a girl with a bouquet of roses screaming, Accept my love. Love is something that has been studied extensively, and isnt easy to define. Love can be good and bad for you. It is good only if youre with the right person. Love is good for your health: chances of depression are lower, and you live longer than people who are single, divorced, or widowed. The faults of a person are ignored, and this shutdown of the brain can last from 1 to 2 # years. Love can also be unhealthy, literally. When you break up with someone, it can cause a broken heart, and those can actually hurt you. Some people actually die because of a broken heart. So why do people fall in love? You may have an idea of what your dream partner would be like, but most people fall in Photo by Clarise Huang love with people they have known for a while. Also, if someone shows attraction towards you, you may feel attraction to them, too. The factors and characteristics that are most important to many or contribute to falling in love are kindness and intelligence, and almost nothing to do with attractiveness or appearance. Love is something you have to be careful with. If it is right for you, then it will make you a happier, healthier person.
Valentines Day is the second most popular card-giving holiday.

X is used as a symbol for a kiss. This could have started because in medieval times, when most people couldnt sign their names, they wrote an x and kissed it to show sincerity. Red roses are usually the ower given on Valentines Day because this was the favorite ower of the Roman goddess of love, Venus.

Valentine Fun Facts...
by Eden Chun

About 190 million cards are sent every year in the U.S, and about half of those cards go to family members.

As the interest in technology has gone up, the number of e-valentines has gone up too. In 2010, a whopping 15 million virtual cards were sent out. Thats about 10,000 times more than the number of students at Punahou from K-7th grade.

History of Valentines Day

by Edlin Davis and Lindsay Kaback Love is in the air this Valentines Day! Chocolate, candy hearts, and roses. Some people hate it, some people love it, but does anyone actually know the history of Valentines Day? This holiday dates back to 269 BC, when Saint Valentine, a priest in Rome, got thrown into prison. Saint Valentine disobeyed Emperor Claudius II, by performing marriages for young lovers in secret. He was discovered and got sentenced to be beaten with clubs and beheaded. Unfortunately, Valentine fell in love with the jailors daughter, who visited him in prison. Prior to his death, he wrote a letter to his lover signed with the message, From your Valentine. On February 14, the day he wrote the letter, he received his punishment. Thus, the Pope Gelasius put aside February 14 to remember Saint Valentine. Another version of the story says that Hera, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses, who is also known as the goddess of marriage and women, was the founder of the holiday. On February 15, Hera began the Festival of Lupercalia. In those days, boys and girls lived separate lives and rarely did anything together, but on the eve of the Festival of Lupercalia (February 14th), Roman girls names were written on slips of paper and put into jars. The young men would choose a girls name to be their partner for the rest of the festival. The pairing of the children usually lasted around a year, and many would soon fall in love and later marry. Valentines day might be something you dread, but the history of this holiday is denitely an interesting one.

Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year.

About 8 billion candy hearts will be made this year; $ thats enough candy to stretch from Italy to Arizona 20 times and back again!

The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day.

Richard Cadbury invented the rst Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s (Cadbury Chocolate Candy Company)

A: We actually start a year ahead immediately after one ends. Q: What are you looking forward about this years carnival? Is there anything new? A: One of the new things we are excited about is some retro t-shirts that we have brought back, so they will be in the t-shirt booth. We have different t-shirt designs: malasdas, hakulei and the mango chutney t- shirts. Q: What is your favorite thing about carnival? A: The most exciting part is the opening of carnival at 11-o-clock. All the kids get out of school and you can see the flow of happy faces coming to the fair grounds. Q: How stressful is planning for carnival? A: It can be stressful because there are a lot of things that come at you all at once. Sometimes it means troubleshooting or changing things, but its actually a very fun job.

