PAT TERN
Royal Copenhagens distinctive uted pattern is a fundamental part of Denmarks cultural heritage. It is considered synonymous with Danish porcelain by connoisseurs all over the world. The very rst dinner service produced by Royal Copenhagen was the uted pattern, and for more than 200 years, this design has been well known and loved. The uted pattern illustrates a chrysanthemum; a symbol of vitality and timelessness.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS
Since 1775, the uted pattern has been the subject of an ongoing process of abstraction and creative thinking. It has been reinterpreted, rened and recreated; simplied, magnied and embellished. Each of these explorations has contributed to its current form, which represents the contemporary interpretation of old values.

BLUE IS THE COLOUR OF

love. Symbolising delity and secrecy, blue is a colour for which artists in the past would pay considerable sums. It is often the subject of writing. And it is also the colour in which the Royal Copenhagen expert painters excel. Blue has innumerable shades and nuances. The truest and purest blue, ultramarine, is used for decorating the classic Royal Copenhagen blue uted service. Thousands of years before this, from as far back as 2600 BC, Egyptian and various other civilisations used cobalt to create intensely blue colour for glassware, glazing and ceramics. COVETED THROUGHOUT HISTORY Before this, almost 7000 years ago, the Egyptians would crush the blue stone, Lapiz Lazuli into a ne powder to use as a pigment for eye shadow or murals on walls. Much later, medieval painters learned to use the stones colour to manufacture paint, attaining the colour ultramarine. The artists would buy the blue pigment and mix it in a solution of wax, oil, gum arabic and egg. The resulting substance could then be used as paint. Being expensive, it was used as a symbol of status. BLUE ON WHITE The 18th century was the pinnacle of blue painting in ceramics. At that time, European porcelain factories looked east to China for inspiration, as this is where porcelain-painting tradition had deep roots. Frantz Heinrich Mller, founder of Royal Copenhagen (then the Royal Porcelain Factory), was no exception. He imported a stylised chrysanthemum motif from China to Denmark where it was developed and rened into the ultramarine pattern we know today on the uted porcelain from Royal Copenhagen.

I have found it at last. This is the true blue. Oh, how light it makes one. Oh, it is as fresh as a breeze, as deep as a deep secret, as full as I say not what. With trembling hands she held the jar to her bosom Quoting old Lady Helenas exclamation upon being presented with a blue-painted Chinese jar.
The Young Man with the Carnation from Winters Tales by Isak Dinesen (the pen name of the Danish novelist Karen Blixen)

Vincent van Gogh and a number of other impressionists used synthetic ultramarine for many of their famous works.
THE BLUES OF AN ARTIST Throughout history, the colour blue has been an important means of expression. Some artists used blue to signify a surplus of resources and wealth, whereas others used the colour to express their feelings. Pablo Picasso, for example, went through a decidedly blue period. THE SIGNATURE OF A BLUE-PAINTER Blue is used in many of Royal Copenhagens decorations. Porcelain painting requires tremendous accuracy and concentration in a process that is both long and complicated. A blue-painter spends four years learning his craft. The delicate decoration is comparable to the painters own signature; at a glance the decorations may appear identical but each painter is able to immediately recognise their own and their colleagues work. In addition, all blue-painters put their own signature on the back of each and every porcelain item painted. Here these individual signatures join the three Royal Copenhagen waves, which represent the three Danish straits: the Oresund, the Great Belt and the Little Belt.

Royal Copenhagens blue colour is called Cobalt Zinc Silicate. The cobalt brings out the blue colour.
RESILIENT BLUE Cobalt blue is perfect for painting ceramics, as it is easy to work with and extremely colourfast during ring. In the early days of the company, Royal Copenhagen obtained their cobalt from Norwegian Blaafarvevrket (the blue colour works), a company which throughout the 19th century, was responsible for between 70 and 80 percent of all global cobalt production.

The decoration of a Blue Fluted Plain plate requires 1,197 brush strokes, and more still for the half- or full lace versions.

