He is best known for two long novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Characters Protagonist Aksenov - young merchant who live in Vladimir who is wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit Antagonist Makar - the man who caused Aksenov sufferings Other Characters: the wife of Aksenov Merchant- the one being murdered in the story Setting Town of Vladimir Jail in Siberia Conflict When Aksenov found out that the merchant he stayed last night has been found with his throat cut and the official searched his things and found a knife with a blood on his bag. One day some new prisoners, one of them is Makar Semyonich, are transferred to the prison. After overhearing several conversations, Aksionov is convinced that Makar Semyonich is the man who committed the murder for which Aksionov was blamed. Eventually Aksionov confronts Makar Semyonich, but he denies committing the murder. *The conflicts in the story are man vs. man between Aksenov and Makar and man vs. society for judging Aksenovs innocence. Point of View The point of view in the story is third person because it focuses on the character of Aksenov. Symbolism Gray hair- symbolizes the grief of Aksenov when no ane believes in him, and even his own wife doubt his innocence Knife- it symbolizes the start of his misery and lonely life. Jail in Siberia- where Aksenov thinks at first his misery and later became his refuge and place where he realized the real goodness of our creator.