Labyrinths: A Metaphor for the Journey of Life

by TJ Johnson and Ryan Park Lars Howlett, who specializes in photography and building labyrinths came to Punahou on January 13 through January 23. During his visit, he completed 10 different labyrinths throughout campus.

realize that sometimes you need to calm down and breathe when things are going too fast, said Deke Masciangelo 19. The labyrinth made me feel dizzy at first. Then I got to the center, and I felt more relaxed. I get a lot of stuff thrown on me, like homework and after school stuff. When I am done with it, I feel better and I can rest easy, expressed Kelsey Ou 19. The labyrinth is like my life. It had many twists and turns. I got confused at times, but I found my way in the end, remarked Wilder Worrall 19.

POPS 2014
By Clarise Huang and Edlin Davis POPS 2014 was a huge hit. The classes of 2018 and 2019 shared their unique talents. There were a variety of acts like poetry, gloving, singing, skits, and dancing. A total of 37 performers participated in the event.
Nick Laa brought down the house with Breakeven by The Script

Kalliyan Davis 18 (guitar & vocals) and Naia Young-Kingsbury 18 (drums & vocals) sang and played Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys.

Shyen Hirabayashi, Riley Noland and Rielle Sanidad sang a trio while Erin Azuma (piano), Chelsea Cline (violin), and Sydnie Ito (cello) accompanied their performance of Stay

Four Chords inspired by Axis of Awesome performed by eighth graders: Malia Kiang, Kyra Mulvey, Lucy Murphy as the vocalists, Nick Amador and Dave Vincent

The POPS show was directed by Marlene Patton and Alicia Scanlan, and was performed on January 27, 28, and 31. The show opened with Alyssa Lo 18 and Marie Oberlin 18 doing an original slam poem titled Picture Frame, an powerful piece about tting in. The act was followed by Gabe El-Hajji 19 and Trevor Powell 19 glove dancing. These two gloved to the Cappa Regime remix of the song Roar by Katy Perry. Their hands were lit by colorful LED lights as they danced. Eighth graders, Shyen Hirabayashi, Riley Noland and Rielle Sanidad sang a trio while Erin Azuma (piano), Chelsea Cline

18. It was hilarious act with the faux lady, frustrated tourist, and pidgin speaking chef. The show returned to music as Kalliyan Davis 18 (guitar & vocals) and Naia Young-Kingsbury 18 (drums & vocals) sang and played Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys. It was amazing to see the duet play and sing at the same time. Erin Azuma 18 played Fantasie Impromptu Op. 66 in C sharp minor by Frederic Chopin on the piano. Her ngers moved unbelievably fast as she played the delightful piece. The piano fantasy led to an original skit called Are You Smarter Than a Kindergartener?, written and performed by Kristen Pang 18, Tamara Sato 18 and Jayci Tsuhako 18 who acted as a gameshow host and two Kindergarteners. After some laughs, Katarina Jenkins 19 and Grace Spotswood 19, with accompanist Zach Uchima 18 performed a mashup of Counting Stars by Ryan Tedder and Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus. Jenkins and Spotswood blended beautifully together during their duet and stood out during their solos. They were followed by an amazing street dance performed by Kaila Mann 18 who danced to Lip Gloss by Lil Mama. Her dance was expressive and entertaining. Another original slam poetry called Children of Music was

performed by Franny Bell 18. It was a contrast to all types of music, and it was a profound piece on how music affects all deeply and changes our lives. Four Chords inspired by Axis of Awesome was performed by eighth graders: Malia Kiang, Kyra Mulvey, and Lucy Murphy as the vocalists, Nick Amador on piano and vocals, and Dave Vincent on the drums. It was a song that satirized how most pop songs are made of Four Chords. Their use of props and choreography made the number hysterically funny. Seventh graders Miya Heulitt, Malia Munley, Lana Reeves and Keila Wong performed Kaleidoscope Heart/Uncharted by Sara Bareilles. Their voices harmonized well together. Remy Fung 19 and Keely Thompson 19 danced to a remix of Summertime Sadness and Titanium by Trevor Powell 19. They moved gracefully to the medley. Fate Yanagi from Raps Hawaii, written by Rap Reiplinger was performed by Tanner Haworth 18 and Zach Uchima 18. It was a hilarious scene. Seventh grader Nick Laa brought down the house with Breakeven by The Script while playing on the ukulele. I think this one was the best one yet, exclaimed Ms. Mazzullo. I think POPS is a really memorable experience. Its really fun if you like performing, because you get to be around other people who like to perform, even if theyre not doing the same type of act.