Blue is a colour of multiple meanings. It was the colour of Odins cloak and also represents the Indian gods Vishnu and Krishna. In China, blue symbolises an eastwards direction and in Denmark, it denotes the liberal political party.

BLUE FLUTED MEGA

Desig ned by Karen Kjldgrd-Larsen in 2000

Blue Fluted Mega is both comfortingly familiar and surprisingly refreshing. In this unusual reinterpretation of the blue uted pattern, selected details have been enlarged but are still painted by hand, preserving the original and unique vivid blue effect. The Blue Fluted Mega, created by the young design student Karen Kjldgrd-Larsen in 2000, signalled the beginning of a new adventure. The famous hand-painted pattern has become a household name again, expressing both its historical authenticity and creative, innovative thinking.

FLUTED SIGNATURE
Desig ned in 2007

The Royal Copenhagen factory stamp can be found underneath every individual piece of porcelain. In Fluted Signature, however, the stamp has been relocated to the surface and is immediately visible in an enlarged version.
Since the very beginning, the principles embodied in Royal Copenhagen porcelain are artistic skill, craftsmanship and innovation, creating uncompromised perfection. Exquisitely pleasing to the eye, and smooth to the touch, each piece tells its own story. Taking their point of departure from Royal Copenhagen traditions, many pieces make brave, new expressions through their functionality and design. THE SIGNATURE Since 1775, every single porcelain item has been marked underneath with the three distinctive wavy lines. Originally this mark was hand-painted and continued to be so for almost 100 years. In the 1870s, however, the company began to stamp its mark under the glazing, apart from the three waves. To this day, they are still painted by hand. Over time, the mark has undergone changes, but it is still possible to date every single porcelain item that has ever left Royal Copenhagen. The examples below illustrate some of the factorys marks, applied to porcelain with blue under-glazing decorations; the Christmas plates, the gurines and the blue dinner services.

THE ROYAL CROWN The royal crown symbolises the connection between the Danish Royal Family and Royal Copenhagen which has existed for more than two centuries. The cross decorating the crown, the Dagmarkors, is a jewelled crucix, discovered in 1683 and dating back to medieval times.

Painting by Juliane Marie can be seen at Rosenborg Castle

THE WAVES The three wave lines, representing Denmarks three main straits the Great Belt, the Little Belt and the Sound, are applied as the factory trademark, in accordance with Queen Juliane Maries original request.

BLACK FLUTED MEGA

Desig ned by Karen Kjeldgrd-Larsen in 2004

This dinner service is much more than just porcelain. It proves that even the most solid traditions can stand up to being challenged. What was once known and loved for being small and blue is now equally sought after in its expanded black version, and is highly collectable for design lovers. Black Fluted Mega breaks away from the traditional blue and white universe; the black brush strokes on the white porcelain embody a dramatic contrast that ts well into the contemporary home. Sophisticated, considered and just slightly rebellious.

THE FLUTED BASE

BLACK FLUTED
Elegant, rustic charm. Any good meal will seem even more appetising when served on Black Fluted; a dinner service that sets new standards for tasteful presentation. Its unique matt glazing emphasises the porcelains elegant uting in a quite different way from classic smooth glazing. The surface is raw yet still tactile, creating a minimalist and austere ceramic effect. The perfect choice for a stylishly rustic Nordic kitchen.

BLUE FLUTED
This new Royal Copenhagen service is simultaneously familiar and unusual. Blue Fluted is yin and yang, proof that opposites attract. It engenders a completely new expression, as the raw, matt glazing in regal blue meets and complements the classic uting. It is rustic, yet sophisticated; minimalist, yet expressive. Fresh and yet recognisable. Expected launch: Autumn 2014

LOUISE CAMPBELL is a pioneer in innovative, contemporary design and one of the worlds leading creative talents. She has won numerous awards for her design work and has worked for a number of international design companies. A leading light in the creative professions, she simply says that she is just doing things to the best of her ability. Meet the designer behind Royal Copenhagens popular dinnerware collection, Elements.

