EDUC 630 LESSON PLAN 1

PREPARATION Teacher Name: Celeste Wegner Concept to be taught: Computer Basics What is a Computer? Subject/Grade level: Computer Science/Grade 2

Primary SOL (NETS): Basic Operations and Concepts; Social, ethical, and human issues 1.2 The student will name common technology found in homes. 2.0 The student will identify common uses of information and communication technology in the community and in daily life. Description of Class: o Number of students Eighteen (18) o Students and codes: visual learners (V) = 8, auditory learners (A) = 3, kinesthetic learners (K) = 7, above average (aa)=4 , average (a) = 10, below average.(ba) = 4, African Americans (AA) = 2, Caucasian (C) = 10, Hispanic(H) = 3 , Asian (AS) = 3, identified LD (LD) = 2 Hearing and Speech Disorder Students and 4 ADHD Students Room arrangements: The computer desks are facing the interactive white board. The teachers desk is located behind the last row of computers and is facing the interactive white board. A file cabinet and trash can are located beside the teachers desk. The overhead projector is mounted from the ceiling. Objectives: Given instruction on what a computer is, the student will be able to name three things that are computers and how they are used in daily life. Materials/Equipment: Computer, overhead projector, paper, pencil, and internet access. Technology Integration: For this lesson students will watch a brief video on computers via the internet. The students will have an opportunity to look at a computer and touch it. Risk Analysis: Students computer may encounter network or hardware issues preventing them from viewing the video. The internet may go down causing students not to connect

to the video. The teacher will have the downloaded video on her computer to present to the whole class if the student computers or internet have issues with functioning properly. Character Principle: Respect Romans 12:10 says Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves(NIV). God wants us to respect each other. He created each of us to be unique. As we study computers we will learn not everyone uses the same brand or type of computer. We should respect their choice whether we agree with it or not.

PROCEDURES Set: The students will be oriented to instruction by asking How many of you have computers at home?. It is important for the teacher to discuss what a computer is. The teacher will prepare pictures of computers to familiarize the students with computers.

Teacher Directed instruction: The teacher will gather the students in the computer lab. The teacher will introduce the computer with a 2 minute video on computers. The teacher will define computer. The teacher will explain that some things we see every day are computers. The teacher will introduce the various computers to the class. By engaging the student(s), they will develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for the computers in the computer lab. Guided Practice: #1 In order to help the students identify computers, it will be helpful for them to see pictures of them. Talk about what a computer is and how we use them in daily life. On a sheet of paper students will draw a picture of a computer. (whole class or small groups) #2 Students will complete a worksheet or interactive white board activity with varying pictures. This activity will allow students to select pictures that are computers and group them together. (whole class, individual or small groups) #3 The students will use the internet or the library to research computers. (individual or small groups) #4 The students will use construction paper to make a computer. (individual or small groups)

#5 The students will interview someone to find out what kind of computer they use and how they use it. (individual or small groups)

Closure: o Summative assessment: I will gather the students to an open space in the computer lab with paper and pencils and ask them to write down three things that are computers and how they would use them in their life. For those students who prefer to verbally express their thought, they will be given the opportunity to share with the class by presenting their research on computers. It is important for the teacher to guide the students and provide assistance when necessary. There should still be a prepared time for those students who prefer to verbally share what they have learned to do so.