Keely Thompson 19 said after her rst POPS show. The people who were in POPS had only three weeks to prepare, and they met only twice a week with Mrs. Scanlan, Mrs. Patton, or Mrs. Lyman-Mersereau. All the performers worked hard, and POPS denitely showed their hard work and amazing talents.

Excerpt from Children of Music

By Franny Bell This poem is for those who find music as an escape, for those who find their jail cells of judgment smashed to bits when they hear a note. This is for altos and baritones, tenors, basses, sopranos and mezzo-sopranos. For instrument players, and for the radio listeners. This is for those who would literally not be able to survive without music. ! This is for the children of Apollo, the ones who swear on their lives that when they hear good music they can fly to the moon and back. !This poem is for kids who can't get anything done without music. ! I would literally drive myself insane without music. Getting by without music is just not an option. !Music taught me how to let go, I could be free with music. ! Music keeps me alive.

Sweet Hearts, A Perfect Valentine Candy

Anya Zoraster & Katelyn Hamasaki Kelsey Ou & Jaime Tamashiro What candy is iconic of Valentines Day? Heart-shaped chocolates wrapped in pink and red foil? Or heart candies that have thoselovey dovey sayings on them?! Weve always associated Valentines with sweetheart candies. Theyre not diamonds, but Sweethearts candiesthose tiny heart-shaped confections with embossed endearmentsmay be the sweetest way to get your message across on Valentines Day. Where did these Sweet Heart candies come from?

By the early 1900s, the shape of the candy had changed from shells, to baseballs and horseshoes to hearts. As the little hearts grew in popularity, the messages grew shorter: Miss You, Love U. Original mottos from the candys rst appearance in 1902, such as Be Mine, Be True and Kiss Me, remain very popular. Such classic romantic phrases havent changed in more than a century, but others have come and gone. The company tries to take a few suggestions, adding variety to their candy. Currently, they reect the language of popular culture and Internet slangs: You Rock, Text Me, Me & U.

Last year, for the rst time, NECCO solicited suggestions directly from the public on a special website. It received more than 10,000

submissions and the companys marketing team selected the most popular. Tweet Me, Text Me and Love Bug were the top three. In the past, the mottos were tied to themes, such as the weather Heat Wave, Chill Out and Cloud 9 and pets U R a Tiger, Go Fish and Love Bird. A few years ago, Necco began producing imprints for fans of the popular vampire novel series Twilight: Bite Me, Dazzle, and Live 4 Ever. The company has also tinkered with the Sweethearts avors. Marketing research showed that children prefer bolder tastes and colors, which replaced older avors. This caused a bit of a backlash from sentimental baby boomers who wanted their old candy back. Facebook pages were created to spread the word and fans ranted on blogs about the new confections: toxic, tastes like aspirin. But they arent just made sugar avored, there are other avors too. The other avors include chocolate, tart, and smoothie. The usual avor is completely made out of sugar, which could be bad for you. But there is a sugar free version, so if you dont really want to throw a chunk of sugar in your mouth, theres always that option. Other avors dont really taste that good. A few people were asked how the fruity avors tasted, and they replied, Not that good. Although the taste can make you go, Yuck, Sweethearts are still a pretty popular candy during Valentines Day. The Sweetheart candies are guaranteed to get your message across and make people happy. Who will you be sending it to on Valentines Day? $$$

Velcro, an Invention Inspired by Nature.