LOUISE - THE LEADING ELEMENT

A CONVERSATION ABOUT DESIGN IN GENER AL AND ROYAL COPENHAGEN IN PARTICUL AR

service. I created the service using my own form which was developed over a number of years, based on Royal Copenhagen values in terms of respect for the meal as well as contemporary eating habits.

Tranquebar is one of the Royal Copenhagen services that Louise remembers well from her childhood.

A designer as successful as Louise Campbell could be forgiven for having a whim or two, but nothing could be further from the truth. A downto-earth person with an extremely humble attitude, she simply loves her work. When asked which of her designs shes most proud of, the designer just smiles and says, You wouldnt ask a mother which of her kids is her favourite, would you? She is however, more willing to discuss some of the milestones in her design career so far. My design life, so far, has been a journey through a dramatic landscape. I admit I have experienced some real career highs, but I just carry on doing the best I can. Some of the highlights include being part of the development of Elements dinnerware for Royal Copenhagen, as well as my cooperation with Louis Poulsen. A completely different adventure, was designing a luxury chandelier for Baccarat, priced at 149,000 euro. I also remember having the keys to the Danish Ministry of Culture for an entire Christmas holiday, while I redesigned the ofce. I also once had the keys to Holmegaards glassworks. But the main thing is having

the opportunity to have such varied professional experiences. I really do have an extraordinary job, in a profession full of surprises. WEANED ON ROYAL COPENHAGEN Long before her collaboration with Royal Copenhagen, Louise knew and loved the brand. Like many other Danes, I grew up surrounded by Royal Copenhagen items. They were everywhere; on the table, in glass-front cabinets and on the walls. In fact, I inherited various pieces of Royal Copenhagen, including a Flora Danica plate which is in fact quite valuable. I also have some gurines and other pieces that I really value and cherish although some are chipped. I think in a way it makes them a bit more accessible. I distinctly remember two dinner services from my childhood. One was Royal Copenhagens Tranquebar used in our home which I loved and the other was the Blue Fluted Plain used at my best friends house. Her dad was director of Royal Copenhagen at the time and they had Blue Fluted Plain everywhere, which I thought was more exquisite than our Tranquebar.

AN ARTISTIC LOVE AFFAIR Since then, Louise Campbell has succeeded in making history together with Royal Copenhagen, with the introduction of the White and Multicoloured Elements in 2008. This marked Royal Copenhagens rst 21st-century launch of a complete new dinnerware service in new basic shapes. This was followed by Campbells next stroke of genius in 2011; Blue Elements. My collaboration with Royal Copenhagen actually began with a chance chat with Creative Director, Niels Bastrup. We talked about thermo jugs and urns. Over time, this developed into one of the most comprehensive assignments Ive had to date. she says. The best thing about this collaboration is our close working relationship. Over the years, I have really got to know some of the employees at the factory. This familiarity makes our work so much easier because we understand one another to the point where words are superuous. In fact, we have become so close that our working relationship have evolved and deepened.

HONOUR THE LEGACY To Campbell, the collaboration with Royal Copenhagen is unique. It is so different to anything Ive done before. My part in continuing the long and proud legacy has been a work of the utmost respect. My approach is respectful yet with a playfulness that updates the form, structure and decoration. To me, this assignment represents a combination of strength and frailty that can be compared with porcelain. On the one hand, the heritage has a resilience that is much more capable than one would immediately believe. On the other hand, this same heritage could dissolve if not carefully managed.

I would like Elements to give the impression that the uting, lace and paintwork have been poured like rich cream over the strict design.

