INTRODUCTION

Mechanical workshop, N.E Railway Gorakhpur is a leading industrial; unit in the field of periodical overhaul of rolling stock. This workshop was established in 1903 and was named as Bengal and Assam North west Railway LOCO and carriage board gauge coaches were also taken up. The workshop is spread over in an area 29.8 hectare out of which covered space is 12.6 hectares (42.8%).

HISTORY

The history of rail transport in India began in the midnineteenth century. In 1849, there was not a single kilometre of railway line in India. The Allahabad-Jabalpur branch line of the East Indian Railway had been opened in June 1867.

BRAKE SYSTEM

Brakes hence almost importance in a moving body. Brakes are the device, which are basically Used to control the machine part. During this control the brakes either stop the moving part or decreases. It is speed or maintains the uniform or state of rest by working against the forces or couples working over the machine part.

VACCUM BRAKE
An engine creates the vacuum, which is transferred to the Bogies by hose pipe. Proper vacuum is maintained through the system. If the vacuum pressure exceeds from the prescribed limit, the brakes are applied.

AIR BRAKES
The air brake is the standard, fail-safe, train brake used by railways all over the world. It is based on the simple physical properties of compressed air. So here is a simplified description of the air brake system.
