The Super Lawyers Selection Process

With the goal of assembling a comprehensive, credible, and diverse listing of outstanding lawyers working across more than 70 practice areas, Super Lawyers is a rating service of exceptional lawyers who have garnered significant professional accomplishments and achieved a high level of peer recognition in their careers to date. Each year, a list of these leading attorneys is published in Super Lawyers Magazine, which reaches more than 13 million readers all across the country and is a valuable resource for fellow attorneys and consumers in search of legal counsel.

Super Lawyers are chosen through a rigorous, multi-phase, patented selection process which uses peer nominations and evaluations as well as independent third-party research. To be considered for Super Lawyer recognition, candidates are either formally nominated by a peer or may be identified as suitable contenders by Super Lawyers research staff.

After the candidate pool is created, the Super Lawyers research department evaluates and ranks each candidate using 12 criteria for professional achievement and peer recognition. These include such indicators as verdicts and settlements, representative clients, pro bono and community service records, and scholarly lectures and writings. Candidates are then reviewed by a blue ribbon panel of assembled peers, before being divided into four firm-size categories for the final selection process. Selections are made on a state-by-state basis, and no more than 5 percent of the total number of lawyers in each state are chosen.