EXHAUSTIVE METHOD When asked what good design involves, Louise Campbell answers without hesitation. To me, good design is when purpose, materials, shapes and manufacturing all work together. This is easier said than done and is very time consuming. A product will never really be good, unless the designer is given the opportunity to pursue a comprehensive, exhaustive work process. When I began working on Elements, I was given the use of a workplace in the moulding room of Royal Copenhagens factory. I also had unlimited access to everything I could nd in drawers or cupboards, in archives or laboratories. The rst three years was a kind of mutual apprenticeship between the factory and myself. And we may still surprise each another and ourselves in this collaboration. But when working with the series, we are on the same page basing on our shared approach that combines many layers of history with many layers of design and materials science. ELEMENTS IS FOR USE It goes without saying that the designer uses Elements for her own personal dinner service. In her studio, she drinks her coffee from a Blue Elements cup, and uses Multicoloured Elements to lay the table at home. As I get older, I take more pleasure in setting a harmonious table. That said, I love when people use my pieces in unusual ways. This was what the service was originally created for, to be used in exactly the way the user wants to. You wont get any strict orders from me as to how Elements should be used.

I cannot pick out a favourite dinner service. To me, Royal Copenhagen is all about the comprehensive collection.
IN HER RIGHT ELEMENT Campbell has a knack for reinterpretation and twisting familiar elements and manufacturing methods to create something new and unique. This skill was what created Elements. Elements is based on the gentle cherry picking three strokes of genius in Royal Copenhagens history: the soft, yet elegant structure of the Fluted service; the unique Flora Danica lace rim; and the Blue Fluted motif, which was imported from abroad and sympathetically re-appropriated particularly by Arnold Krog. This means that there is a kind of shared ownership of the

For Elements, Louise Campbells point of departure was the soft, elegant structure of the Fluted service, Flora Danicas unique lace rim and the motif from Blue Fluted Plain.

Piece by piece, I explored how far I could move away from predetermined functions, which has led to a lovely mixture of high-handled cups (which many consider to be a permanent part of Royal Copenhagen), jugs without handles, a bowl for anything from soup to sugar, and plates for lobster as well as spaghetti bolognese. I wanted to adhere to the classic virtues so allowed myself the pleasure of subtly elaborating; quite uncommon in the modern design world: to truly play with every millimeter, creating little surprises for your hands and eyes. I hope that every owner of a piece of Elements porcelain will continue to nd new details.

I have recently become a collector of old Royal Copenhagen pieces, in particular the elaborate Blue Fluted Plain items they are such exquisite dance partners for Elements.

COPENHAGEN

AN (EXTRA)ORDINARY URBAN LIFE

Clean, green, bustling, relaxed. The Venice of the North, the city of cities. Surrounded by water and exemplifying everything needed for a happy lifestyle, if you ask the rest of the world and Copenhageners. Because when Copenhagen was singled out as the worlds most livable city, they couldnt agree more.*

60

61

Copenhagen is a city for living. It is not just a place for work and sleep. It is a city with a zest for life and experiences, where you can dream and act out those dreams, ambitions and desires. There is room for experimentation, for the inclusion of different cultures, for grandeur and for intimacy. It is a city of harbour swimming, bicycles, creative environments, green breathing spaces, appealing architecture and amazing Nordic design. A CITY ALIVE Copenhagen has a strong pulse and is alive and breathing all year round. Copenhageners make use of their city, using the urban spaces, the squares, streets, parks, harbour area, playgrounds and pavement cafes. The city may have a laid-back vibe but it is vibrant, full of life and energy. And never more than in the Danish summer when the city blooms like a green oasis and creative places and spaces thrive, becoming sources of inspiration to Copenhageners and tourists alike.

WATERFULL COPENHAGEN Water ows freely through all the citys old canals and lakes. You are never be more than 15 minutes away from the waterfront.

THE BATHING CITY When the sun is shining and you feel like taking a quick dip, you never have to go far even in the city centre. Copenhagen is located by the sea and has a wealth of old canals, lakes, beaches and clean harbour baths. In the summertime, Copenhageners relax on beaches and at beach bars. They swim in the clean water of the harbour baths and kayak on the citys canals. Even in the winter months, brave swimmers can take a dip in the chilly harbour water.

BEST CITY IN THE WORLD The architecture, the harbour, the bikes and the social urban life are some of the reasons why Copenhageners nd their city the best place to live in the world.

