Well, I have been pondering over this thought for sometime now How to get into top IIMs namely Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow in todays scenario. I have seen people getting baffled by the criterion of top IIMs in India and bugging themselves to the extent that it starts hindering their preparation to the extent that people underperform on C-Day. While one should refrain from thinking about the criterion at this stage, he/she should also have a reality check and should not worry about just few B-Schools. Getting into IIM Ahmedabad

When we talk about top IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad is the first name that strikes us. It is the institute whose dream gave birth to the passion for cracking CAT. Let us dive deep into its selection criterion and see how easy or tough it is to get into the undoubtedly top IIM of the country. IIM Ahmedabad calculates Application Rating depending on the marks obtained by the candidate in class X, class XII and Graduation. The good thing about the rating system is that it doesnt provide any extra points for being a non-engineer or for being a female. It provides a level playing field to all irrespective of graduation background and gender, atleast in in the initial phase where shortlist for WA/PI process is done. So, a General Engineer Male/Female and Non-Engineer Male/Female need to get same CAT score (assuming they have similar marks in Class X, class XII and Graduation). However, huge weightage is given to marks in Graduation and people who do engineering from universities where it is tough for even university topper to get 80% are at a disadvantage as compared to students who graduate from places where toppers can easily get 90 plus in even engineering (Yes, there are universities in South India where topper of engineering batch has 96 plus).

Composite Score for IIM A (CS -> Composite Score, value in bracket is CAT Score)
Analyzing the above calculated Composite Score (at different CAT Scores of 350, 300, 275, 250 and 200) out of 450, you would realize that even if the person scores 99.9 percentile in CAT but has less than 70% in graduation, less than 80% in class XII and less than 90% in class X, it would be actually very tough for him/her to get a call for WA/PI round, while a person with 90+ score in class X and XII and 80 plus score in Graduation, may fetch a WA/PI call at 99.5-99.6 percentile itself. Though gender diversity and academic diversity are not taken into account for initial shortlist, it might have some latent weightage while candidates are evaluated in the second phase of the admission process.
Getting into IIM Bangalore

IIM Bangalore is another top IIM which is at high priority for all MBA Aspirants. However, IIM Bangalore has always enjoyed the reputation where it is considered to be completely out of reach of anyone who had either of the academic scores in class X, class XII and graduation slightly less, unless the respective candidates score of either of the sections or overall is among the top 10 scores. IIM Bangalore doesnt take the scores of class X, class XII and graduation at the absolute face value. The scores obtained by students in respective classes are divided by the 90th percentile score for respective applicable category and is then taken into account for calculation of score depending on which candidates are called for the next round of admission process. Sample example of above normalization of class X, class XII and graduation marks is as shown in the image below. Please see that following table reflects only hypothetical values to give you an idea about scoring and is not the exact set of values used by IIM Bangalore.

Now, to cover the difference of approximately 7 points here, student with marks in 70s would have to score around 0.35 to 0.40 percentile more. In a way, student with scores in 70s might not get a call even at 99.9 percentile if there is a person with strong academics who has 99.5 percentile, assuming both have same amount of work experience.
However, point to note here is that person with academics in 70s and score of 99.9 can get a call for next phase over the student with strong academics, if he has more work experience than the other candidate especially if it is 36 months or more in the case of IIM Bangalore. IIM Bangalore considers amount of work experience as well for rolling out calls for the next phase of the admission process (It provides maximum possible marks for work experience if it is equal to or more than 36 months), unlike IIM Ahmedabad. However, the similarity between IIM A and IIM B is that they both dont give extra bonus for being a girl and hence do not take away level playing field atleast when it comes to gender.

Getting into IIM Calcutta

When we talk about top 3 IIMs, IIM Calcutta is the only IIM that provides extra points to girls in the name of gender diversity and provides a non-levelled playing field to lakhs of male aspirants who start preparing for CAT with the dream of studying in Joka. The only better take away for the male applicant is that IIM Calcutta has not shown any significant reluctance for taking engineers by any seperate weightage for nonengineers in the initial shortlisting phase. While students are evaluated against maximum of 100 marks for initial shortlisting, weightage given to CAT score is 77 and 10 each for class X and XII marks. There is no seperate weightage for graduation marks. However CAT, Class X and Class XII weightages sum up to only 97. Rest 3 marks are for gender diversity. Before getting into overall marks that can be obtained out of 100, let us see how much a student will score out of 97 depending on CAT Score, class X and class XII marks. CAT score is normalized depending on maximum marks obtained in CAT 2013 out of 450. We have assumed that maximum marks obtained in CAT 2013 are 350 out of 450.

