The Legend of Kelud Montain ( folklore from East Java ) A long long ago, there is a King named Brawijaya. Brawijaya was the king of Majapahit Kingdom. He had a daughter, her name was Dyah Ayu Pusparani. She was very beautiful princess that had skin like silk, eyes like diamond and face like full moon. Many young men fell in love with her. However, she always refused their marriage proposals. King Brawijaya was sad. He really wanted to see his daughter to get married. You have to get married soon, my daughter, said King Brawijaya. He continued, Im getting older, I know you are looking for a great husband. I have an idea, Im going to hold a competition. If a man can stretch Kyai Garudayaksas bow and lift Kyai Sekardelima s gong, he will be your husband." Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparani was speechless. She knew her father really wanted her to get married. She just hoped that she would marry a great man. She knew the bow and the gong had supernatural power. So the winner must had supernatural power too. The day was beginning, all participant around the kingdom that collect in the kingdoms field. And they begin to used their power to fullfill the chalenged. One by one men tried to stretch the bow and lifted the gong. No one succeeded. They were injured, their hands and backs were broken. King Brawijaya planned to stop the competition. He thought no one could win the competition. However, before he stopped it, a young man came to him. Dont stop the competition now. I havent

Everybody was looking at him. He was very strange. His head was unlike humans head. He had a bulls head. Whats your name? asked the king.

My name is Lembusura. answer that's man. A King thinking that a young man could not fullfil the contest. So he permit the young man to join as last participant. Okey! You can join this contest Said King

Then he tried to stretch the bow, he succeeded. The next test, he had to lift the gong. Again, he succeeded. Everybody applauded. They all were amazed by his power. However, Princess

Dyah Ayu Pusparani was sad. She never thought that she would marry a man who had a bulls head. I would not get married to the man with Cow head Said princess while running to the castle. King Brawijaya was also sad. But he had no choice. He had to keep his promise. . Later, he asked his men to prepare a wedding ceremony. The ceremony was getting closer and Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparani was really sad. She really wanted to cancel the wedding. She was thinking very hard. Finally she had an idea. She told his father. Father, I will ask Lembusura to make a well on the top of Kelud Mountain. I will say to him, the well is for me to take a bath, said Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparani. King Brawijaya understood the plan.. Lembusura. If you would married me you should make well in top of Kelud Mountain. Said Princess Ok. Princess. I will do it for you. Said Lembu Sura Then Lembusura dug the ground. He was digging until the hole was deep.. He can easily digging the well and just for moment he can finished the job. Father. I cant married Lembusura ask Princess And king could see his daughter very sad. So he ask the soldier to bury the Lembusura with big rock Bury him with big rock. Quick Quick!!! Said King Some soldiers pushed him into the hole. They buried him alive. Lembusura was helpless. He could not do anything. Please please dont bury me in this Well Ask Lembu Sura But the soldier ignored the Lembusuras cry. Just keep bury and bury. With the broken heart Lembusura give the curse to the King. One day, Kediri will get the big punished that is Kediri will be River, Blitar wi ll be land, and Tulungagung will be deep water The king very affraid about the cursed. So he begin to pray to the Kelud Mountain to prevent the curse. But many incident always connected to this curse and every Kelud Mountain exploded, people always connected with the Lembusuras angrier. From this story we can take lesson, first, dont judge the people by its cover. Second, dont ever break your promise!
