Introduction The purpose of this method is to provide a fresh musical source for beginning and intermediate-level four-mallet players. This is not just a technical book, but rather a musical resource designed to help the student to master both, technical and musical concepts related to fourmallet marimba playing. Each piece is focused on one technical concept related to four-mallet performance, in connection to other performance demands such as the realization of written dynamics, musical phasing, rhythm and above all, musical interpretation.1 In order to become proficient in the art of four-mallet marimba playing, we must understand and work diligently to master several basic technical concepts and primary motions applicable to four-mallet marimba performance. The names of these are: a- Double Vertical Strokes b- Double Lateral Strokes - Outside /Inside c- Single Independent Strokes d- Single Alternating Strokes Each one of these motions will be studied individually first and then applied to a musical situation. Besides the pieces written for each one of these motions, there are a series of exercises designed to help the student master each one of these four motions. We will discuss other important topics related to four mallets playing such as interval shifts, hand and body posture, footwork, choral playing and practice routines.

It would take many years of steady and diligent practice in order to achieve a mature sound with all these different types of motions. We all have heard the old adage, patience and hard work conquers all. Hopefully, the exercises that I include here are aimed at cutting some of that process time through a masterful array of textures that can be applied to the music. Enclosed you will find an audio recording of each solo which can be used as a reference. The following diagram shows the sticking number system used by the author in this book.

All of the technical concepts discussed in this method are related to the Stevens grip. Although some of them can be applied to other grips, the author recommends consulting other methods such as Gary Burtons Four Mallet Studies or to Mitchell Peters Fundamental Method for Mallets Book 1, for more information on the Burton and traditional grip.

All the concepts discussed in this book require on the spot demonstration and correction of faults and bad habits in LEFT order to ensure that they are HAND learned and executed correctly. I cannot stress enough the importance of consulting and seeking the help of a professional percussion instructor as the student applies the concepts and advice of this method. Therefore, the following guidelines are offered as a starting point: 1- Keyboard percussion technique is based on wrist stroke. 2- The arms move the hands on the horizontal plane across the keyboard. They may be use later vertically for accents and for loud volume playing, but only after the wrist stroke is fully developed. 3- The lower body takes care of adjusting the angle of the upper torso to the keyboard. 4- Keep your feet shoulder width apart and move them side to side with the instrument. Avoid taking too many steps as you move through the range of the instrument. Always stand in the middle of the range in which youre playing.

5- Although the wrist is capable of making horizontal movements, the primary wrist movement is the up and down motion of striking the mallets on the bars.

6- The fingers facilitate interval changes. 7- Keep the arms, hand and fingers relaxed regardless of the length of the interval.

8- Strike the naturals bars just off center towards the accidentals bars and strike the accidentals bars on the edge. Accidentals can be played off center too.

Section II - The Stevens Grip Conceived by the world renowned marimba player Leigh Howard Stevens, this grip differs from the traditional and Burton grip in that the shafts do not cross and the mallets are independently controlled and manipulated. Also in the Stevens grip the hands are positioned with thumb facing up and not to the side like in the traditional and Burton grip. 1- The grip is established by pulling the inside mallet out to a point where it is held only by the thumb and index finger (this is the pivot point) and supported by the middle finger. (Ex.1) 2- The middle finger functions as an anchor point on the shafts of the mallets when they are manipulated.

3- The outside mallet is inserted between the middle and ring finger and alongside the palm of the hand. The little and ring finger grab the shaft of the mallets and close firmly into the palm of the hand. (Ex.2) 4- The correct playing position consists of placing the hands with the thumbnails pointing to the ceiling and the mallet head parallel to the bars. (Ex.3). Example 4 illustrates the correct playing position for large intervals.

4 3

The double vertical strokes consist of playing two notes simultaneously with the same hand as in example 5.3

Contrary to the other strokes, the double vertical strokes utilize a basic up-and-down wrist motion similar to the same one we used on the snare drum. Beginners and intermediate students should be careful not to use the arms, or to let the hand move stealthily too high above the instrument. The hands should be one or two inches above the bars. For those of you not familiar with this up and down wrist motion, the idea here is similar to the one we used when bouncing a basketball. The stroke must initiate from an up position (the mallets should be approximately 8 inches away from the bars) and then move down. Once the mallets strike the bars it should return immediately to the up position. The student must remember to keep a relaxed posture throughout. The beginner student should use the floor exercises on the next page to practice the double vertical stroke motion. The idea of practicing on the floor will help the student to concentrate on getting the correct stroke without having to worry about playing the right notes! This concept will be used throughout the book with all the other strokes.