IIM C Scoring
Coming back to the scoring on the basis of gender, female candidates get 3 out of 3 while male candidates get 0 out of 3.
Thus, a male candidate with 350 marks (100 percentile in the assumed example) will be at the same position as the female candidate with approximately 336 marks if they both have similar marks in class X and class XII.
Thus, creating a huge difference between the marks required by a male candidate and a female candidate for getting shortlisted for second phase of the admission process.
Getting into IIM Lucknow

Among top 4 IIMs, the IIM that is most reluctant for selecting engineers and to add on to it, even males is

IIM Lucknow. In addition to weightage given to class X, class XII and graduation marks; it also gives weightage to Gender Diversity and Academic Diversity. However, before looking into these 2 additional parameters, let us have a look at the difference created in scoring of candidates after academic scores and CAT score has been taken into consideration with due weightages. IIM Lucknow calculates score out of 50 for shortlisting candidates. Out of 50, 38 marks are for CAT score where score is normalized depending on the maximum score achieved in CAT 2013. 1 mark is there for each class X and class XII and 3 marks are allocated for graduation. Graduation score is not taken at the absolute face value but are normalized using a complex statistical formula including Mean of the marks and standard deviation of marks in each of the graduation streams. Following table shows the score out of 43 (38 of CAT, 1 each of X and XII and 3 of Graduation) that would be achieved by a candidate depending on his/her marks in X, XII, Graduation and CAT Score. We have assumed that the maximum score obtained in CAT 2013 is 350 out of 450 and have calculated the respective scores accordingly. Also, please note that value of graduation scoring is based on a small sample taken and might vary slightly when IIM L takes into account entire pool of applicants. However, the numbers in table below reflect the trend which will more or less remain the same.

IIM L Scoring
In addition to the above 43 marks; 2 marks are for Work Experience, 3 for Academic Diversity (for PGP Course) and 2 for Gender Diversity, taking the total of maximum possible marks to 50. An engineer is not eligible to get any marks out of 3 allocated for Academic Diversity and a Male candidate is not eligible for any marks out of 2 allocated for Gender Diversity. Because of this differential treatment to males and engineers, the difference created in required scores for getting shortlisted for second phase of admission process becomes quite significant.
Male Engineer getting 350 marks (100 percentile in the assumed example) is equivalent to Female Engineer with approximately 330 marks which in turn is equivalent to Female Non-Engineer with approximately 303 marks and Male Non-Engineer with approximately 322 marks.

Before we conclude, let us have a loot at the snapshot of who belongs to whom as per the different shortlisting criterion of different IIMs.

Red blocks in the above image reflect the scenarios where getting shortlisted would be tough, yellow shades reflect the moderate chances while green reflects the strong chances. The slight shade variations of the same color in the couple of blocks should be treated as better chances where the shade is brighter. With this, we come to the end of the article with an attempt to facilitate you in understanding the realistic chances and putting the efforts accordingly. You should not be thinking that clearing the cutoffs as mentioned in the selection criterion of different IIMs should help you big time but you should be aiming at maximizing your scores to strengthen the chances.
Remember not to target 99.5 or for that matter even 99.8, target the magical figure of 100 if you want to set any target. Aim at being the best, aim at the highest possible landmark and not the predictive cut offs thrown by so called experts who claim of knowing the cut offs.

Hi!! I am pursuing chartered accountancy and I have scored 88% in my third year BCom exams.. But in my first and second yr BCom exams, I have scored in the range of 60-70% .. This is a specific question.. the university doesnt take into account average marks over the three years, just the final exams. In case of IIMA, how will they consider this? an average of three years or 88% ? Please confirm.! Thanks a ton!

Sir, My Acad. are as following=> 10th =>61%(CBSE)- 2006 pass out , 12th => 66% (CBSE)-2008 pass out, B.Sc Multimedia & Animation => 59% . work ex => as of now 20 months , till Fed 2014. I am a male , General Category Candidate. In this 20 months i work with one national news channel for 6 months & then left my job to work as a Freelancer project & recently join reliance (Jan. 2014). I have experience to work with both film ( Hollywood & Bollywood) & advertising as an Digital artist. Sir, can u please tell me the chances of which IIM should i target? and required percentiles approximately for them. . Apart from IIMs does my profile fit for other top B School like XLRI, spjain, FMS, JBIMS, MDI, MICA etc. THANKS in advance.

