Common Core Standards


Reading Literature
1) Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. 2) Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

Essential Questions
1. 2. How do Leos emotions change as Stargirl begins to affect him? How can Leo choose between Stargirl and his acceptance? What would we choose?

Writing
3) Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. 4) Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Periods 1: Vocab + EOL


SWBAT practice their new vocabulary words; revise their 4m prompts; discuss themes of maturity and the fallibility of adults. Make changes to calendar o Vocab/Stargirl Quest 1 is now on Thursday o Poetry Out Loud competition is on Monday/Tuesday of PSSAs Review Vocab 1 (10 min) o Any students who did not put their sentences on a separate sheet of paper should do so as we review. o We will put the best definitions of the words on the projector so all students have access to it. o After we define the words, students should read through their sentences and star their best 2. o Collect sentences sheet. o Distribute Vocab 2 (due Monday) Review 4m prompts (10 min) o Prompts will be collected. Any prompt that does not have meaningful edits made to it will have points docked. Eleven by Sandra Cisneros (30 min) o Distribute story students should annotate their copy as we listen to the story togetherwrite reactions and thoughts, questions, agreements, etc. Show mine as an example. o Watch the video (~10 min) o Discuss (students should write this on their stories) Why wouldnt Rachel say the sweater was not hers? Is this story an example of the lack of maturity? Why was Rachels birthday ruined after this one incident? Can you think of a time where an adult failed you, like Mrs. Price to Rachel? What are Phyllis Lopezs motivations for taking back the sweater? Is she dumb, embarrassed, trying to cover? Why did the publisher say this was not a childrens story? Do you agree?

Period 2: EOL + Poetry Out Loud + PSSAs


SWBAT Journal (6 min) 7-5 only Finish Eleven discussion if necessary PSSA Reading Sample 2 (30 min) o Distribute Reading Sample 2 o Reading Strategy Review o Students should then read the text and answer the multiple choice questions using the strategies we have reviewed. Students should stop after completing the multiple choice. o Outline essays On the board, demonstrate a sample outline for the Reading Sample 2 essay Poetry Out Loud (rest of class) o Concentric Circles if time there will be two rings of students, one facing the walls of the class and one facing the second. The ring facing outside will be directly in front of the ring facing inside. Students will have 6 minutes with each partner two to recite and one for feedback (done twice) o Partner work Students will pick one partner to practice their poem with Wrap-up

Period 4: Stargirl
Chapters 16-19 SWBAT discuss major themes in chapters 16-19

SWBAT use the questioning strategy to actively read Stargirl. Journal (6 min) Reading Strategy Introduction Questioning (10 min) o Distribute questioning handout this will be collected on Friday o What is questioning? Students should keep a list of questions as they read and attempt to answer these questions. o Model: show my book and question sheet; students should attempt to answer the question with as much information possible Introduce final assessment (10 min) o Distribute handout o Describe at the end of the unit, students will turn in a journal for an alternate persona at MAHS that analyzes and reflects on the events of the school year. This journal will include artifacts as well as written entries. o How to choose a character o What it requires o Important due dates o Examples my finished journal, a yearbook, other types of diaries Work through Stargirl (25 min) o The basketball team o The Hot Seat interview o Archie o Emotions of different characters throughout the story Put on the board What are Leos emotions throughout the first half of the novel? What are Kevins emotions? Hillaris? Stargirls?

Journal (6 min) Discuss Leos motivations (10 min) o Quickwrite in your journal, write about a time you have ever done anything a bit creepy for/about someone you like. Any volunteers to share? Share for a friend? o Why do you think Stargirl isnt put off by Leos actions? Discuss Archie (5 min) o Why do the students value his opinion so much when he seems like a bit of a weirdo, but they reject Stargirl and ridicule her? o Answer Senor Saguaros question: Whose affection do you value more, hers, or the others? What stands in for her and the others? What would you answer? Is this an impossible choice? Discuss the desert scene (5 min) o What is going on here? Why is Leo so enamored with Stargirl? o What can Stargirl see that Leo only begins to see? Questions about the book before the Quest? (5 min) Review Vocabulary (20 min) o Some game Wrap-up o Homework study for quest, read through chapter 23 for Friday (Wed for 7-3)

Students will take their Quest. Once they have finished, they should quietly work on something.

SWBAT make their own filler pieces to celebrate their own accomplishments. Journal (6 min) Review and collect Questioning handout (5 min) o What questions did students ask and answer? Collect journal personas and descriptions (5 min) Discuss chapters 20-21 (10 min) o How is Stargirl able to see what no one else can? o What are Leos emotions surrounding Stargirl? o Is it nice to get credit? Why doesnt Stargirl want credit? Class filler (10 min) o Each student will come up with a piece of a class filler page o These fillers can be about anything a bit of trivia, a personal accomplishment, something going on the students life o Model how they should be written show examples o We will put these fillers on a piece of poster board; I will scan it and size it to make a copy for everyone in the class Discuss chapters 22-23 (10 min) o Watch Breaking Amish clip o Revisit Senor Saguaros question: Whose affection do you value more, hers, or the others? Which should Leo value? Is there a middle ground? Has your answer changed with these last few chapters? Wrap-up o Homework work on journal project (find a journal, think about artifacts, choose events from the book) o Prepare for Poetry Out Loud o Get lots of rest for the PSSAs! You can do it!
