Title: M&M Graphing Grade Level: 6th Subject: Math Author: Briana Chapman Concept: 4MAT System Overview

Objective: Students will collect data and use and Excel spreadsheet to find the mean, median and mode of the data collected from the class. Students will interpret tables, charts and graphs and create their own. Students will used digital tools as sources for problem solving. Common Core State Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.A.2 Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape. CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.4 Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots. CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5.c Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered. CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5.d Relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data were gathered. Required Resources: Bags of M&Ms, access to the COW (computer on wheels) for Excel, M&M activity sheets.

Quadrant 1, ENGAGE Objective: Students will have to predict and guess the number of M&Ms in each bag the student has, as well as the number of each color. Activity: Ask students to predict and number of M&Ms they think they have without touching the bag and to write it down. Ask students to then predict how many of each color they think they will have in their individual bag. Write these numbers down. Have students open their bags and compare their findings to their predictions, writing down the difference of the predicted and actual.

Evaluation: Were students predictions accurate? Did students find the difference between the predicted and actual amount of M&Ms?

Quadrant 2, SHARE Objective: Students will create data using M&Ms as well as create a chart and spreadsheet using Excel. Activity: Hand out the worksheet to students and have them follow along and answer the questions. Have students complete the charts on Excel Spreadsheet rather than on the paper, explaining that they will use Excel to find and use different formulas. Evaluation: Watch as students begin the process of collecting data. Are they placing data in the right columns? Are they answering the questions accurately and appropriately? Quadrant 3, PRACTICE Objective: Students will use EXCEL to find the mean, median, mode, and percentage of the M&Ms at their group table. Activity: Have students collect data from their table partners, inputting this into their Excel Spreadsheet. Students will then find the mean, median, and mode of the groups bags of M&Ms. Next, have student use the formula to find the percentage of each color of M&M. Have students create a graph (bar, circle, etc. of the different colors and numbers of M&Ms amongst the group. Have the group compare answers and findings. Evaluation: Are students sharing their data with each other? Are the groups getting similar/exact answers? Quadrant 4, PERFORM Objective: Students will present their findings to the class using the Excel spreadsheet and graph. Activity: Have students come up in their groups to present their data on M&Ms. Have the other groups compare the data to their own asking was it similar or different. Evaluation: Did students present well? Did other groups participate in comparing their data to that of the other groups? REFERENCE: http://www.webblue.havre.k12.mt.us/Teacher/tech_lessons/
