Why choose recreation as a minor/emphasis at WSU?

The Recreation program at Weber State University provides for students looking into careers in recreation with municipal programs, state government, military, therapeutic agencies, federal government programs, non-profit agencies, commercial/private businesses, etc. This is a great emphasis for students looking to work in travel/tourism, outdoor recreation, environmental education, outdoor business, or other allied fields. The recreation program is also an ideal complementary program to those majoring in child & family studies, criminal justice, health promotion, human performance, sociology, social work, and many other fields of study!

What will I learn in the program?

The recreation program at WSU has a strong experiential-learning orientation, and a significant emphasis on outdoor (adventure) recreation. Students in courses will have multiple mini-internship experiences, numerous site visits and guest speakers on the field. Students will participate in: hiking, rock climbing, cross country skiing, igloo building, yurt camping, caving, and more. There will also be more traditional class activities relating to recreation leadership, management, history, traditions, philosophy, planning, organizing and more.

Are there distance learning course offered?

There are currently no long distance classes offered through the recreation department. A large part of the curriculum is hands-on performance, both individually and in a group setting.

Is there an application deadline?

No. Individuals declaring Recreation as an emphasis with the Human Performance Management major will be required to complete a WSU Program of Study Declaration Form ad submit it to the HPHP Department Advisement Coordinator. Students choosing Recreation as a BIS emphasis need to contact the BIS office to schedule an orientation.

What are the starting salaries in these areas?

Entry-level recreation leaders can expect pay ranges similar to beginning school teachers ($25,000 - $30,000/ year) with some added experience (internship or otherwise.) A Recreation major or Masters degree (or National certification such a Certified Park & Recreation Professional CPRP) graduates can anticipate significantly higher salaries as performance and promotions allow.

What kinds of degrees are available?

At Weber State, an academic minor in Recreation is offered as well as a BIS emphasis. There is a Sports and Recreation Services emphasis area in the Human Performance Management major and several elective courses open to all students.
