Standard 2 Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teaching Learning Context

Click on http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers Read Standard 2 Your portfolio is based on the ISTE National Education Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers standards. For each standard in your portfolio please read through the corresponding NETS Teachers Standard. While we will not complete all of the sub categories listed we will address (maybe get a start on is a good phrase) some of them. This will help you understand the assignments and required entries. I am also modeling what you will be doing in your classrooms as you develop learning activities to address the various standards for which you and your students will be held accountable.

Learning activity
3 to 5 paragraphs (min) general description of a learning activity which ADDRESSES the standards (both Content and Technology) you selected. Learning activity must also MODEL the Core Teacher Standards (knowledge) you selected. Point out, by highlighting or comments, items that address the Idaho Content as well as the AASS Standards and the Idaho Core Teacher Knowledge that you have selected (above). Remember Thinkfinity and other web resources.

This is VERY Important. Much of your Technology Portfolio is related back to this Learning Activity. Use Thinkfinity and other resources to help you develop a Learning Activity.

Remember, you can and SHOULD come back and add to, fix up or upgrade your Learning Activity as we go through the semester
Filling your plate lesson plan In the beginning of the lesson I will draw a plate on the board and have students tell me what kind of foods are on their plates for dinner on a regular night at home. (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1.5) After getting feedback from students and drawing pictures of their foods on the plate and filling the plate I will leave this drawing and come back to it at the end of the lesson. The overall lesson will teach healthy practices to students so they can get the right nutrition needed for strong healthy bodies.( K-2.H.7.1.1, K-2.H.7.1.1. ) These habits will help prevent sickness and help form healthy habits they can continue through their lives. Good nutrition involves balancing your plate with different food groups to get all the necessary nutrients the body needs. The foods that they choose should be whole foods high in vitamins, for example, they should eat an apple instead of apple flavored fruit bars. Half of their plate should be colorful with fruits and vegetables. These can include carrots, apples, oranges or any favorite type of whole fruit and vegetable. One quarter of their plates should include whole grains like whole wheat crackers or bread. The other quarter should be lean protein like fish or beef. In addition they can add one serving of dairy; this could be cheese or yogurt. Healthy fats and oils should be included in small amounts. Processed foods and sugar should be considered sometimes foods. These foods fill you up and leave little room for foods that have nutritional value so they should only be eaten in small amounts on occasion. I will show the slide show that I put together to explain what types of foods fit best in each food group and what the portion sizes should be. I will explain the importance of eating a variety of foods each day to get all the nutritional needs necessary. The activity will include the students cutting out foods individually from page one from link. (ISTE, NETS) They will then choose which foods they think will be the most nutritious and glue them to their plate. (From page 2 of link)They can color the plate and decorate it as they like. I would also like

them to choose a drink that is healthy and nutritious and draw the type of drink that they chose. After all of the students have filled their plates with healthy food options I will ask them to compare what is on their plates with the plate we drew on the board earlier. I will ask them the following questions and we will discuss them as we go along. Are you eating enough colorful fruits and vegetables? Are you eating whole grains or refined grains? Are your plates balanced with all or most of the food groups? Should you cut out some sugar and processed foods?

Classroom Layout You can be realistic or go for the classroom of your dreams. In addition to your sketch, include a couple of paragraphs describing your classroom especially the technology.

My class will have long tables that are connected for the students. This gives them bigger area of workspace also. There will be a cozy reading corner and this area could also be used as a reward for students who are doing their best. There will be computer stations, hopefully more than the two that are shown. Students can rotate using the computer for learning activities. They could do an activity very similar to the one above on the computer instead of just using paper and glue. The game is called Blast off and its a free download available online. Blast off I would like to have different areas of space in the classroom especially for this age (K-2) since they are wiggly and would do best moving around. I would have a sink and refrigerator for snacks and water. I would also have fun things posted around the room about healthy eating and exercising habits.