By Megan Buras and Izzy Leyshon Believe it or not, Velcro was actually inspired by nature. A Swiss engineer in 1948 named George de Mestral, went for a hike in the woods with his dog. When he came home, Mestral noticed the burrs clinging to his clothes. After studying them under a microscope, he discovered the burrs had tiny hooks, allowing them to latch onto anything. Realizing this could be useful, Mestral decided to research. After eight years, George de Mestral created what today is known as Velcro, a combination of velvet and crochet. Velcro has one side with tiny little hooks covering its face, and the other side covered with microscopic loops. When you stick them together, the hooks and loops connect to one another. Though when the two pieces are torn apart, it makes a ripping sound as the hooks are disconnected. Velcro today helps people by replacing things like buttons, zippers and buckles. It would never have been thought that something so useful was inspired by mother nature herself.

Although the student, didnt say anything, it was evident that she was hurt by the insult. $ Feeling clueless and unsure of what to do, she just ignored her comment, and continued to bear her insults. But what is the best way to cope with this situation? Here are some ways to deal with the situation. Dont lose your cool and start to yell, youll only make things worse. Those who try to get their point across by screaming and shouting, dont get the respect theyre looking for. Next, while encountering the insulter dont show any signs of helplessness. Looking helpless makes you a target, and could result into more insults. Try your best to look like their remarks dont affect you, and continue to reassure yourself that what theyre saying is not true. Finally, you must engage in a conversation with them, that is, if you want them to quit insulting you. But to make sure all things go well throughout, dont confront or accuse them of anything. Instead, you can use your sense of humor, and turn the whole thing into a joke. An example would be like,

What Makes You Feel Better When Youre Down?! !

Izzy Leyshon Have you ever been sad for no good reason and just cant cheer up? Here are some ideas of something to make you feel better that our News Journalism staff use: Spending time with pets Listening to uplifting music Watching a good movie or TV show Reading your favorite book Talking out everything with a good friend

Oh my gosh! I love dogs! But, would you consider me to be more of a chow-chow with its adorable chubby cheeks, or like a pit-bull with its, to die for, smile? But, be aware that the bully might be one of those I must have the last say, kind of person, and may continue to throw around insults. Anot her ef fective option according to Mrs. Ralston, Middle School Counselor, is the bleak, non emotional response, stating how they are rude and how you dont like the way that theyre treating you. If the insults keep coming, Mrs. Ralston suggests that you, again suggest that theyre being rude and how you dont like how youre being treated, and just walk away. But what do you do if things still dont change, and youre still not getting the respect you know you deserve? If things get to the point where the person keeps harassing you, there are two things you can do. You can just ditch the person and surround yourself with positive people. You can also inform a t r u s t e d a d u l t , l i ke a p a r e n t , supervisor, teacher, or counselor. Adults, tend to know exactly what to do in these specic kind of situations, because they also have experienced similar situations and have dealt with it in their own ways. If, youre still very hesitant about informing an adult, rest assure that asking for an adult intervention is always helpful.
Do: While discussing your feelings keep their feelings in mind too. Maybe there is a misinterpretation. Dont: Lose your temper to their claims. The purpose of an insult is to cause someone to react a certain way that either brings one person a sense of joy or entertainment.

Painting your nails is fun to do, and fun to show off, if you have the time, patience, and money. Before you start, remember to only paint/remove your polish in well ventilated areas. Chemicals in the paint can set off your smoke alarm or catch re. Too much of them can also damage your health. Bottles of nail polish can be anywhere from $2-20 for one bottle, depending on the brand. Some popular brands are O.P.I, Revlon, Essie, and Sally Hansen. Dont pick at your nail polish. Nail polish is made to last. But sometimes it lasts a little too long and you want to get rid of it. Picking at it is not the way to do it. Picking can damage your nails by peeling off little bit of your nail. You should use nail polish remover instead. It was meant for the job, and some removers have minerals and vitamins that are good for your nails and cuticles. Remember to always keep your nails clean!
Caring for your nails: 1) Dont bite on them! Biting on your fingernails gets germs in your mouth, and can get you sick. 2) Remember to clip your nails. To prevent ingrown nails, dont cut your nails curved. Try to cut them as straight

across as you can, but dont cut them too short!

