Sutter Portner 10/11/13 2 Science Modeling is MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when

a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area with low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I believe the vinegar will transfer into the egg because the egg has 74% water and the vinegar has 95%, which is obviously higher in concentration. The vinegar will move to the egg, because the egg has 21% water. In all, because of Osmosis I think the vinegar will move to the egg because the egg has less concentration. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 15.2 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 295 295 OBSERVATIONS ~ Bubbles on eggshell ~ 50 ml displacement ~ Chalky ~ Very delicate ~ Rubbery ~ Rubbery ~ Could see yolk ~ Partially translucent

CONCLUSION: In this lab we studied Osmosis. To understand the process, we set up a lab to show Osmosis. In this lab, we had an egg in a beaker of distilled white vinegar. The vinegar would either transfer into the egg or the water in the egg would transfer to the vinegar. I hypothesized the vinegar would flow into the egg because the egg had 74% water and the vinegar had 95% water. So, the higher concentrated area (the vinegar) would move to the egg causing it to swell and the vinegar to

decrease to a lower liquid level prior to putting the egg in. I have proof that the egg expanded and water flowed into the egg because of the picture I took. This proves that Osmosis took place in this lab.

This is a picture of a regular egg (On left) and a swelled up egg (on right.) ANALYSIS: In this lab we started with a raw uncooked egg. We put it in a beaker of distilled vinegar fully immersed, and waited each of the four days to see how the egg reacted to the vinegar. On day 1 we measured our egg by taking it out and setting it on top of a piece of paper. Then, we wrapped a piece of string around it and then measured the string. My class continued this pattern through the 4th day. On the 4th day, we also gathered up all the data from other students who did the same experiment. We found out the total expansion of my group, total expansion of the class, and total expansion of the 7th grade by finding the average of the numbers. Overall, my egg expanded 2.5 cm.