Copenhageners meet in the citys parks. A chat and a smile are part of this uniquely Danish quality of life.

Collectively, Copenhageners cover a daily distance of 1.21 million km using 346 km of bicycle lanes, 23 km of bike tracks and 43 km of the green cycling routes available in Copenhagen. This corresponds to two brisk trips to the moon and back**.
BIKES IN THE CITY Copenhagen is renowned for its bicycle culture. Danes love to cycle and city planners have been extremely accommodating to cyclists. All bicycle lanes are in good repair, the green bicycle routes are excellent and there is an abundance of bicycle stands. Copenhageners cycle all year round but never more so than in the summer.

Copenhagen is a green capital with clean water, sustainable hotels, organic food and cycling. The city aims to be the worlds rst CO2 -neutral capital by 2025.

THIS IS WHERE HAPPINESS IS Denmark has taken the top spot as the place in the world where it is easiest to be happy.***

There are cosy cafes, traditional pubs, restaurants, wine bars and hip microbreweries across the city. From early spring to autumn when the last leaves have fallen, Copenhageners make the most of caf culture and outside spaces.

Desig ned by Ar nold Krog in 1888 The turn of the 19th century was a period of evolution and growth in terms of Royal Copenhagen dinnerware. The artistic director at that time redesigned the blue uted pattern and introduced a number of new additions including the White Fluted Half Lace. The Fluted design was given an elegant lace demi-border, creating a romantic service.

WEDDING

TRADITIONS, OLD AND NEW...

A wedding is one of lifes greatest occasions. Tears, smiles, joy and laughter are all experienced in this celebration of love and commitment. Like many celebrations, it is steeped in cultural traditions and rituals. Wish lists, gifts and tokens all have a part to play on the big day. Many are associated with luck, bestowing good fortune and blessings on the couple and for ensuring happily ever after. It may be superstitious but we often follow traditions on these occasions; there is something reassuring about adhering to the practices of previous generations. Western tradition dictates that the groom must not see the brides wedding gown before the wedding. The throwing of rice at the bride and groom is symbolic of all the guests wishing the couple a lifetime of fertility and prosperity. Even the cake has its layers of meaning; cutting it together is the rst task the newlyweds perform as a pair and feeding each other cake symbolizes their commitment to provide for one another. OLD AND NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE! One of the best known traditions originates from England and involves the bride wearing something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue on the day of the wedding. The new clothes represent good fortune and success as she steps into a new world. However, she must also wear something old to represent all the good things in her old life. The something
When the couple has danced their rst dance, the bridal veil will be torn apart. The greater the destruction, the greater her happiness in married life. It is also important for the guests to secure a piece of the veil to take home, as this is said to bring happiness.

borrowed usually comes from a happily married woman, in the hope that the item will give the bride some of the joy. Last but not least, the something blue. Blue is the colour of love, and this item symbolises love, delity and purity; it is usually a blue garter.

The blue colour symbolises love, delity and constancy.

ONE BOUQUET, SEVERAL TRADITIONS There are several traditions associated with the wedding bouquet, one of the most popular is the tossing of the owers into a throng of unmarried girls attending the celebration. According to superstition, the lucky recipient who catches the bouquet will be next in line to be married. Some say that this ritual stems from an even earlier superstition, when women used to try to rip pieces of the brides dress and owers in order to obtain some of her good luck. As a decoy to escape the crowd, the bride would toss her bouquet and run away.

Choose the owers of the season when decorating the table. If the table is laid with decorated porcelain, use white napkins. This will ensure an elegant and simple effect, even if the owers of the season are colourful.

WEDDING

...BORROWED AND BLUE

GIFTS OF LOVE AND BEAUTY The newly-wed couple receives a bounty of gifts; not only the gift of marriage but also many lovely presents to start them off on their new life together. In days gone by, the brides parents provided a dowry, while the parents of the groom were also expected to supply a bride price to her parents. Nowadays, thankfully, the idea of gift-giving at weddings is considered a pleasure by most guests. WISHES AND DREAMS The happy couple sometimes prepares their wedding wish list together, part of planning their shared future. These days, wedding lists can be registered at department stores and shops; we are proud that the Royal Copenhagen Flagship stores are a popular choice for bridal registries. We offer inspiration and advice from table settings for the event to creating a personalised dinner service.