Your Daily Hair Process

1. Washing How often you need to wash your hair? Washing your hair daily can cause damage. 2. Conditioning Conditioner makes your hair softer and provides moisture. Apply towards the ends or midlengths of your hair. Otherwise your hair will look greasy. 3. Brushing Avoid brushing when your hair is wet because your hair is more fragile when it is wet. 4. Drying Rough towel drying can cause damage to the outer layer of your hair. This damage can contribute to extra frizziness or fluffy hair. Pat down your hair gently with a towel. 5. Hair Dryer Frequent use of the hair dyer can cause spilt ends, breakage, and can dry out your hair. Although, naturally drying your hair out is the best way, if you have to use a hair dyer do not handle it too close to your hair, as it can burn the outer layers.

Healthy Hair
By Erica Sung Hair inuences us such as the latest styles or accessories. However, it is good to know what options there are to maintain and explore your hair while keeping it healthy. Each person has his or her own personality, and your hair can be an expression of it. $ Hair is made of three layers: the cuticle scales, which give your hair its color, and the medulla and cortex are the two inner layers. $Hair breakage happens when points in the hair thicken or weaken. If your hair tends not to grow as long, the breakage near the scalp could be the reason. Improper use of chemicals, brushes, and treatments can cause this. Also, leaving in a braid or extension for too long can cause this. Everyone expresses their personality through hairstyle. There are different styles that use different materials. Which one would you like to try? Relaxers make your hair straight by breaking chemical bonds of curliness in the hair. You would have to wait six weeks before you straighten again. There is a possibility of hair damage or split ends if you continuously straighten your hair. Another style is a perm and it turns your hair curly/wavy. You can choose how thick you want your curls. Again, there is a possibility of hair damage. Coloring or dyeing your hair is probably the most familiar treatment we know. There are two types of coloring: permanent and semi-permanent. Permanent coloring stays in your hair until your hair grows out, while semipermanent coloring fades away after washing your hair a few times. Most importantly, to maintain healthy hair you should get haircuts regularly. Regular haircuts prevent split ends and your hair can grow faster since it is not breaking off because of split ends. Although your hair is sometimes overlooked, it is an important part of yourself that tells who you are to others. After all, hair is like a permanent clothing you will always wear, so make sure to give it some care and choose a style that is right for you.

How do you maintain your hair? I wash my hair daily and make sure not to sleep on it when its wet. Also, I brush after it dries. ! -Rinka Shimizu 18 I use shampoo and conditioner and I dont use much hair products or get special treatments done, such as straightening. -Samantha Dowling18

I wash and use conditioner, and thats about it. I just dont do anything that may damage my hair...I actually died my hair pink over the summer, but from going in the pool and over time the pink faded and it turned into blond because of the bleach we put on it before . My hair is not straightened but I do straighten it sometimes. " " -Emma Gusman 18

Why Do Superstorms Happen?

By Edlin Davis

Helpful Websites: www.hawaii.org/health/ BT/kit.html www.getreadyhawaii.org

Through recent years, there have been many superstorms around the world, which are all rated at different intensities. Some of the recent superstorms are Typhoon Fegshen, Hurricane Ida, Tropical Storm Agatha, Typhoon Washi, to the most intense storm to ever hit landfall, Typhoon Haiyan. This leads us to the big question: Why do these superstorms hit landfall in the rst place? The answer: GLOBAL WARMING. Global warming is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earths atmosphere. It occurs because of the radiation that comes from the sun. This heat that we are receiving from the sun, gets trapped by greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The heat is actually a good thing: it keeps our planet warm. But as we put more and more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere from burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and other natural gases), the natural carbon cycle is unable to remove all the additional, unneeded gas. The additional gas begins to slowly build up, holding more and more heat. This is what causes global warming, which then causes the superstorms. Scientists have spent many years studying and researching climate change. These climate scientists know with much certainty that all recent, extreme weather events happening around the world are because the oceans are warmer, sea levels are higher, and the temperature is rising. The odds are that more devastating storms, such as Sandy and Haiyan, are increasing every year, and no one wants any more destructive storms. To reduce the makings of superstorms/prevent global warming, here are the best three things any human being can do: REUSE, REDUCE, and RECYCLE. Use reusable water bottles instead of plastic water bottles; buy products that have minimal or no packaging to reduce waste; and always recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass, and aluminum cans.