Buddy Your profile does suit for all other top b schools except for spjain. And to be honest, IIMs look tough with these marks. However, will suggest to not to worry on all these fronts but give your best to maximize your score so that whatever the other parameters are you may strengthen your case. All the best.

Sir, The details of my past academic performance are as follows: Xth : 97% XIIth: 94% I m currently pursuing my B.Tech from a top notch gov college and tentative graduation percentage to be around 79% And yeah..male general category ( reading your article i assume its a wrath !!) My 10th score 91.4 12th score 84.6 Graduation 6.42 (CGPA) (i knw this wil hurt my chances) I am planning on giving the GMAT next year. Hello Sir, I am a 2009 B.tech (EE)graduate working in TCS for the past 4 years.I have resigned recently as there was no growth for me(below average coder).Also I want to focus completely on CAT as time is of the essence to me now.I do not regret my decision but I am not sure whether this will have any negative impact during the PI process.If yes,can you please suggest me some ways to cope with it.I have decided to work in a NGO along with preparation.My profile: 10th-85(ICSE) 12th-88(ISC) B.Tech-8.47.CAT-Gen. Please guide.

Shuvayan, There would be no negative impact- Many people have left jobs in past to prepare for CAT and have converted top IIMs so need not worry you will just need to prepare one answer for this during PI time. However, it is far now so will suggest to not think on this and prepare well for CAT and score high. This can be tackled later. Cheers!

I am a male engineer with around 4 years of exp.My profile Xth-85(ICSE),XIIth-88(ISC).CGPA(8.47). I have been working in TCS for the past 4 years but resigned recently because I never liked coding and always wanted to go for MBA.So with just 6 months left for CAT i wanted to go all out for it and hence left my job.I do not regret my decision because i know sooner or later i would have left IT. What I want to know is that will leaving my job for this reason have a negative impact during PI for the top B Schools?I plan to do some NGO work along with preparation.Please guide me as to how to fill the gap. Thanks in advance..

i have got 81% in X , 75.4% in 12 and 69.97% in B.Tech from NIT(passed out in 2012). I have been working with NTPC(a PSU) since then. Do I have a chance of getting any IIM or any top B-school.. Would it be wise to leave a govt. job(with annual package of 11 Lacs) as you have already written that IIM degree doesnt guarantee a successful career.? My age is 24+

It is very subjective and no one can predict the percentile that may guarantee the call- depends on class 10, 12, Graduation, work ex, sex etc. kind of parameters as well.

CA articleship will not be considered as the work ex buddy! You have decent chances for C and L, A looks slightly tough due to 10th marks!! Aadish, Unfortunately, class 12th will be the spoiler for IIM B AND SPJain other colleges you may scrape through on the basis of lass 10th score (and a good B.Tech score). Try to maximize your score in B.Tech as much as you can and then couple it with good CAT score. Hope this helps. All the best.

Hello Sir. I have 73% in 10th and 83% in 12th. But two years gap after that due to severe family problems. Then I again started my studies and scored 65% in B.Com(H) from Delhi University through regular college. Then I completed Law from Delhi University with 64%. Was amongst the top 5% of my batch. If it is about academic eligibility you are eligible to write all the exams. It is just that you might not be shortlisted for few colleges where lot of weightage is being given to 12th or Graduation marks. However, there are still certain top colleges which does not have such a criteria. Buddy, 1. You do have a good chance under reserved category. 2. Being from IIT doesnt help in getting shortlist, it might help in WAT PI process. 3. Focus on preparation and try to score high to maxmimize your chances. Also, improve further your b.tech marks as much as you can. 4. There is no designated right time to begin preparation. Few have cracked it in just 2 months preparation while few could not even in 10 months. Since you are in 2nd year engineering it seems will suggest to just work on vocabulary part and reading part right now work on other things from second half of third year. Hope this helps.

They first filter on the basis of some CAT cutoff. Then include academic score weightage and calculate a cumulative score of all the candidates in filtered list. Now, on the basis of this cumulative score merit list number of calls (as deemed suitable) are rolled out by colleges. Hope this helps.

Hi Supriya, Yes, you have decent chances for even IIM A. Good scores definition will vary from IIM to IIM any score that fetches you a call! While 98.5 can be good for few IIMs, IIM A might need a score around 99.5 !! Hope this helps.

