Biomass Wind power

Made by Simon and Trym

How Wind power work?

Basically it means how does it generate electricity. These are the parts of a wind turbine : Blades, Tower, gear box and many screws and bolts.

The following steps tell you how it generates electricity: 1. When there's wind it blows against the blades and the blades spin. 2. The blades are connected to a main shaft. When the blades spin the main shaft spin. 3. The main shaft is connected to a gear box. In the gear box there are many cogs the ones spin fast and the big ones spin slow. 4. The gears in the main shaft spins another shaft called the high-speed shaft that spins very fast. 5. The high speed shaft is connected to another shaft that is made up of magnet wrapped up in copper coil wire which then creates electricity 6. Finally there is a wire running down the tower and goes down under ground to where it is needed.

How biomass works

There are a couple of ways you can use biomass. You can turn it into fuel to power your car that is called biofuel. The main one is burning animal waste and flower materials. When it is turned into electricity it is called bioelectricity. When you burn these things it heats water. Which turns into steam which turns a turbine which creates energy.

How is Wind power harnessed or extracted?

On the Wind turbine there is a weather station that makes the main shaft turn and everything is connected to the main shaft for example the blades will turn and the weather station is there so if the wind is coming from another direction we wont lose a lot of time waiting for the wind direction to change. The weather station sends it information to the computer in the computer in the turbine which then turns the Nacelle and the blades.

How is biomass harnessed or extracted?

Biomass is harnessed by getting picked up of the ground or cut of a tree. The animal waste is from a farm or somewhere theres a lot of animal waste. And the plant materials are from a farm also. The plant materials are from trees and wood. Biofuel is made bicorn and other fruits and vegetables.

How biomass has evolved over time.

Some of you might not know this.I bet you didn't know that biomass is how many resources are made. Such as oil and gas. They are known as fossil fuels because they are dug up from the ground.oil is formed by plants and animals getting compressed very hard. But this takes a very long time over hundreds of thousands million years. As you can see a very long time to get a bit of oil .

How much electricity does Wind power produce?

In 2011 Wind turbines produced about 3 percent of electricity produced in USA. Thats enough energy to supply 10 million homes. One Wind turbine can produce one MW in one day wow!

How much electricity does biomass produce?

Biomass gives you a lot of electricity here is how much each source gives you. MJ=megajoules Grass=4 MJ/Kg paper=17 MJ/KG straw=15 MJ/KG domestic waste=9 MJ/KG Wood=10000-20000 KG/HA/YR sugar cane=35000 KG/HA/YR biofuel: sunflower oil=33MJ/L castor oil=33MJ/L Biomass production rate: sunflower=952 HA/L soybean=442 HA/L castor oil=1413 HA/L

Positives and Negatives of Wind power.

Pros: The Wind turbine doesn't cost a lot compared to solar power, It does not produce any emissions or greenhouse gasses, It also gets tourists to your county if you live with only using wind turbines as most percentage of energy collecting and it doesn't harm a lot of wildlife. Cons: It does harm some wildlife a year about 12 animals, The wind turbines take up a lot of space and people think it looks bad, It also destroys surrounding crops and farms and wind turbines dont always produce the same amount of energy because at times it goes slower and at times it goes faster.

Positives and negatives of Biomass.

Pros:The positive side of biomass is that you can find it nearly every where.Biomass produces a lot of eletricaty. You make a lote of money. It is kind of renewable. It can power cars and it leaves a small amount of greenhouse gasses than normal fuel.

Cons:Building these factures cost a lote of money. You hurt the inviroment and the creatures. It takes a lot of space to make tree farms/orchades.It is not renewable in a way.It effect the envroment around it.It is hard work to get these materials. It release greenhouse gasses.

Wind turbines limit.

The minimal speed the wind has to be to generate electricity is around 12-14 km/h.
The fastest the wind has to be to generate full capacity of electricity is 50-60 km/h.

The amount of wind needed to get the blades damaged is 90 km/h then the brakes come in handy.

How does Wind power affect the way we live?

It takes up space where farmers grow their crops. One large wind turbine costs $1.5 billion dollars and to install and without the power lines and land.It has been proven by scientists that if your are sleeping or just near a wind turbine for a long time it damages your mental health and sleeping pattern because of the noise.

How does Biomass affect the way we live?

biomass has a good side plus a bad side.the bad side is that it pollutes the from people cutting the trees down with chainsaws.to moving it to the factury were it pollutes more. The positive side to it is that produces a lot of energy for houses. For everyone is exposed to it they dont sufffer long term affect.
