Gardner English Honors 10 31 Oct 2013 The sound of the alarm clock ringing, but instead is put on snooze. The students forcefully drag themselves out of bed. Up and out the door when the sun has not yet come out. The dark clouds fill the foggy sky and sprinkles of rain are falling. The mornings start cold at 40 degrees, but warm up towards the afternoon. Walk into the gates right when the bell rings and have the need to rush to class. Enter the classroom and be seated before 8:20. If the student isnt in their seat by 8:20, they will be considered late. All the students arrive to class feeling tired and not yet fully awake. This is, of course because of the time school starts. Fellow students, there is no time to sit down Parallelism relaxed, eat a filling breakfast with your family, or make a healthy lunch to bring to school. Instead, the students are forced to grab their breakfast and eat on their way to school. As for lunch, they have to eat the unhealthy lunch food at school or wait until they get home which is around 3:00. Starting school so early has many negative impacts on the students. Because they are so tired, they will not be able to focus during class. Ask not why the students fall asleep during class, but why they do not get enough sleep at night. The thought of waking up so early causes anxiousness because the student must rethink everything they must do in order to get to school on time in the morning. Not only does the school schedule affect their concentration on school work, but it also affects their mood. Not getting enough sleep leads to being in a bad mood all day. This means that students will be grouchy, humorless, and exhausted. The students will not have enough energy to interact or communicate with others. They will also not be able to absorb as much in their brain from tiredness and therefore, not learning as much as they should be.

Of the many reasons as to why this school schedule is a bad idea, not having enough time to get ready is one of them. Fellow students, the early timing of school may be difficult, but we, as students must

make a change to this hectic schedule. There is many ways this can be done. We can have a conversation with the teachers or principal, have a vote, and spread the word. They should encourage all students to get involved in order to make a difference. Although the teachers may not approve because they know that most of the students will want a later school schedule, we must keep trying to encourage them. The early timing of school is not helpful to anyone. Some people may not agree with starting school later because they

believe that its reasonable to start at 8:20 and end at 2:25. That is not the case because if school started at 10:20 and ended at 4:25, there would be enough time to do homework, sleep late, and yet still wake up fully rested for school. Finally, all teachers, students, principals, and counselors should join me to take action and make a change for this school. We must greatly encourage for these changes to happen.
