Mayors Message
It is my pleasure, on behalf of Uxbridge Township Council and Staff, to present our Spring/Summer 2014 Community Guide. As spring approaches, it brings with it many exciting opportunities to experience all sorts of wonderful recreational activities. Visit our trails and experience the wonder of nature coming alive after a winter sleep. We are very excited about the wide variety of programs that we are presenting to the public. We encourage you to get out and enjoy the activities in the community. It is a wonderful way to become involved in everything that Uxbridge has to offer, as well as meet new people. I would like to thank the many volunteers who, through their tireless efforts and dedication to our community, are a major reason Uxbridge has such a broad array of well-run and progressive programs.

Fitness Programs at Uxpool

Uxbridge Full Circle Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu is a practical martial art that is a mix of Judo Throws, Karate Strikes, Aikido Joint Locks & Pressure points, as well as groundfighting techniques. Those that are familiar with watching MMA fights on TV will recognize many of these moves. Jiu-Jitsu is based on using an attackers weight and strength against them. Therefore, a small person, male or female, with Jiu-Jitsu experience can overcome a much larger attacker, making it a very effective form of self-defense in what could be a dangerous situation. Classes for Men and Women Age 14+ take place on Monday and Wednesday nights from 8:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at the Uxpool. Monthly fee - $70.00. Stop by or call Rob Sparkes (905) 862-3407.

Heritage Uxbridge
Heritage Uxbridge is a committee commissioned by the Council of the Township of Uxbridge to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation of heritage properties in the Township. The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who carry out a number of on-going responsibilities throughout the year, working with the community and the Township members, assisting with and advising in matters related to heritage and cultural aspects. In past years, the committee has developed and organized guided tours, and published articles and maps that help promote Uxbridges cultural heritage. The committee also produced a Heritage District Sign By-law to help promote a heritage look in the downtown district, and continues to recognize individual homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. An award called the Heritage Appreciation Award was established by the committee to recognize those individuals for taking the initiative and action to preserve our past. Three recipients - Strawberry Threads, Rutledge Jewellers and the Tin Mill - have received this award. In 2013, the committee acknowledged and recognized Blackburn Farms, a 6th generation farm in our Township. This year we will continue to award local area Heritage Farms. The Heritage Sign By-law Guidelines are used as a reference to determine award recipients, and the boundaries include the entire Township. Information about how to receive this award, along with

ideas on improving building facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance, can be found in the Heritage Uxbridge Sign Guidelines at the Townships office. In 2012, the community of Leaskdale and the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society proudly saw its original Presbyterian church, known mainly for its connection to Lucy Maud, receive a Provincial Heritage designation. If you would like more information about this committee or have any questions about Heritage Uxbridge, please contact: Pat Mikuse at prmikuse@sympatico.ca or Robin Coombs at rcoombs@powergate.ca

Heritage Site: Foster Memorial

The Thomas Foster Memorial

The Thomas Foster Memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill in the countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal, which is just outside of Agra, India, inspired its structure. The roof surfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery and all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work of the late Yvonne Williams, and are hand-painted, fired and leaded glass. The colour and designs are harmonious, and are distributed so that the interior is flooded with soft, colourful light. The 22 karat gold mosaics also display a multitude of colours, and lend an elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are made up of richly coloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, filled with symbolic designs. Upon entering, one crosses the "River of Oaths", on which float water lilies and lily pads. The design of the floor beneath the great dome suggests motion (which, in turn, symbolizes life), and this motion radiates from the Greek letters for Alpha and Omega. These, in turn, flank the Chi Rho monogram, which is displayed in an early Byzantine form. The laurel wreath of victory over death encircles the centre motif. The bottom of the dome is pierced with 12 stained glass, leaded windows - one in the east contains a gold cross on a rich blue background. Circling the lower part of the dome is the inscription "Take this my body for it is done and I have gained a new life, glorious and eternal"

ROAD WATCH
What is Road Watch? A new community initiative designed to improve road safety by creating greater awareness and giving residents an opportunity to participate in identifying and reporting dangerous and aggressive driving in the Township of Uxbridge. Why have Road Watch? To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries and fatalities in the Township of Uxbridge. What is Aggressive Driving? Aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failure to stop and any other unsafe driving that puts others at high risk for collision or injury. How does Road Watch work? Citizen Report Forms may be used any time you observe an act of aggressive driving. Record as much information as you can about the particular aggressive driving incident that you witnessed. This information will help the police in monitoring high risk areas in our community. To complete the report, include the license number, the make and colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) and the nature of the incident. When you send in the report, it is important that you sign it. This helps safeguard the system against abuse. Be assured that your personal information is for statistical use only and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported will receive a letter from the police, describing the unsafe or aggressive driving incident that was witnessed. If a driver is reported more than once, the police will make personal contact with that individual regarding the reported problems in person or by telephone. Subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the police depending on the severity of the incident. Remember, this is your opportunity to make our roads safer the same roads you use everyday. Citizen Report Forms may be picked up at any of the following drop box sites: Canadian Tire Fast Eddies Diner Anninas Bake shop & Cafe Joy Village Market Shell Coppins Corners Contact us: L.C.B.O Uxbridge Roadwatch@town.uxbridge.on.ca Leaskdale Country Store 905-852-9181 ext.298 Motor Licensing Office Incidents of an urgent nature Quaker Village Variety Store should be reported to the police Sandford General Store immediately by dialing 911. Bag in Box wine can be stored unopened for up to 6 months, and the beauty is that the inner bag collapses around the wine, preventing oxygen from negatively affecting the wine. Boxed wine is incredibly space efficient, so great for taking to your RV, trailer, cottage, boat, around the pool in summer, or for special events. Each 4 litre box contains 28 glasses of wine. IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE UXBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT

As of December, 2013, the Provincial Government passed Bill #18, which makes carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in all Ontario homes with fuel burning appliances indoors. The Fire Code will be changed to reflect this Bill in the spring of 2014. The Uxbridge Fire Department responds to a number of Carbon Monoxide Alarms throughout the Township per year. Our records indicate that the possible causes of these alarms can be attributed to: Vehicles left running in the garage or in the driveway with the garage door and/or the doorway from the garage to the residence open or ajar. Faulty or damaged door sweeps and/or weather stripping, allowing Carbon Monoxide to enter the home. A detector that has exceeded the manufacturer replacement date Faulty gas burning appliance and/or blocked appliance vent Note: When using a generator during a power outage, please make sure the unit is outside and away from windows and doors so exhaust doesnt enter the home. To ensure a safe environment for you and your family we suggest that you take extreme care and refrain from idling a vehicle in the garage or driveway for an extended period of time. The Fire Department also recommends that you inspect the door sweep and weather stripping around the door from the garage to your home and replace any damaged materials. In doing so, this will assist in preventing this dangerous invisible and odorless gas from entering your home. Check Appliance vents. Also check manufacturers replacement date and replace as recommended.

If you have any questions please contact F.P.O. Ken Maynard at (905) 852-3393.