Sir, I have a percentage of 68 in class 10, after which due to some family problem had to stop my studies.However, after 3years I enrolled into Diploma scored 84 percentage. Via campusing got a job and while working I had enrolled into Correspondence Course in Engineering and had completed AMIE with a CGPA of 6.73. Ayush, 10th and graduation are your pluses while 12th marks are slight disadvantage. However, you do have decent chance if you back this with a good CAT score- somewhere in the range of 99.2+. If you are asking if your profile is eligible for shortlisting by IIM A in case you score well, I would say that with your given scores in 10th and Diploma and your score in engineering till now, it would be really difficult for you to get into IIM A. We cannot predict the score that can assure an IIM call, however what I can say is that you have a pretty good profile and you should be able to fetch decent IIMs calls if your score is good too. With just 5 years of experience, you might not be a good fit for IIM A. However, you may get into ISB. But, my personal suggestion is to give the best shot at GDPIs this year for 2 year MBA and try to convert it as it would suit you the best for now. Cheers and All the best!

Take CAT this year and then following year you can take GMAT. You need to prepare for certain topics seperately due to their different weightages in GMAT. Also, taking GMAT mocks is very important. Hope this helps.

Ram, We cannot predict the score, but yes you do have strong chances. Just work to maximize your score as much as you can.

Buddy, We cannot predict the scores needed for BLAC. However, seeing your marks and criteria A and B might be slightly tough but C and L can be in the reach if you are able to score well. For target, as we have been suggesting to others as well, do not target a mediocre score if you want to target something, target 100. Cheers and All the best.

We would not like to predict any cutoff and would not suggest you to go by any predicted numbers. Rather, will suggest you to maximize your score as much as possible and strengthen your chances. With 90+ in X and XII, OBC quota and even gender advantage, you should not be at a loss in any of the IIMs except at IIM B because of graduation marks. Cheers and All the best.

Thus, a male candidate with 350 marks (100 percentile in the assumed example) will be at the same position as the female candidate with approximately 336 marks if they both have similar marks in class X and class XII. Thus, creating a huge difference between the marks required by a male candidate and a female candidate for getting shortlisted for second phase of the admission process. Huge difference really? The cut-offs in our batch for girls were not less than 0.05 to 0.1 percentile lower than the guys. So huge is not really the word. #just_saying #stiil_a_good_article

Ravi, Thanks for the appreciation buddy. Yes, difference can be of 1-2 correct questions. For few, it can be huge (for an above averageaverage student) while for others (brilliant ones), it is something that can be easily taken care of. Subjective at the end of the day. Cheers!

Sir , my Class 10th -83 , 12th 85.2 , Engg 71.5 , Work exp 31 months (IT) , NC-OBC what should be my minimum percentile to get calls from IIM-C , and IIM-K 95 %tile will do ? And if so , what number of attempts in each section would get me that score ?

Buddy, We cannot predict the minimum percentile, rather we refrain from it. As we have mentioned in the last couple of lines of the article if you want to aim at something, aim at the maximum. So not target the predicted scores as they may always ditch you. So, be safe , target magical figure of 100 so that you end up scoring as high as possible. And cutoffs would be cleared in the process of score maximization. Cheers!

Shuvam, Our analysis is on a hypothetical figure taken. IIM B maintains the database of last 2 years of every board and takes 90th percentile from it. Hope this helps.

Sir, My Acads are as following=> 10th =>89.4(CBSE)- 2006 passout , 12th => 81.4 (CBSE)-2008 passout, Engineering graduation => 67.5% . work ex => as of now 0 months , till may 2014 it will be 6 months. I am a male , General Category Candidate . I have a drop of one year after 12th for enginering exams preparation. Sir, can u please enlighten me the chances of which IIM should i target? and required percentiles aproximately for them. If possible , sir just give me a glimse of various IIMs i can target including new ones. Apart from IIMs does my profile fit for spjain pgdm as they do take freshers and chances for getting there? Am a regular reader of career anna and a cat aspirant too. Really want to say u guys are really rocking , i hope my few humble words do motivate u to carry on the stupendous work u guys r doing.

Buddy, Among top IIMs, you can aim at A and C. Apart from this, all new IIMs can be targetted. Chances for SPJain are bleak, but yes you may try for other top B-Schools like NITIE, FMS, MDI, SJMSOM etc. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Debarun, Everything remains same for reserved categories except that initial cutoffs are less and the list would be prepared among the reserved category students and hence overall marks required would reduce a bit. Apart from that, weightage of academics, work experience, gender etc. remain the same. Hope this helps.
