Meagan OToole EDUC 357- Intro To ELL Basic Classroom Plan 1. What age level/subject area is the student?

James is a tenth grade student at St. Andrews High School Academy in Barcelona, Spain. The student is in my foreign language class. 2. Does gender make a difference? I believe that it really depends on the situation to determine if gender makes a difference. I think that it is important to make a lesson plan that is geared towards both genders and not specifically one because you will lose the attention of some students, especially in the older grades. 3. What cultural knowledge would be relevant? One thing that James should start to try to adjust to in school is the difference between the styles of teaching in Spain compared to the style of teaching in The United States. The style of teaching in Spain is a lot more laid back then in The United States. Also, the food in the cafeteria will probably have foods that James is not used to and there is not much variety but he does have the option to bring a bagged lunch. One more thing that James should know is that there might be more independent work then he is used to and how we will assess him. 4. Does the content knowledge need to change? I will definitely have to change some of my content in my lesson plans to try and help James understand as much material as he can. It is very hard as a foreign language teacher to teach a student a second language when he doesnt have a grip on the first language but I believe that James has the potential to succeed in my class. I will try and use more visuals than usual so James can understand the material using graphs, pictures, and diagrams. I will also try to relate the material to his culture back in the United States. 5. What are some ideas you have for differentiation? James has already been provided with a student translator and he has also been placed in an after-school program to help him get a better understanding of Basque. As for in my classroom, James seems to be struggling the most with directions and time management. I could change the directions into English or instruct his student translator to try to explain

what I want to be completed from the assignment. I could also give him visual cues. I dont want James to become dependent on the visuals so I would only use them when I think necessary or when I see James struggling the most. I would defiantly encourage James to share his culture with the class so we learn and he learns how to communicate with us. 6. What learning materials would be most effective? I think that visuals would really help James. I think that when using visuals he will begin to relate and connect what the pictures means to the sounds. I would want his student translator to speak in both English and Basque and then this will slowly allow James begin to understand the foreign language. I would want to make sure that James does not become too dependent on the visuals alone so I would like him to hear as well as see the visuals so he begins to relate the sounds to the visuals so when the visuals are not provided he will use his knowledge to do his best to understand directions. 7. Would you need to use different classroom management techniques? I would let James know how my classroom functions on a regular basis and see how well he can follow. James seems to be struggling the most with time management so I will try to give him extra time but also make sure that he doesnt fall behind in activities that follow. I will have to see how James interacts more in the classroom to get a better understanding of how he would respond to things both positive and negative so I can set him up to succeed in my classroom. 8. What are your learning expectations for the student? I believe that James has the potential to be very successful in my classroom, just like the rest of my students. I expect him to continue to work hard both in the classroom and outside the classroom to try and understand Basque as much as he can. I expect him to use all materials available to him to help him succeed. I will do everything that I can to help him succeed in my classroom but I do believe he has great potential. Lesson Plan: I want students to describe something about this country in the foregin language that we are learning about as best they can. For my ELL student, I want him to describe something about their country, The United States, but in Basque as best he can. I start by making a list of topics on the board by collaborating with the class. I want them to tell me what things they would be interested in describing. I will start the list off myself with a few topics such as food and sports. I want them to help me finish the list. Once the list is created, I will give students 10-15 minutes to write a paragraph about the

topic they have chose. After they have written their paragraph, I want them to provide a visual. They can create this visual any way they want. I will provide them with markers, scissors, and extra paper. I will leave extra time for sharing but not make it required for students to share if they are not comfortable speaking the language.
