Briana McDermott Stegman Period B November 2nd, 2012 Percent of Students on Free/Reduced Lunch Compared to Average CAPT Scores

The purpose of this lab is to investigate the relationship between the percent of students on free/reduced lunch per school district and their average CAPT score. The data in the following table was found here: http://sdeportal.ct.gov/Cedar/WEB/ResearchandReports/SSPReports.aspx % on Average Free/Reduced CAPT Score Lunch (independent (dependent x) y) 2.5 83.5 3.1 76.3 3.3 79.4 3.7 61.7 5.4 75.1 6.3 52.8 6.6 76.4 6.9 52.7 7.1 76.9 7.2 73.4 9.4 60.5 11.3 78.4 11.9 69.2 13.1 47.8 16.2 64.1 17.7 61.8 20.7 53.2 21.6 44.6 21.7 34.4 22.9 34.3 23.4 30 26.5 49.9 27 41.8 31.3 46 37.5 34.2 39 37.9 42.6 37.4 44 34.2 61.1 19.5 93.3 21.4 The mean data point of this information is (21.5,53.6) where 21.5 is the average of all the percentages of students on free/reduced lunch and 53.6 is the average of all the average CAPT scores. Two graphs of all this information have been provided. One is a handdrawn graph with a hand-drawn line of best fit, the other has been made using Microsoft Excel. The data seems to have a moderate relationship.

Here are the calculations for the linear model based off the hand-drawn graph: (21.5, 53.6) and (50,32) Slope = 32 53.6 = -21.6 = -0.757 50 21.5 28.5 y 53.6 = -21.6 (x 21.5) 28.5 y 53.6 = -21.6x + 16.29 28.5 y = -0.757x + 69.89 According to Excels calculations, the linear regression is: y = -0.749x + 69.69

The correlation coefficient, according to Excel, is: R2 = .636 This correlation coefficient means that the data has a weak relationship.

Use the linear model to predict what the average CAPT score is at Old Shiz Secondary School in Oz if 78% of the students in Oz are on free/reduced lunch. y = -0.757x + 69.89 y = -0.757(78) + 69.89 y = -59.046 + 69.89 y = 10.844 The average CAPT score at Old Shiz Secondary School is predicted to be 10.84 if 78% of the students are on free/reduced lunch.

Use the linear model to predict what percent of students at Emerald City Secondary School in the Emerald City are on free/reduced lunch if their average CAPT score is 28.9. y = -0.757x + 69.89 28.9 = -757x + 69.89 -40.99 = -757x x = 54.147 The percentage of students on free/reduced lunch at Emerald City Secondary School is predicted to be 54.15% if their average CAPT score is 28.9.

Use the linear regression to predict what the average CAPT score is at Old Shiz Secondary School in Oz if 78% of the students in Oz are on free/reduced lunch. y = -0.749x + 69.69 y = -0.749(78) + 69.69 y = -58.422 + 69.69 y = 11.268 The average CAPT score at Old Shiz Secondary School is predicted to be 11.27 if 78% of the students are on free/reduced lunch.

Use the linear regression to predict what percent of students at Emerald City Secondary School in the Emerald City are on free/reduced lunch if their average CAPT score is 28.9. y = -0.749x + 69.69 28.9 = -0.749x + 69.69 -40.479 = -0.749x x = -54.459 The percentage of students on free/reduced lunch at Emerald City Secondary School is predicted to be 54.46% if their average CAPT score is 28.9.

The linear model and the linear regression were almost the same, therefore the predictions are very close to being the same as well.

Through this project, it seems as though there is definitely a higher success rate of students passing the CAPT if the percent of students on free/reduced lunch is lower. As the percent of students on free/reduced lunch is an indicator of poverty, it seems that poverty reduces a students ability to succeed in school. Such poverty could also limit the resources that the teachers have to help the students succeed.