The Evolution of Sherlock Holmes

By Zoe Payne Fans of the hit TV show Sherlock will be waiting eagerly for the release of Season 3 (already available on BBC) in the United States. If you enjoy watching a Sherlock TV show, or movie, or perhaps reading a book about the character, you've probably wondered how the idea of Sherlock got to where it is today.

Sherlock Holmes has gone through many changes to reflect the times.

The original Sherlock Holmes adventures were by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He was a physician who had dreams of being a writer. Eventually, he wrote A Study in Scarlet and discovered the characters Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes--characters that became the basis of 56 short stories and four novels. Partway through these adventures, Doyle became tired of Sherlock Holmes. He wanted to get back to more serious writing. Doyle decided to kill the character. In The Final Problem, Sherlock and his arch-nemesis, Professor James Moriarty, grappled at the edge of the Reichenbach Falls before they fell to their doom. But the public was
19

upset with the characters death. Eventually, Doyle wrote The Hound of The Baskervilles but set it before Sherlocks fall. Two years later, he brought back Sherlock in The Adventure of the Empty House, where it is revealed that only Moriarty plunged off the falls. $$$ Sherlocks legacy was carried on. Numerous other authors have written books about Sherlock and Dr. Watson. Throughout these books (and movies and TV shows), several characters aside from Sherlock Holmes and John Watson often appear. These are Irene Adler, the clever woman who can match Sherlock Holmes; Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard; and James Moriarty, the main criminal. Many of these books are set after Sherlocks retirement, such as Ten Years Beyond Baker Street. Some have outlandish concepts, like Time For Sherlock Holmes, where Holmes and Watson create a drug that makes them immortal. A graphic novel titled Victorian Undead sets Sherlock against zombies. Some less unusual books are the Enola Holmes series, where the main character is Sherlocks supposed younger sister. The Boy Sherlock Holmes series by Shane Peacock is about young Sherlock. $$$ There are several movies about Sherlock, such as Sherlock Holmes in New York (1976), in which Moriarty has kidnapped Irene Adlers son. It was hinted that the boy is Sherlocks son as well. Another famous movie is Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) where Sherlock and John meet at a boarding school. At the end of the movie, there's foreshadowing when the villain escapes and checks into a hotel as James Moriarty. There is also the movie franchise Sherlock Holmes begun a few years ago starred by Robert Downey, Jr. These movies have Irene Adler and Moriarty in them. Several current TV shows

feature Sherlock and Dr. Watson. Not necessarily Dr. John Watson Elementary has a Dr. Joan Watson as Sherlock Holmes's sober companion. In this version, Sherlock is a recovering drug addict. Following Sherlock through his antics, Dr. Joan Watson becomes an apprentice to the detective. In Sherlock, John Watson is an army doctor who assists Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective. Set in modern-day London, this show often uses bits from the original Sherlock Holmes by Doyle. The name of the rst episode is A Study In Pink, like the rst original story, A Study In Scarlet. It also has Irene Adler, Moriarty, and Inspector Lestrade. Sherlock often uses technology to help him solve crimes. In A Study In Pink, a smartphone is used to track down a killer. Over the years, Sherlock has changed quite a bit. At the beginning of the Sherlock age, he was a professor-type character. Later, he became a bit more edgy and less scholarly. Recently, Sherlock has been portrayed as unconventional and eccentric as a recovering drug addict and a selfpronounced sociopath. Sherlock Holmes has been kept fresh and interesting through constant new depictions of the character to engage audiences of many generations.

Since theres been so many versions of Sherlock, they wanted to find a way to make it unique and incorporate modern technology to grasp the attention of this generation. -Christina Lee, 18 I think that the older [version of Sherlock Holmes] seemed cooler to me because it was more interesting. -Steffany Nguyen, 18