Be careful not to get a flam sound. If this happens check your grip. Perhaps the mallets arent hanging evenly.

Double Vertical Strokes: Floor Exercises Sitting down on the floor (rest your back on the wall to assure proper posture) practice these exercises with a metronome starting at = 50. Repeat each exercise at least 5 times.

Once the student feels comfortable with the floor exercises, he or she should begin to practice the chord progression exercises. This chord progression will be used throughout the book; therefore it is highly recommended that the student memorizes it in order to be able to concentrate on the technical aspects of each stroke. The student must practice these exercises with a metronome and increase the tempo every day to develop stamina and speed control.

Once these exercises have been properly learned, the student must proceed to transpose these exercises chromatically or in the cycle of 4ths.5 By transposing these exercises to other keys, the student will encounter some situations where one of the mallets held in the hand will be played on a natural note and the other on a flat note. For instance, if we transpose these exercises to B flat major, on the first chord, one mallet is going to be playing a flat note (Bb) while the other is playing a natural note (F).

This technique will require the student to move the elbow away from the body and possibly to adjust the bend of the wrist. Also good footwork will contribute in making every hand adjustment easier and smoother. Your feet must always anticipate the next hand movement/adjustment. When playing unparallel intervals, the student must be sure to strike the bars exactly on the edge of the sharps/flats and between the resonator and the cord for the naturals. The first two solos of this book are based on the Double Vertical Strokes. The student must practice them slowly to ensure he or she is using the proper stroke motion.

The double lateral strokes can be divided in two sub-categories. Double inside (2-1 & 3-4) and double outside (1-2 & 4-3). If we explore all the different combinations of the inside/outside double lateral strokes, we have eight different variations of the double lateral strokes (Ex. 6). The double lateral strokes, consists of a single motion that produces two successive pitches. In order to execute it correctly, the mallets should be at a slight angle. The mallet which is to strike the bars second is held slightly higher than the mallet which is going to strike the bars first. The double lateral stroke requires one mallet in the hand to strike the instrument, followed immediately by the other mallet (for example, 1-2 or 2-1). The combined movement is almost like a scooping motion to the left or the right. An important factor to this stroke is to get both mallets (1-2 or 3-4) to produce an even sound. Practice the following floor exercises using the eight variations of the double lateral stroke. Remember to play every note evenly. Double lateral strokes: Floor Exercises Practice these exercises with a metronome starting at = 80-100. Repeat each exercise at least 5 times.

Section V - Single independent Strokes

Seccin V- Movimientos Independientes Example 7 Ejemplo 7

The sticking notation in example 7, illustrates the uses of the single independent stroke technique. In this particular stroke only one mallet strike the bars, while the other mallet remains somewhat immobile. In example 7 while mallets number 4 and 1 strike the bars, mallets 3 and 2 must remain immobile. The correct way to play single alternated strokes is to use a rotation motion of the forearm and wrist. One must use a rotary motion by twisting the wrist and the forearm from side to side. The mallet that is not striking the instrument basically serves as an axis for the rotation of the other mallet. This is very much like the same motion we used to screw or unscrew a light bulk.

Section VI - Single Alternating Strokes

&c

Seccin VI- Movimientos Sencillos/ Alternados Example 8 Ejemplo 8 B

Contrary to the independent stroke, where each mallet moves independently from each other, in the single alternating strokes each pair of mallets works as a unit. As one mallet strikes the bar, the wrist motion will force the opposite mallet to get to its starting height. One must use a rotary motion by twisting the wrist and the forearm from side to side. Remember to maintain a relaxed hand/body posture.

The main challenge with the alternating strokes is to achieve an even sound on every note. Therefore, this motion should be practiced slowly first and then increase the tempo gradually until one masters this motion. Remember to maintain an even sound throughout and not use fingers or the arms when playing the single alternated stroke. Practice the next exercises and be sure you are using the correct motion. Once you fill comfortable with these two strokes (independent and alternated), proceed to work with the next three solos.

