There five different concepts that are the direct cause of RF signal loss. They are Absorption, Reflection, Scattering, Refraction and Diffraction. Absorption The concept of Absorption is the conversion of the RF signal energy into heat. This process happens because the molecules in the medium (metal, wood, concrete etc.) through which the RF signal is passing cannot move fast enough to keep up with RF waves. Here are a couple of examples: Concrete Wall, absorption rate will vary between 6-15dB. Metal, absorption rate will vary between 6-10dB. Dry Wall, absorption rate will very between 3-5dB.
