ENGINEERING MECHANICS MODEL EXAMINATION DATE: 09/02/14 1. A system of four forces acting on a body is shown in fig.1 below.

Determine the resultant force and its direction.

2. A car is pulled by two ropes as shown in figure. If the cable AB can withstand a maximum tension 3750 N, determine the tension in cable AC and its angle with horizontal , so that the resultant force 6000 N is directed along x- axis.

3. A force of magnitude 750 N is directed along AB is (0.8, 0, 1.2) and B is (1.4, 1.2, 0) m. Write the vector form of force. 4. Two spheres each of weight 500 N and of radius 100 mm rest in a horizontal channel of width 360 mm as shown in figure. Find the reactions on the points of contact A, B and C. Assume all the surfaces of contact are smooth.

5. A system of parallel forces is acting on a rigid bar as shown in fig. Reduce the system to (a) Single force (b) Single force and a couple at A (c) A single force and a couple at B

6. Find the reactions at the supports A and B of the beam shown in Fig.

7. Blocks (2) rests on block (1) and is attached by a horizontal rope AB to the wall as shown in figure. What force P is necessary to cause motion of block (1) to impend? The co-efficient of friction between the blocks is and between the floor and block (1) is 1/3. Mass of blocks (1) and (2) are 14 kg and 9 kg respectively.

8. Determine the centroid of the shaded area shown below.

9. Find the moment of inertia of plane area shown below in figure about its centroidal axes.

10. Two trains A and B leave the same station on parallel lines. The train A starts with an uniform acceleration of 1/6 m/s2 and attains a speed of 24 Km/hr, when the steam is reduced to keep the speed constant. The train B leaves 40 sec after, with uniform acceleration of 1/3 m/s2 to attain a maximum speed of 48Km/hr. When will the train B overtake the train A? 11. A particle is projected with an initial velocity of 60 m/s, at an angle of 75o with the horizontal. Determine, (i) the maximum height attained by the particle, (ii) horizontal range of particle, (iii) time taken by the particle to reach highest point, (iv) Time of flight. 12. Figure shows two blocks of weight 60 N and 140 N, placed on two inclined surfaces and connected by an inextensible string. Calculate the acceleration of the system and the tension in the string. Take = 0.2.