Single alternating strokes: Floor Exercises Sitting down on the floor, practice exercises A & B with a metronome starting at = 70. Remember to use a rotation motion of the forearm and wrist and make sure every mallet sounds at the same volume level. Repeat each exercise 5 times

Although the sticking pattern for the following example is 1-3-2-4, the author recommends to experiment with other sticking patterns such as 4-1-3-2 /2-3-1-4 or 3-2-4-1 over the same chord progression.

Etude #5- YiYi My Little Ballerina Etude #6 - The Last Leaf Section VII - Chorales Playing chorales is one of the most difficult and challenging tasks in four mallets marimba performance. Mainly, because in order to create an illusion of sustained sound, one must play a fairly quick repetitive stroke.

There is a wide variety of rolling styles/concepts in four mallets marimba performance. In this section we are going to discuss three of them, traditional, ripple roll and combination rolls. Learning and mastering these three different types of rolls is a major component of four mallets marimba performance. Before we talk about these three types of rolls, we must take a look at some basic rules on roll speeds.

16

Roll Speed Rules

1-The louder the dynamic (F-FF), the faster the roll speed. 2-The softer the dynamic (MP-PP), the slower the roll speed. 3-The higher the register on the instrument, the faster the roll speed. 4-The lower the register on the instrument, the slower the roll speed.

Now that we understand the basic rules on roll speeds, lets talk about the three different types of rolls commonly use in four mallets marimba performance.

Traditional Rolls This is the most common, simple and perhaps the most useful of all rolls. This roll consists of vertical strokes, using an alternate hand to hand motion. Attention must be paid to balance (melody vs. accompaniment) and roll speed (remember the 4 rules).

Lateral Rolls (Ripple Rolls) Ripple rolls are also very useful and versatile but more difficult that the traditional roll. Contrary to the traditional roll, the ripple roll has its limitations because some chords voicing are physically difficult to execute with the ripple roll. This roll involves lateral strokes, alternated between the hands. The effect of the ripple rolls is a fast arpeggiated wave like sound. Most of the time performers prefer to use a (1-2-3-4) pattern of the lateral stroke because it emphasizes the soprano and bass voices of the chord. Lateral Rolls (Ripple Rolls) This particular roll is achieved by combining a lateral stroke in one hand and a vertical stroke in the other. This roll is very useful in situations where one hand is playing a pedal tone (sustaining the same pitch throughout the entire passage) and the other hand is playing the melody line. Use the lateral stroke to play the pedal tone and the vertical stroke to play the moving melody line. Finally, in order to prevent chorales from sounding metered, remember to modify the roll speed by combining the three roll types previously discussed and following the roll speed rules.

Section VIII - Interval Change In this section, we will work with exercises and pieces that feature interval changes. Use the following rules as general guidelines.7 1- Avoid any kind of tension. Keep the arms, hand and fingers relaxed regardless the length of the interval. Hand and fingers should look graceful and curved. 2- For the most part, the inside mallets (2-3) are the ones that make the necessary adjustments when doing interval changes. 8 3- Inside mallet is controlled with thumb and first finger (they work together). 4-The inside mallet will spin slightly between the thumb and the first finger as the interval changes. (Ex. 8-9) 5- The first finger straightens as it flips the inside mallet up and out. As the first finger straightens, it moves from its position under the mallet to a position on the side of the mallets. 6- When playing an interval of thirds, the inside mallet is centered under the thumb and held on the base of the thumb (Ex. 8). When playing larger intervals (octaves, tenth, etc.), the inside mallets spins between the first finger and thumb, the spinning motion will roll the mallets from its central position under the thumb to a position on the side of the thumb. Now the mallets will be held on the first joint of the middle finger (Ex.9).

7 8

This rule applies to the Stevens grip and not to the Burton or Traditional grip The outside mallets are used to make adjustments when playing intervals larger than an octave.

18

7- The middle finger helps to open and close the interval and also it works as a support for the end of the shafts.

Section IX - One Handed Octaves The one hand octave is another difficult task to execute when playing four mallets marimba pieces. Please review rule number six on the interval change section.

