ECE 391: Transmission Lines

Winter Term 2013

Homework Assignment #1 due Wednesday, Jan. 23 in class

1. [15] Find the component body dimensions of: (a) [5] 1/4W axial leaded resistor (b) [5] 1206 SMD resistor (c) [5] 0402 SMD resistor Assume that these elements will be used in an RF circuit with sinusoidal excitation. Also, assume the velocity of propagation across the elements is equal to 0.6c, where c = 3e8 m/s. For each component, compute the frequency at which it can safely be considered to be a lumped element. Use the lambda versus component body size criterion. 2. [10] A SiGe digital chip has a rise and fall time of about 40ps. On a PCB with a Teon dielectric (r = 2.2), at what lengths (in mm) can transmission line eects be ignored? 3. [20] Suppose you are building a circuit on a PCB. You have a choice of two dierent materials with diering velocity of propagation (vp ). vp is given as vp = c/ r , where c is the speed of light and r is the dielectric constant of the PCB material. You can use either FR4, with an r of 3.8, or PTFE, with an r of 2.1. (a) [10] Further, suppose you are building an analog circuit with signals in the 2.4 GHz, 802.11 band. Assuming that terminations will not to be used, determine the maximum trace length (in mm) for high-delity signaling on a board fabricated in each material. (b) [5] What advantage does the PTFE board provide the digital circuit designer? (c) [5] What advantage does the PTFE board provide the PCB layout person? [hint: two dierent but related answers] 4. [15] A sinusoidal wave f (z, t) = A sin(t + z /3) with phase constant = 0.4 rad/m travels with phase velocity vp = 15cm/ns. Determine (a) the direction of wave propagation, (b) the frequency of the wave, and (c) the wavelength of the wave. 5. [20] (a) A transmission line has the following distributed parameters: L = 1.3H/m and C = 14.5pF/m. Determine the characteristic impedance and the velocity of propagation. (b) For an air-lled coaxial cable with negligible losses having characteristic impedance of 50, determine (a) the velocity of propagation, (b) the distributed capacitance and inductance of the cable. 6. [20] Design a coaxial cable (specify physical parameters) with characteristic impedance Z0 = 50 using a polyethylene dielectric (r = 2.3) between the inner and outer conductor. The cable should provide a signal delay of 5nsec.
