Was/ Were
When the statement being made is about a situation in the past that actually occurred (not a hypothetical situation), then was is for singular subjects, and were is for plural.
"I was there." "They were not there." "We were there." "You and I were there."
Exception: even though the subject you is singular, you use were.
We use this tense when you want to talk about something at a definite time in the past: yesterday, last night, in 2006 etc.
The past simple of be is '' was 'or ''were'': the form depends on the subject as it is almost always the case
I was at the optician an hour ago. Now I am at home. Yesterday she was at the office.

To make negative sentences with the verb to be in this tense you have to use:
