Marcus Valerius Martialis

Marcus Valerius Martials Born: March 1, 40 AD Died: Between 102 and 104 AD Occupation: Author During his life he lived in Rome for 33 years as a writer. After writing his first works he then debuted them at the Colosseum in 80 AD. His next two books, the Xenia and Apophoreta were written in 83 and 84 AD. He then issued his most famous books between 86 and 98 AD. Martial was the author of twelve books of epigrams, which depicted and comprises most of our modern knowledge of ancient Roman city life. The format of these writing were witty and from a spectators view which gave them the appeal to the Roman people of the time and modern historians now. These epigrams were written in elegiac couplets and were the basis for the modern epigram.
