Evaluation: Candy Bar/Monitoring

Students will investigate the concept of fractions (through 12ths) using a Hershey chocolate bar.

Materials: Hershey Chocolate Bar Fractions Sheet to accompany it Paper Towels Hand sanitizer Homework sheet Crayons Document Camera (ELMO) Pencil

Procedures: 1. Pass out paper towels and make sure everyone hand sanitizes their hands 2. Go over rules about Hershey Bar/ We have to do work first, but once we have done work, then you will be allowed to eat them. If I see anyone eating the candy bar they will have to do the activity without the real candy bar. 3. Once I have gone over the rules I will pass out candy bars and activity sheet. 4. Instruct the students to open the candy bar. 5. Ask students What do you notice about the candy bar? Raise your hands and tell me a characteristic or trait of the candy bar (Describe it) 6. It is splint into 12 equal parts. These parts are called fractions.

7. This candy bar is split into 12 equal pieces. To Wright a fraction you have a top and a bottom number. Does anyone know what the top number is called? (Numerator) What is the bottom number called? (Denominator) 8. On your sheet there is a place to color in your candy bar and to write a fraction. Please write your candy bar in fraction form 12/12. You have 12 out of 12 pieces. (Model this on your own sheet on doc cam. (Continue this through the lesson). 9. Can you split your candy bar in half and color in the next model. What fraction of your candy bar is ? 6/12. 10. Split your candy bar into 4 groups of 3 pieces in each group. What fraction of your candy bar is in three of those groups? 9/12. What fraction is in one group? 3/12 11. If you ate one piece of candy (you may eat 1 piece or save it till the end), what fraction of your candy bar did you eat? What fraction of your candy bar is left? 11/12. 12. Make sure your name is on your paper? Please finish coloring the fractions on your activity sheet, and writing the fractions, and then turn it into the math bin. You may eat your candy bar while you finish. 13. If you finish early you may start on the homework sheet (Fraction sheet). 14. I will walk around and monitor