When a couple gets married, the present that would truly honour the occasion would be precious, practical and with some sense of history and meaning.

DINNER IS SERVED There are as many ways to set a wedding table as there are couples to wed. A table at a more formal event may be set with a white table cloth, pastel-coloured owers and a classic porcelain dinner service, such as Blue Fluted Plain by Royal Copenhagen. A relaxed affair, however, could be colourful, mixing and matching different dinner services to achieve a unique look. Often, certain colours become a theme, matching the brides outt or the owers chosen for the event.

A Royal Copenhagen dinner service is a gift for a lifetime; beautiful, useful and the start of new traditions.

A bridal couple receives a wealth of presents. For this reason, many couples choose to make a list of what they received from whom to make sure that they will remember afterwards. This has not yet become a tradition; it is simply a very practical measure

FLOR A DANICA

FLOR A DANICA

ETERNALLY EXCLUSIVE
Desig ned by Johan Chr istoph Bayer in 1790

Flora Danica is one of the worlds most prestigious and luxurious porcelain dinner sets.

LUXURY LIVES ON...

Dating from porcelains golden age of the 18th century, Flora Danica is one of the worlds most prestigious and precious dinner services in production today.
...IN DINNERWARE FIT FOR ROYALTY

Flora Danicas origins were royal from birth. It was commissioned by the Danish king, Christian the VII and intended as a gift for the Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, an enthusiastic collector of porcelain.

The long and laborious process commenced in 1790 and was not nished until 12 years and 1,802 different pieces of hand-moulded and hand-painted porcelain later. To this very day Flora Danica is still moulded and painted by hand as it was more than 200 years ago.
1,503 PIECES HAVE SURVIVED The remaining part of this service still graces the royal table of Queen Margrethe II on state occasions at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
A STUDY OF OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS

At that time porcelain was an extremely precious commodity, considered white gold. Ultimately, the service remained in Denmark and became the heritage of Danish kings. Flora Danica was rst used at a birthday banquet for the king himself in 1803. Ever since, this royal service has been used only on ceremonial occasions, including royal birthdays and weddings, visits by foreign monarchs and banquets held for the opening of the High Court and the investiture of knights.
A BOTANICAL MARVEL BY JOHANN CHRISTOPH BAYER

Flora Danica is as admired today as when it was rst produced, although culture and taste have changed a great deal since then. Flora Danica speaks to us across the ages. One never tires of studying the service, as each and every piece is decorated with an individual and highly articulated plant complete with ower, leaves, stem, root and fruit.
THE GIFT OF THE DANISH PEOPLE

Acclaimed porcelain painter, Johann Christoph Bayer took on the immense task of creating the Flora Danica service, a job that became his lifes work. With distinctive and sensitive brush strokes, he copied the copperplates of over 700 Nordic wild plants taken from the Flora Danica encyclopedia and painstakingly hand-painted them onto the precious porcelain.

When Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his ance, Miss Mary Donaldson were married on May 14th, 2004, the gift from the Danish people was a Flora Danica dinner service bearing the young couple's new monogram, designed by the mother of the Crown Prince, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Created by Dutch oral artist, Wouter Dolk, the sophisticated hand painting technique used makes the vase appear so realistic, you can almost smell the fresh scent of newly gathered hydrangeas.

A POETIC REMINDER

SPRING COLLECTION
Butteries, owers and birds. Decorated in delicate colours on pure white porcelain, Royal Copenhagen Easter decorations are welcome signs of spring. The rst Easter egg with a oral motif was inspired by the coveted Flora Danica service, based on true-to-life botanical drawings of Danish owers and plants. Fresh and eternally optimistic, these Easter eggs are a gift to be treasured.
