PC Hard disk

The hard disk used virtually in all PCs is derived from mainframe fixed disks and the early Winchester drives introduced in the early 1980s . These drives became known as hard disk drives on the PC to differentiate them from floppy disk drives. The technology used to record data on a hard disk has remained essentially the same as that used on these early drives, although the size of the present drive is quite smaller, its speeds are much faster, and the capacity is very much larger than that of the earlier versions. There are really only two sizes of hard drives. The laptop 2.5" hard drive (shown at the left) the desktop 3.5" hard drive (shown at the right) Note: The numbers above are the diameter of the disk inside the drive. The 2.5" laptop drive is actually 2.75" wide and the 3.5" desktop drive is actually 4" wide.
