Featured Printmaker Brumfields Gallery March 8 - May 3

Kicking off a new strand to their 2014 exhibition schedule, Brumfields Gallery introduces Ray Maseman as the Featured Printmaker. Maseman will be the first in a series of printmakers Brumfields Gallery will showcase in its lineup of exhibitions throughout the year. His prints are playful and bright, breathing whimsy into larger themes of human experience. Maseman likes to explore ideas using animal imagery, symbolically and as metaphor. The printmaker expresses individual experience as narrative with universal understanding. The protagonists depicted in these tableaus are heroes and voyagers, interacting with one another in ambiguous, yet familiar ways. The artist draws the viewer in with charming and fanciful scenes, encouraging us to connect with these characters in whatever ways we choose. The idea of play is another theme Maseman has heavily examined through his work. He writes, playing is the best way to really figure something out, and by poking, prodding, rearranging and experimenting I can make sense of a problem and come up with solutions to problems I didnt even know I was considering. He invites his audience to explore the scenarios he has created, delving into themes such as adulthood and personal exploration. Ray Maseman works out of the New Grounds Print Workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, exploring the development of non-toxic printmaking techniques. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking in 1992 from the University of Denver and has been exhibiting his prints ever since. His work has shown across the US, as well as internationally, including Japan, Canada, France, and Argentina. Ray Masemans prints will be on display at Brumfields Gallery beginning Saturday, March 8. The show coincides with an exhibition of paintings by Shannon Richardson.
