LESSON PLAN: BRAINSTORMING AND READING Year Level: 11 Period/Lesson: Date: 5th March 2014 UNIT: Development of the

Geosphere Teacher: Mrs Clarissa Whiting :o) Length: 50 minutes

STUDENTS PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students previous knowledge does not need to be highlighted in this lesson, as this is a brainstorming activity and individual reading exercise. END OF LESSON GOALS: For students to feel a sense of achievement in regards to the volume of information they were able to collaborate in the brainstorming exercise. To have the relevant chapter read in entirety. RESOURCES REQUIRED FOR LESSON: Interactive White Board WB and textbooks CURRICULUM OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES: Understand the key features of Earth systems, how they are interrelated, and their collective 4.5 billion year history. Evaluate, with reference to empirical evidence, claims about the structure, interactions and evolution of Earth systems. 2 mins Quiet students quickly and instruct them to get their notes on the questions that I left them to ponder the last lesson. BODY OF LESSON: Time: 18 mins Teacher direction/ activity / instruction: Brainstorming the questions that were left with students to ponder after last lesson. 1. Are we, as humans speeding up or altering any elements of the rock cycle? If so how? 2. What effect will this have on us in the future? Student activity / what students are doing: Students to be sitting at desks actively participating in the discussion. Check understanding/ Resources: key questions/manage learning: Check to see that each Interactive student gives some White Board input into the discussion.

Use IWB to write down all students thoughts. These slides need to be uploaded onto the student drive so that each student has a copy to access. 28 mins Students to read the next Students at desks, reading chapter of the textbook about in silence. the different spheres of the Earth. Textbook

CONSOLIDATION: Time: 2 mins Teacher direction/ activity/ Student activity/ what instruction: students are doing: Let students know that we will be watching some You Tube clips that will sum up the layers of the Earth and the different spheres. Also starting a new topic on plate tectonics. Check understanding/ Resources: key questions/ manage learning:

Finish / summing up / link to the next lesson: Next lesson will be watching You Tube clips. Students will be required to to go to a different room. Assessment: No formal assessment to be set for this lesson.

Evaluation: Student: Outcomes met/ engaged/ on task/ learning How well did the students participate in the brainstorming activity? How in depth were their answers?