The one hand octave stroke requires a good deal of endurance, strength, control and accuracy to be executed. Less experienced players tend to use too much arm motion when playing one hand octave strokes. This can lead to harsh sounds and wrong notes. To execute the one hand octave strokes effectively, use a relaxed wrist stroke and keep the stroke heights low. Practice very slowly until the technical side of this stroke is learned, then try these exercises in other keys.

Solo #5- The Morning Veil p. 58 Solos The solos presented in this book include all of the technical concepts previously discussed. As with the etudes all the technical and musical concepts presented on each solo must be carefully study and practice in order to perform them correctly. All of the pieces in this section are compose as a solo rather than an etude. Therefore, they present much difficult challenges from the musical standpoint. Pay close attention to dynamics, rhythms, articulation and phrasing marks. Also listen to the recordings to get ideas about phrasing, sound and style. Each piece has its unique sound and flavor and its important that you capture it on your performance. Make sure you read practice routine sections to get ideas on how to practice more efficiently. solos Cada uno de los solos en este libro incluye varios de los conceptos tcnicos discutidos previamente.

23

Section X - Practice Routines

Seccin X - Rutinas de practica

Practice, is not monotonous/tedious repetition, even though repetition is involved. Practice is repeating a small portion of a piece or a technical exercise with a specific goal in mind (phrasing, articulation, sound etc.). For example, fixing the middle section of a piece is not a good goal because it could be too broad and too unfocused to accomplish in one practice section. It will be a better idea to work with a small section or phrase like mm. 1-8. Also, in order to be more efficient break those 8 measures in half, learn mm. 1-4 and 5-8 individually first and then connect them. Do not practice when you're absolutely brain-dead or physically exhausted. Also avoid the bad habit of "clock-watching" and any other kind of distraction such as TV, computers, cell phones, etc. For better results, practice slowly with a metronome and the music in front of you. Practice each hand individually when learning difficult passages. This has countless advantages. For instance, it allows you to learn the notes and rhythms correctly. Also it helps you to better digest all the information on the score, sticking, dynamics, phasing, articulation etc. This is also a great method for memorizing a piece. Work in an organized fashion. Make sure you have a plan design for your practice section. For example, you can divide your section in 20% - 30 % of scales, arpeggios or warm up exercises, 60% to literature and 10% - 20% to sight-reading or playing old stuff. Finally here is a list of all the essential tools you will need during a practice section. 1. Metronome with subdivisions 2. Pencils and markers 3. CD or I- pod. If you have a recording of the piece youre working on, use it as a reference. 4. Wide variety of mallets 5. Video camera (this is a very helpful source). It can be used to double check, technical and musical concepts. 6. Timer to keep track of the time you practice each piece and exercise.

24

In order to play the solos included in this book correctly, one must know how to practice each one of them. The first thing one must take into consideration is rhythm. It is pointless to memorize notes if one cant play the rhythms correctly. In addition, learning the rhythm first helps one memorize the piece faster because its easier to memorize rhythmic patterns rather than a bunch of notes.

Most of the pieces in this book are based on a simple/single rhythmic pattern. For instance the first piece is based on the following pattern:

Rh/MD LH/MI

Begin by practicing the pattern on the floor to work with the coordination of the hands. Once you feel comfortable with this pattern, begin adding the dynamics, accents, crescendos and decrescendos. After you complete this process, then go to the marimba and start learning the notes. One way to learn the notes is to first learn each hand individually. For instance you may want to try to learn the first fourth measures with your right hand only and then with your left hand only. Then put them together. Repeat this procedure with the rest of the piece. Remember to work for quality rather than quantity. Therefore dont try to learn the whole piece in one day. Instead, learn 4 or 8 measures maximum every day. If you learn 8 measures per day in one week you will learn 56 measures. Thats more than the amount of measures the first piece has; therefore, you will be able to learn it in less than a week if you follow my advice. Finally, music is all about expression and feelings. Although each piece is meant to help you to develop a particular technical task, you must also pay attention to the music; phrasing, dynamics, articulation and style. Remember that the technique is secondary to musical expression; therefore, technique is a facilitator to the expressiveness of music and not the other way around.
