I Am Me Unit Plan

Lesson One Title: School Counselor: Date: Audience: Time Allotted: ASCA Student Standards: Behavioral/Learning Objectives: I Am Me D. Lamb 1/7/14 Sixth Grade Girls (Small Group) 45 minutes (can be modified) Academic Development: A:A1, B1.4 Personal/Social Development: PS:A1, PS:A2, PS:B1,PS:C1 Students will 1. Define self-esteem and body confidence in a way that applies to their lives. 2.Build relationships with group members that will begin to foster friendships and self-esteem. 3.Recognize the importance of self-esteem and body confidence in their overall well being. Group Work (large group discussion), Handouts, Assessment Assessment, Rules Worksheet, Walk the Line Activity Sheet, Self Esteem Supports Worksheet, Journals, I Am Me, homework sheets, news articles for parents Introduction and Assessment Introduce the group and individual members. Discuss the assessment and provide it for students to complete. Group Discussion Together as a group, members will establish the group rules for the group sessions. Activity Students will participate in a group activity to get to know each other. Walk the line consists of students stepping up to a line (or standing up) when a statement is read that applies to them. Instruction Defining Self-Esteem and Body Confidence. Put it in everyday terms that students can understand, apply and memorize. Self-Esteem Supports worksheet guides the learning. Wrap Up Hand out journals have them decorate journals as they wish. Homework sheets and I Am Me worksheet for guided journal reflection.Provide news articles for students to give to parents. Process Data: Out of the students that were polled, students responded that self esteem issues were their top concern. That is % of sixth through eighth graders. This is the first time that this group lesson has been so perception and outcome data have yet to be determined. The group has been selected based on the conflict resolution responses from students stating family issues was their top concern. Pre and Post assessments will be given to students to evaluate efficiency of program.

Lamb 2/3/14 Sixth Grade Girls (Small Group) 45 minutes (can be modified) Academic Development: A:A1, B1.4 Personal/Social Development: PS:A1, PS:A2, PS:B1,PS:C1 Students will 1. Learn effective communication skills apply them to their daily interactions with family and friends. 2. Discuss how messages can impact our self-esteem and body confidence. Discuss the consequences of social media bullying. 3. Apply the lessons to their daily lives. Movie clips, Group Discussion, Handouts, Art Computer, Dove films, Handouts, Magazines, Self-Esteem handouts pg 16-32 Review Discuss previous lesson, how they incorporated it into their life, any feedback/observations, questions, comments, concerns. Activity and Discussion Watch Dove Films. Discuss what messages are we hearing from family, friends, media? Ourselves? Provide handout (prompt 2) to aid discussion. Group Art Activity Use magazines to have them look at messages they are receiving when looking at the adds. Students are able to cut out and place on a piece of paper to create a collage of the messages they see. While working on this, discuss the consequences of bullying and social media. Homework Provide Self-Esteem worksheet pages 16-32 for guided journal reflection. Provide news articles for parents.

Lamb 2/3/14 Sixth Grade Girls (Small Group) 45 minutes (can be modified) Academic Development: A:A1, B1.4 Personal/Social Development: PS:A1, PS:A2, PS:B1,PS:C1 Students will 1. Learn how others and our words effect our self esteem. 2. Learn the impact that our words have on others and ourselves. 3. Recognize that we have control over how we feel about ourselves and how we view ourselves. Group Discussion, Activities, Songs Buckets, Unfinished Words handout, Computer, Firework song, news articles for parents Review: Discuss previous lesson, how they incorporated it into their life, any feedback/observations, questions, comments, concerns. Group Discussion: Discuss how others and our words effect our self-esteem. Activity: Hand out a bucket to each student and Unfinished sentences sheets for students. Have each student go around and place an unfinished sentence in each group members bucket. Group Discussion: Discuss their reactions and feelings about the activity. Discuss how the impact of words made them feel. Apply it to their lives. Activity: Hand out lyrics to Firework. Listen to the song, read the lyrics and then listen to the song again. Wrap Up: Journal reactions of lesson hand out news articles for parents. Process Data:

Lamb 2/3/2014 Sixth Grade Girls (Small Group) 45 minutes (can be modified) Academic Development: A:A1, B1.4 Personal/Social Development: PS:A1, PS:A2, PS:B1,PS:C1 Students will 1.Recognize what makes them who they are and being comfortable with that. 2. Discover likes and dislikes and appreciate others for theirs. 3. Recognize and discuss what their strengths and weaknesses are and how we can turn weaknesses into positives. Group Discussion, Art Handout, Group and Individual Activity Handouts, Construction Paper, Markers, Paper for Letters, Pens/Pencil Review: Discuss previous lesson, how they incorporated it into their life, any feedback/observations, questions, comments, concerns. Group Discussion: Discuss Who Are You based on the Self Esteem worksheets pg. 52-70. Activity: Draw a picture of self. On the inside of the person, write descriptive comments about self. As a group, go around and write descriptive words of the person on the outside. Discuss how that makes them feel. Group Discussion: Discuss likes and dislikes and the power to be yourself. Activity Have students write a letter to their future self about what they want for life. Wrap Up: Journal based on Self Esteem worksheets (52-70, 101-151) articles for parents

Learn the difference between positive, negative, and neutral coping strategies. 2. Recognize when they are feeling strong emotions 3. Apply the positive coping strategies when they are needed. Group Discussion, Group Activity, Post Assessment Sports Equipment, Post-Assessment Review: Discuss previous lesson, how they incorporated it into their life, any feedback/observations, questions, comments, concerns. Group Discussion: Discuss making good decisions on food, exercise, clothes and relationships and how it plays into building self-esteem and confidence. Discuss what a healthy lifestyle looks like. Activity: Outdoor/Indoor activity Wrap Up: Discuss the overall feelings of group and what they learned. Take postassessment.
