Name: Jamie Kayoda March 6, 2013 Period 1 Partner: None Percent Yield Formal Lab Report Objective: In this

lab, a single replacement reaction between silver nitrate and copper will be carried out, and the percent yield of the reaction will be calculated. Method/Procedure: Silver will be a product of the reaction between 5mL of 0.5M silver nitrate and a copper strip. The silver product will be collected by filtering the products through a Buchner funnel. To find the percent yield, the actual and theoretical yields must be determined. To find the actual yield, the dry mass of the silver will be measured by subtracting the weight of the dried filter paper. To avoid error, the filtered product will be dried in the oven to remove water from the final mass. To find the theoretical yield, the amount of copper used in the reaction is needed. To measure the copper used, the difference between the initial and final mass of the copper strip will be measured. To avoid errors, the copper strip should be dry when measured. To calculate the theoretical yield of silver, stoichiometry will use the coppers mass and the balanced chemical equation to predict the amount of silver that can be produced. Once both yields are determined, the percent yield equation will be used below:

Data: (Borrowed from Zekes Group) Initial mass of copper Final mass of copper Mass of labeled filter paper Mass of dry filter paper +Ag Mass of copper used (2-1) Mass of silver product used (4-3)

0.841g 0.801g 0.456g 0.857g

Observations: Zeke/Diegos group noticed that the copper was wet when the final mass of the copper was recorded.

Calculations: Balanced Equation: Theoretical Yield: ______g Cu used Percent Yield: 1 mole 63.55 grams 2 Ag 1 Cu 107.8 grams 1 mole = _________g Ag

Conclusions/Error: CLAIM: State the percent error

EVIDENCE: State Data

REASONING: Explain sources of error that result in higher or lower percent yield than 100%. Be specific.
